Obituary of Bernice Bixby Wicks
Dies in Sanatarium at Schenectady
January 1927
The hearts of many Schoharie county
friends were saddened by the news of the death of Mrs. Bernice Wicks at the
Glenridge Sanatarium, Schenectady, after hovering for a week on the border of
another world the hilvery cord was loosened and the life returned to Him who
gave it.
Of late years her health has been far from strong and
for the past year it was known by friends that there was lingering, in her
system a malady that gave reason for alarm and about four months ago she
consented to enter the Glenridge Sanatarium, Little by little her strength
weakened but her good cheer never lessened and her courage never railed. For
months she has been planning and looking forward to the joyous Christmas season
regarding the gifts she was expecting to give and to receive, and also to the
coming springtime when she was planning to leave the Sanatarium and locate on a
small place outside the city to fully regain her health. The past weeks have
been marked with intense suffering but she has borne it all so patiently. The
best of medical skill and nursing were employed but she continued to fail, the
end coming Thursday evening at nine o'clock.
Mrs. Wicks was born in the town of Middleburgh, 30
years ago, the only child of Charles and Libbie Borst Bixby, for a time she
attended the district school where she was loved by her schoolmates, especially
the smaller ones as she was always ministering to their small wants and needs.
Later she attended Middleburgh High School.
About ten years ago she was united in marriage to
Burton G. Wicks. They resided on her father's farm until after his death and
later moved to Schoharie. As a girl she was a regular attendant of the M. E.
church and she united with the Reformed church at Schoharie. She has been an
interested church worker while health permitted and was a lover of music.
About three years ago they moved to Schenectady.
She was a good neighbor, ever ready to lend a helping
hand. She was devoted to her home and loved ones and spared no efforts in
providing for their happiness and enjoyment.
She is survived by her husband and eight year old
daughter, Katherine and her mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. William West of
Cobleskill.
Funeral services were held at the Community Church,
Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock at Schoharie, Rev. Mae Connell officiating.
The white casket was covered with beautiful flowers,
and cousins acted as bearers. Interment in Lutheran Cemetery at Schoharie. The
following poem, "Crossing the Bar" by Tennyson was one of her
favorites and seems to express the sentiments of the deceased.
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell
When I embark.
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
