appeared on 23 Oct 2002 in the Watertown Daily Times of Watertown, Jefferson,
NY, as follows: "Merton Brotherton. Gouverneur. Merton W. Brotherton,
92, lifelong resident of the Gouverneur, Theresa and Philadelphia areas, died
Monday afternoon at Kinney Nursing Home where he had been a resident since January
2001.
"Mr. Brotherton started working for area farmers as a young man and later
owned his own farms. He retired from farming in the early 1970s. After retiring,
he moved to Brownville and then to the Carthage area, returning to Gouverneur
in the late 1980s.
"Born Nov. 28, 1909, in Antwerp, a son of the late Horace and Blanche
Ward Brotherton, he attended local schools.
"He married Fern Gladle June 6, 1930. The marriage ended in divorce.
In the early 1940s, he married Ella Clifton. She died in 1997.
"Surviving are four daughters and two sons-in-law, Dolores and Edward
Bullard, Cranberry Lake, Candice and Joseph Renaud, address unknown, Patricia
Arnold, Natural Bridge, and Muriel Gates, Watertown; a son and his wife, Richard
and Barbara, Boca Raton, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Shirley Bothwell, Bellvue, Neb.;
a nephew he raised, Kenneth Phair, Easley, S.C.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
"A son, Donald; two brothers, Milton and Melvin; and two sisters, Myrtle
Belmore and Marion Phair, died before him.
"The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home,
Theresa, with the Rev. Thomas Brotherton, Pastor Emeritus of the Hermon First
Baptist Church, and Mr. Brotherton's cousin, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside
Cemetery, Antwerp.
"Calling hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home."
He was buried in Hillside cemetery, Antwerp, Jefferson, NY. His
reference number is 1207 in the Ira Johnson Genealogy. Merton W.
Brotherton and Fern Gladle were married on 9 Jun 1930. They were
divorced. Fern Gladle (daughter of Sidney
Ebenezer Gladle and Laura May Bilow) was born on 9 Aug 1912 in Macomb, St. Lawrence,
NY. She died on 24 Jul 2001 in Carthage, Jefferson, NY.
Her obituary appeared on 26 Jul 2001 in the Watertown Daily Times of Watertown,
Jefferson, NY, as follows: "Fern G. Shettleton Retired Activities
Director. Carthage. Fern G. Shettleton, 88, formerly of 42488 Avery Road, died
Tuesday at Hallmark Nursing Centre.
"Mrs. Shettleton was the first activities director at Greenbriar Nursing
Home, now known as Hallmark Nursing Centre. She retired because of ill health.
"Born Aug. 9, 1912, in Macomb, she was a daughter of Sidney and Laura
Barlow Gladle.
She married Merton W. Brotherton on June 9, 1930. The marriage ended in divorce.
She married Charles W. Thompson on Nov. 2, 1943. Mr. Thompson, a farmer, died
July 12, 1967, at age 67. She married Howard W. Shettleton on Aug. 9, 1969, in
Natural Bridge Methodist Church. Mr. Shettleton died April 4, 1970, at age 62.
"Surviving are three daughters, Patricia Arnold, Natural Bridge, Barbara
"Bobbie" Steria, Carthage, and Dolores Bullard, Cranberry Lake; two
sons, Charles Thompson Jr., Carthage, and Richard Brotherton, Fla.; three stepdaughters,
Carol Schneider and Shirley Kehoe, both of Carthage, and Linda Allen, Sackets
Harbor; two stepsons, Kenneth Shettleton and Carlton "Buddy" Shettleton,
both of Carthage; 12 grandchildren and several great- grandchildren.
"A stepson, Keith Shettleton; a brother, Sidney Gladle, and five half
brothers, Gaylord Gladle Sr., Harold 'Doc' Gladle, Homer Gladle, Gorden Crowder
and Floyd Crowder, died before her.
"A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 18 in Hillside Cemetery,
Natural Bridge, with the Rev. Walter E. Giles officiating.
"There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with Bossuot-Lundy
Funeral Home."

Rexford Clifton and Irene Dye) was born on 10 Jul 1921 in Antwerp, Jefferson,
NY. She died on 23 Mar 1997 in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY.
Her obituary appeared on 25 Mar 1997 in The Watertown Daily Times of Watertown,
Jefferson, NY, as follows: "Ella Brotherton Licensed Practical
Nurse. Gouverneur. The funeral for Ella Brotherton, 75, Rock Island Road, will
be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, with her cousin,
the Rev. Thomas Brotherton of Hermon Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will
be in Hillside Cemetery, Antwerp. "Mrs. Brotherton died Sunday at Edward
John Noble Hospital, where she had been a patient since Feb. 19.
"Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
"Mrs. Brotherton, a licensed practical nurse, retired in 1972 because
of ill health. Born July 10, 1921, in Antwerp, daughter of Rexford and Irene
Dye Clifton, she moved with her family to Adams as a young girl and attended
Adams High School. In 1963, she attended the School of Practical Nursing at Mercy
Hospital, Watertown. She married Merton Brotherton in the early 1940s. The couple
lived in the Antwerp and Gouverneur areas. Mrs. Brotherton was an active member
of the Citizens Band and Gouverneur Methodist Church.
"Surviving besides her husband are three daughters, Mrs. Duane (Muriel)
Gates, Gouverneur, Candace Alguire, Bomoseen, Vt., and Shirley Bothell, Rome;
two brothers, Carl Clifton, Watertown, and Paul Clifton, Tennessee; a sister,
Mrs. Irvine (Ruth) Widrick, Woodville; 13 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren
and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A son, Donald, and a sister, Clara Lane,
died in 1966. " She was buried in Hillside cemetery, Antwerp, Jefferson,
NY. Merton W. Brotherton and Ella Clifton had the following children:

23 Apr 1948 in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY. He died on 11 Oct 1966
in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence, NY. His obituary appeared on 11 Oct
1966 in The Watertown Daily Times of Watertown, Jefferson, NY, as follows:
"Youth Dies After Crash. Canton--Donald Roger Brotherton, 18, of Potato
street, Brier Hill, died early today of injuries sustained Monday night in a
one-car crash on Sand street road, Brier Hill.
"Young Brotherton was brought to the A. Barton Hepburn hospital, Ogdensburg
and immediately underwent surgery after the 8:15 p.m crash. He died at 4:30 this
morning.
"St. Lawrence county sheriff's office said Brotherton, who was alone,
was traveling southwest on Sand street road, near Brier Hill, at an excessive
rate of speed.
"His car left the highway, traveling along the right shoulder for nearly
100 feet before crossing a ditch and striking a four-foot oak tree. The car then
glanced off the tree and bounded back on to the highway, landing on its top,
headed west.
"Authorities said there was no evidence of skid marks. Brotherton apparently
died of head injuries, multiple fractures to the arms and legs, and other undetermined
injuries. Scene of the accident was one mile west of Brier Hill.
"Brotherton formerly was employed by Peretta Meat Company and for four
days was employed by Warren's garage, Brier Hill. Sgt. William J. Scott and Deputy
Ronald B. Pease are continuing their investigation today.
"Funeral for Mr. Brotherton will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. from Frederick
Brothers funeral home, Theresa, and at 2 p.m. from Theresa Methodist church,
with Rev. Ray L. Brothers, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside cemetery,
Antwerp.
"Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday evening and Thursday
afternoon and evening.
"He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Merton Brotherton, Philadelphia,
Route 1; a brother, Richard, at home; four sisters, Mrs. Edward Bullard, Cranberry
Lake, Mrs. Ellsworth Mays, McLean, Mrs. Robert Bailey, Champion, and Candice,
at home; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Clifton, Holly.
"Mr. Brotherton was born at Gouverneur, April 23, 1948. He attended Indian
River Central school. He had been employed by the Perretta Packing company, Brier
Hill, for about three months, working previously at the New York Air Brake company,
Watertown." He was buried in Hillside cemetery, Antwerp, Jefferson, NY.
It is not clear why the Shirley mentioned as a daughter in Ella Clifton Brotherton's
