CHARLES O. LAYMON

Editor of this Paper for Twenty-seven Years Passes Away Sunday

Has been an active man in state, county, and local affairs for many years. Remains taken to former home in New York state.

Editor, Chas. O. Laymon, who underwent an operation at General Hospital in Buffalo for gallstones, died at the hospital Sunday morning, May 5. The operation was successful and Mr. Laymon was considered out of danger and out was bright and cheerful when his daughter, Mrs. Beulah Greene, returned home from his bedside Saturday noon, and the message that he had passed away was a severe shock to his family and the community. Charles O. Laymon was the son of Peter Elias and Anna Maria Laymon and was born in Conesville, Schoharie County, New York, May 3, 1858. He obtained a good education in the public schools, which he supplemented by a full course at academics. He immediately after graduating he began teaching in the schools of Delaware and Schoharie counties. He became principal of the Union School at Roxbury, New York, and finished his pedagogical career at that institute in 1881. In 1882 he entered the field of journalism and has ever since been connected with newspaper life in New York and Pennsylvania. In 1882 he purchased the Gilboa Monitor, a weekly newspaper, which he edited very successfully for six years. He sold the Monitor in 1888 and purchased the Roxbury Times, which he edited and published for two years. He sold the Times in 1890, and in 1891 purchased the Port Allegany Reporter. Mr. Laymon is well known in newspaperdom as a strong editorial writer in State, County, and City affairs, to the many patrons of his paper as a writer of current and local happenings, which he presented to them in a most interesting manner. He is known to his neighbors as a good citizen utilizing his power in their best interest. He is a member of Liberty Lodge Number 505, Free and Accepted Mason; Arnold Chapter Number 254, Royal Arch Masons (both of Port Allegany); Olean Commandery, No. 24, Knights of Templar; Zem Zem Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine; Coudersport Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite. Mr. Laymon was twice married, his first wife being Mattie Peck, whom he married October 17, 1882, and who died March 7, 1885(?), leaving one daughter Nina. In 1886 he married Ada E. Lamphere, daughter of John Lamphere of Conesville, New York. He is survived by his wife and four children: Mrs. Nina Wood of Streator, Illinois, Mrs. Beulah Greene of Newpaltz, New York, Randall now with the Aviation Corp. in San Antonio, Texas, and Edna at home; also one brother William of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Funeral services were held at the home Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock Rev. W.A. Stackhouse officiating. The remains, accompanied by the family, was taken on the 5:18 Flyer to Gilboa, New York for internment in the family plot.
