244. Wilbur Richard "Dick" Rice was born on 27 Nov 1918 in Carthage, Jefferson, NY. He died on 1 Oct 1983 in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY. His obituary appeared in Oct 1983 in an unknown newspaper, as follows: "Wilbur R. Rice. Wilbur R. Rice, 64, Emeryville Road, Town of Fowler, a former employee of St. Joe Minerals, died 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Edward John Noble Hospital, where he had been a patient since Sept. 15.
"The funeral was at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Burr-Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur, with Rev. Anthony Sarnicola, pastor of Fowler Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Hailesboro Cemetery. Military services were conducted at the grave.
"Survivors include one sister, Mary Louise Hayden, Gouverneur; one brother, Robert A. Rice, Richville; nieces and nephews. Three brothers died before him: Raymond S., Leon E. and Charles F.
"Mr. Rice was born in Carthage on Nov. 27, 1918, the son of Allen and Mary Bassett Rice. He attended rural schools in the Town of Hermon, and worked for Rushmore Paper Co., Gouverneur.
"Mr. Rice married Sarah Giffin, a native of Scotland, on Jan. 12, 1945 in Charlton, England.
"Mr. Rice worked for the International Talc Company for two years and then for 29 years at St. Joe Minerals." He was buried in Hailesboro cemetery, Hailesboro, St. Lawrence, NY. He served in the military.

Wilbur Richard "Dick" Rice and Sarah Jane "Sally" Giffin were married on 12 Jan 1945 in Taunton, England. Sarah Jane "Sally" Giffin (daughter of Samuel Giffin and Elizabeth Brown) was born on 4 Dec 1918 in Glasgow, Lanark, SCOT. Her obituary appeared in Feb 1974 in an unknown newspaper, as follows: "Scotland Native Dies. Gouverneur -- Mrs. Sarah Jane Rice, 55, Rock Island Road, wife of Wilbur R. Rice, native of Scotland and former housekeeper at Edward John Noble Hospital, died Thursday afternoon in the hospital, where she had been a patient for five months.
"The funeral will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Burr-Green Funeral Home, Rev. Howe B. Perry, pastor, First American Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hailesboro Cemetery.
"Calling hours at the funeral home are today and Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
"Surviving are her husband; two brothers, John Giffin, and James Giffin, both of Glasgow, Scotland.
"Born in Glasgow Dec. 4, 1918, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Brown Giffin, she was married to Wilbur R. Rice in Taunton, England, Jan. 12, 1945. The couple lived at Richville for a short time and had lived in the Gouverneur section since 1947.
"Mrs. Rice worked as a housekeeper for the Gouverneur hospital for 14 years.
"She was a member of the Hailesboro Home Bureau and a former member of the Gouverneur Una Rebekah Lodge." She died on 7 Jul 1974 in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY. She was buried in Hailesboro cemetery, Hailesboro, St. Lawrence, NY.
