H. Duane Strong Jr., 71, of Union Street, Cobleskill, died Tuesday at his home.

Born in Oneonta, Mr. Strong lived in Cobleskill for the past 47 years. He was a graduate of the State University of Oneonta College, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees.

Mr. Strong was a social studies teacher at Cobleskill Central School until retiring in 1985. He later volunteered his time to the Otschodela Boy Scouts Council, the Salvation Army and the Community Hospital of Schoharie County.

He was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, American Legion Pot 1688 in Laurens, Cobleskill Restoration and Development, Cobleskill Historical Society, Schoharie County Historical Society, Better Breathers, SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association, American Association of Retired Persons, Schoharie Arts Council and Strong Family Association of America.

Mr. Strong was honored in 1989 with the Outstanding Community Service Award by the Schoharie County Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. In 1990, Mr. Strong received the Outstanding Community Service Award by SUNY Cobleskill. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Cobleskill Historical Society in 1994.

Mr. Strong was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a member of the Laurens Presbyterian Church.

His wife, Marjorie Riggs Strong, died in 1984.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Leland Strong of Hollywood, Fla., and James Duane Strong of Mechanicville; a brother, Robert Strong of Wolcott; a grandson and a great-grandson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St. Burial will be in the Laurens Rural Cemetery in Laurens.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or the Cobleskill Rescue Squad.
