Shuman and Schermerhorn, Seneca Co., NY

Submitted by Joni Pontius

John Devine Shuman and Angeline Schermerhorn of Seneca Falls were married in Geneva by D.D. Buck, Pas. M.E. Church, Geneva, on the fourth of August, 1859. (Rev. Buck was a resident of Penn Yan. There is no other record of this marriage. I got it in John's pension papers. That's the source for much of the data on John, Angeline and Cora.)
Angeline was the widow of George James Schermerhorn, who died in September of 1857 and is buried in Fox/Black Brook Cemetery. John D. Shuman's brothers, Andrew Jackson and Levi Blaisdell Shuman, and he all lived in Seneca Falls. John enlisted in 1864 in Auburn and died January 29, 1865, aged 35, at Foster General Hospital of typhoid fever, at New Bern, North Carolina. He was a private, Company D., 3rd Regiment., N.Y. Artillery Volunteers. Andrew Jackson and Levi and their families are buried in Restvale cemetery. John D. is buried in Lakeview cemetery, Cayuga, with his mother's family. She was Isabella Montgomery, daughter of Jane and Hugh Montgomery, the latter being a Revolutionary War veteran. Isabella married Levi B. Shuman Sr., who, like Angeline, is not to be found. (Lakeview Cemetery, Cayuga Co. historian).
Angeline appears to be buried with neither husband. The Shumans have a nice monument in Restvale, and John D. has one that's listing badly in Lakeview; no Angeline. She died September 15, 1871 (found in the "Seneca Courier" newspaper) after she was thrown onto her head out of a carriage on its way to Waterloo when a horse reared. She died at her home at 59 Mynderse St. the next day. The funeral was through the Congregational Church of Seneca Falls. She was born ca 1836. She left two orphaned daughters, Lillias Jane Schermerhorn, born in 1856/7, and Cora Isabelle Shuman. Cora I. Shuman was born at Seneca Falls on February 28, 1860, delivered by George W. Davis (affidavit in John Shuman's pension file). Dr. Davis states in pension records that he was not a relative, but was appointed Cora's guardian. As far as I can determine, there are no estate papers or wills of any of the three parents, so it's a bear nailing down names and dates. I'd like to see the appropriate dates and names put on the website, so some other poor person doesn't have to go through this looking for them; the deaths and marriage and birth dates, if possible.
Restvale Cemetery, Seneca Falls- Levi Blaisdell Shuman Born in Aurelius, in Civil War, a painter, iron moulder, worked for Goulds. (City Directories, census records, Betty Auten,). He died June, 1909, was born in 1842. His wife-Julia E. Kissinger; son Rev. Adelbert Shuman of Spencer Methodist Episcopal Church at Hornell; and Charles, of Seneca Falls. Julia E. was born 1847, died June 6, 1923, aged 76, buried in Restvale, a life resident of Seneca Falls. Her mother Hannah Kissinger, born ca 1819, died February 17, 1893, is also buried with them. Levi enlisted August 20, 1862 into Company A, 148th Infantry, and returned from the war. I cannot so far find any monument or stone for them in Restvale. I'll keep looking, but I know the dates from census records and city directories, as well as County Historian Betty Auten's files and Julia's will, among other sources.
Rev. Adelbert L. Shumann of East Aurora died August 24, 1924, born in Seneca Falls 1869/1870; buried in East Aurora. His daughters were Miss Marion G. Shuman of Newark, N.Y., Miss Dorothy Shuman, of Niagara Falls; and a son, Donald R. Shuman, of East Aurora. (Seneca Falls newspaper obit). His brother Charles H., born in 1876, of 57 Mynderse St., Seneca Falls survived him as well. He was a photographer.(S.F. Business Directory).
Andrew Jackson Shuman, born 1835 in Cayuga Co., enlisted September 1, 1864 in the 3rd Light Artillery, and returned from the war. He died in Seneca Falls March 2, 1908, and is buried with his wife Harriet P. Gilbert, and their children in Restvale. He was also an iron moulder and lived at 6 Daniels Street in Seneca Falls. Harriet was born in 1838 in Cayuga County and died February 25, 1923. (Harriet's maiden name is from the "Boston Transcript", 18-May-1914, #4086)(Other sources- city directories, military lists, Betty Auten, wills/probates, censuses).
Their daughter Frances A. was a dressmaker, b. in 1855. She did not marry. She died December 3, 1926, aged 63. Their son Fred G. was born in1861, died 1935, buried in Restvale. He was an insurance agent and a grocer. He married Emma F. Flickinger, b. ca 1861., dau. of Barbara A. Flickinger, on June 27, 1902 (newspaper). He had a first wife, Lenora McCarthy, with him in Restvale, born 1860, died 1900. She was the daughter of Daniel McCarthy, and her clothes caught fire on Dec. 20, 1899; she died two weeks later. She was born in Wayne County, lived in Seneca Falls for 25 years.
Andrew and Harriet had another daughter, Carrie, born ca 1856. She married Edward A. Howe and moved to Kansas City. They are buried in Restvale, like all of the rest of the family except for Adelbert. A second son, Frankie R. Shuman, died aged 3 months, September 29, 1874, born June 27, 1874. (cemetery record). A third daughter, Luella H., was born November 25, 1875, and died April 2, 1892.
Restvale Records that are not currently on line: The Howe -Shuman monument is in the southeastern section of the cemetery. Reading from north to south facing west, i.e., looking at the "back", for Andrew Jackson's family is buried on both sides: "Lenora McCarthy his wife, 1860-1900 "(Fred's first wife); Fred G. Shuman, 1861-1935; Emma Flickinger his wife, 1859-1937 (Fred's second wife); Edward H. Howe, 1854-1929; Carrie S. Howe, 1858-1931 (S=Shuman). Facing east, reading the "front" side, from south to north: Frances A. Shuman, 1855-1926; A. Jackson Shuman, 1835-1908; Harriet Shuman, 1838-1923; Luella M. Shuman, daughter of Jackson & Harriet, Nov. 25, 1875-April 2, 1892 (very hard to read; could be 1880? I'll check on that); Frankie R., son of J. & H., June 27, 1874-Sep. 29, 1874.
