Please read below for information and websites about various local organizations that may be of help to you.

For post-Revolutionary records, the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences is the best resource around. Some of the many resources here are:

You can do your research by mail (there is a fee, less if you're a member) or in person (there is a fee if you're not a member). Please call in advance to check hours. [I have been told that you must make an appointment.] You can get more information at our SIIAS page.

Holly's notes (thanks, Holly!): You must have an appointment to visit the Archives. You can't just waltz in and expect a welcome. Also, be advised that you will not be permitted to carry a notebook or pad or even your own pencils into the Archives. Lockers are provided. You will be given some paper and a pencil. I was allowed one typewritten list of dead ancestors whose obits I was after, as well as my magnifying glass.

Lynn's notes:They are only open to visitors on Tuesday - Thursday 10a.m. - 4 p.m. You must make an appointment as the equipment; such as, microfiche, microfilm machines and personnel are limited

For colonial periods, check out The Staten Island Historical Society at Historic Richmondtown. They have, among other things:

They are open for research on Mondays and Tuesdays by appointment only. They do some research by mail, but you will do a lot better by going there yourself. You can get more information at our SIHS page.

The Section of Genealogy (a part of the SIIAS) meets 7:30 - 9:00 the second Thursday of every month at the courthouse in Historic Richmondtown. All are welcome. Questions relating to your genealogical search may be discussed with members of the group between 7:00pm and 7:30pm or after the meeting. Upcoming meetings:

Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries of Staten Island's purpose is to initiate the preservation and cleanup of neglected or abandoned cemeteries, graveyards, burying grounds and churchyards; and to assist in the beautification, rehabilitation, and/or attempt to restore, and maintain, the markers, stones and history of such final resting places. All about FACSI.

New York Genealogical and Biographical Society has many excellent articles for everyone. They also have online databases for members.

The Preservation League of Staten Island. Since its organization in 1977, The Preservation League of Staten Island has devoted its time, energy and resources to identifying, fostering an appreciation for, and supporting the preservation of Staten Island's historic built environment through a wide variety of activities -- and with continuing success.

The St. George Branch of the New York Public Library, very close to the ferry, has the Staten Island Advance on microfilm from 1921, and limited other holdings. Here are the Hours and Directions (and other SI locations).

The New York Public Library, main branch at 42nd Street, has a terrific Genealogy section.

The Staten Island Daughters of the American Revolution recently got a home page. They even have an online Staten Island Chapter Revolutionary War Ancestor List.

The Family History Library has the largest collection of genealogical information in the world. Much of their holdings is in microfilm form, which you can rent at your nearest Family History Center for a month for about $3.75. See the Family History Library Catalog.

This is not genealogy per se, but the Order of the Eastern Star 1931 Membership List contains addresses of its members. A great resource! A big thank you to Robert Chagnon!

Wyandotte Hook and Ladder

Fern Wilcox has been researching the Wyandotte Hook and Ladder Company of which her great grandfather Charlie Cowan and great uncle William Francis Janes were founders. She has been searching photos of the group.

She has transcribed the legal document establishing it.

She has provided an invitation to their 1895 annual reception.

She has also provided Charles Cowan's Certificate of Membership in the Order of American Firemen dated 1887.

She adds, "When my g-uncle William Francis Janes was Captain in the late 1890's he was killed in the line of duty and I have the obit and an article from the N. Y. Times which described the memorial service at which enough money was raised so his wife could purchase a home."

Many thanks to Fern! If you have more info on the company, particularly photos, please contact her at her yahoo.com address iamfernie22 .
