210. David Earl Manning was born on 15 Feb 1922 in Hermon, St. Lawrence, NY. He died in Dec 1943/44 in Germany. "Former Hermon Athlete Missing. Hermon, Jan. 17.--Lieut. David Manning, 22, a pilot in U. S. army air corps, stationed in the European area, is listed as missing in action over Germany since Dec. 22.
"This information was contained in a letter received by his father, Earl Manning, from Lieutenant Manning's wife of Boise, Ida., who had been notified by the war department.
"Lieutenant Manning is the son of Earl J. Manning, Ogdensburg, and the late Mary Smith Manning. He has a brother, Brooks in the U.S. army, and another brother, Peter, of Bayonne, N.J., and his grandfather, W. C. Smith, Hermon, with whom he made his home before entering the service.
"Lieutenant Manning attended Hermon High school and St. Mary's Academy of Ogdensburg. He was prominent in athletics, particularly basketball. One of the outstanding players in the Mountain Valley league with Hermon, he later transferred to St. Mary's Academy and was a star there.
"Lieutenant Manning had been in the army about two years and received training at various air fields, graduating from Marfa air base in Texas in May, 1943. He served in the military During WW II.

David Earl Manning and Norma Gresham were married in Jul 1943. From Peter Manning: "David went west with the CCC and was stationed in Idaho. Norma's father was a forerman in the CCC cmap and used to take some of the boys home with him on week ends and that's how they met. . . . They were married in July 1943. He went overseas in September and was shot down on the first raid."
