He built a tavern
just east of the Swartwood house in Rudd (then known as Danville). It was a
false front building facing west with a bar on the north and slooping rooms
upstairs and a low part on the sourth for living rooms.
They moved to Rudd about 1877 and he ran a saloon in the town of
Rudd. He also kept a stable of fine horses which he rented out occasionally.
He caught the gold fever and went west to CA. Family stories say that Sarah
baked him a truck full of cookies which he took with him. He profited only by
experience however and returned to IA. He had saved a few cookies as souviners
but they were stolen on the way home. He brought back only a few nuggets

Following
the three years after the death of her husband in 1949, she worked at many
menial tasks. One day when so engaged, she remembered that her father had said
"I will give my girls an education so they will not need to scrub floors
for a living." Thinking about that education she returned to teaching and
continued her education, eventually completing her BA at Upper Iowa University
in 1963. Her
special area was teaching mentally handicapped children.
