- HISTORICAL NOTES: John Thurman, Jr. (1737-1809) was the son of John and Elizabeth (Wessels) Thurman, Sr. of New York City. Thurman was a merchant and land agent removing to Warren County after the Revolution, residing on Elm Hill. Thurman was instrumental to the development of the Johnsburgh and Thurman, New York region erecting the first saw and grist mills, store, distillery, cotton factory and calico printing factory. His land dealings included Dartmouth Patent, the Gore, Hyde Township and Totten and Crossfield's Purchase, Warren County, the Road Patent, Essex County and lands in Montgomery County, Clinton County, the Catskills, and along the Susquehanna River. John Thurman may not have married and had children as his nephews, Ralph Thurman Jr., Richardson Thurman, and Nicholas Roosevelt Jr. played an active role in his businesses. John Thurman Jr. died in 1809 after being gored by a bull and was buried in Johnsburgh Corners, Warren County, New York.
- ABSTRACT: This is a small collection of papers on the business dealings of John Thurman Jr. of New York City and Warren County, New York as a merchant and land agent. The most significant item is a letterbook for 1777 to 1821 containing correspondence on trade, land transactions, Thruman's views on the approaching revolution and his relationship to his nephews. The recipients include Rutger Bleecker, Goldsbrow Banyar, Elias Boudinot, Zephaniah Platt, the Fondas, Cadwallader Colden, English companies, and others.
- ABSTRACT: The legal series contains documents on Seth Aldin of Shaftsbury, Vt., Kingsbury and Caldwell, New York as well as miscellaneous Thurman family items on estate and land matters.
- ABSTRACT: The land papers consist of deeds, primarily in the Warren County, New York area. Included are 18 maps of Hyde Township (Patent), Dartmouth Patent, the Gore, and Totten and Crossfield's Purchase, Warren County, the Road Patent, Essex County, and Bolton and Queensbury, New York. Many list the names of occupants and owners.
