The funeral for Clarence Neil, 83, Cleveland, N.Y., formerly of Antwerp and Heuvelton, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fox Funeral Home, with the Rev. Betty Masters officiating. Spring burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, town of Oswegatchie.
“Mr. Neil died Wednesday evening at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital, Syracuse.
“Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
“Surviving are his wife, Carol; a son, Larry, Watertown; two daughters, Mrs. Peter (Peggy) West, Rodman, and Mrs. Peter (Kimberly) Davies, Utica; four grandchildren; four sisters, Dr. Verna Alder, New Brunswick, N.J., Anna Birchead, South Colton, Wilda Hutchinson, Potsdam, and Mary Lipchus, Hamdon, Conn.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
“A daughter, Jeanette, died in infancy. A brother, Wilbur, also died before him.
“Born March 14, 1911, in Antwerp, a son of Robert and Minnie Shields Neil, he attended Copenhagen schools and graduated from Cornell University, Ithaca, in 1936.
“He married Mary Esther Engelson in 1936. The couple lived in Palmyra, where Mr. Neil owned and operated the Palmyra Creamery, which he sold in 1962. They then moved to Heuvelton, where he managed the Aiello's Cheese Plant until 1968. Then the couple moved to Canastota, where Mr. Neil was manager and state inspector for the Queensboro Farm Products Inc., retiring in 1979.
“His first wife died in 1970. On March 13, 1971, he married Carol Newcombe in Herkimer. The couple moved to Cleveland in 1980.
“Mr. Neil had 11 state licenses for agricultural and state farm inspections. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and Palmyra Masonic Lodge 248.” He was buried in Pine Hill cemetery, Morristown, St. Lawrence, NY.

Carol Newcombe (daughter of Floyd Newcombe and Miranda Poor) was born on 9 May 1940 in DePeyster, St. Lawrence, NY. She died on 19 Jul 2002 in Albany, Albany, NY. Carol Neil, 62, of 2731 Caroline Ave., Schenectady, a DePeyster native, died Friday in St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, where she had been under hospice care.
“Born May 9, 1940, in DePeyster, daughter of Floyd and Miranda Poor Newcombe, she graduated from Palmyra High School in 1958.
“She married Clarence Neil on March 13, 1970, in Herkimer. The couple lived at Little Falls and Cleveland, N.Y. Mr. Neil died March 16, 1994.
“She enjoyed country music.
“Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Kimberly and Peter Davies, Rotterdam; a stepdaughter and her husband, Peg and Peter West, Watertown; a stepson and his wife, Larry and Nicole Neil, Watertown; three sisters, Mrs. Robert (Eleanor) Holtz, Victor, and Mrs. John (Hazel) Kolmer and Mrs. Charles (Virginia) Wheat, both of Florida; four brothers, Donald Newcombe, Fairport, Roland Newcombe, DePeyster, Elmer Newcombe, Rochester, and Gary Newcombe, Fulton; a granddaughter, four stepgrandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
“The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Fox-McLellan Funeral Home, Ogdensburg. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Eel Weir.
“Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
“Donations may be made to Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, N.Y. 12308.”
