Montgomery Van Tassel obituary

September 1907

Montgomery Van Tassel died at the home of hiss son, Lorenzo, near Pine Grove, on Saturday, Sept 21st, aged 73 years. During the last seven weeks he has suffered much from gangrene in his lower limb and back. When a young man he married Betsy Burchard, now deceased. To them were given four children. Two died in infancy. One daughter, Olive, saw 21 summers, and after a lingering illness coughed herself away. One son, Lorenzo, survives the aged father. Mr. Van Tassel was known as a genial companion, kind neighbor and helpful citizen. As a young man he united with the M. E. Church of Livingstonville, but, alas, he drifted into the world and tasted its bitters and its sweets. The death of his little grand child seemed to call him to God, and during the last two years he was much given to prayer. His friends paid their last respects to him Monday, when the Rev. F. L. Lare talked from Eccl. 12 : 7. Burial was made by the side of his wife at Preston Hollow.
