Rider
Family Photographs
Town
of Parish
Oswego
Co., NY
We have had contact with a man from FL.
His ancestors are a big part of Parish's history.
He has some wonderful Rider family photos.
He can't identify all of the folks. I was hoping that we could post
it on the site and maybe someone has the same photo and/or someone can
identify some more. Mary Lou Guindon, by way of Don Blankman

You Know These People?
“House Photo”Parish, NY
February 13, 2002
Hi Kim:
I hope you received the two photos I just
sent you okay? The one in front of my great great uncle William Rider’s
house in Parish lets designate as the “house Photo” and the other
we will call the “garden Photo” for the sake of brevity. The garden
photo has the largest number of unknown people, but they were no doubt
Parish people. The garden photo was taken about the same time as the house
photo. Number 2 in the house photo is my father Glenn Warren Blankman,
born 6 February 1887. He looks as though he was about 2 years old, so my
guess is that the house photo was taken in the summer of 1889. The garden
photo was taken about the same time. Some of the ladies are even wearing
the same dresses. Also, number 1 in the garden photo is my great grandmother
Eunice
Harter, wife of George Dennis Rider. She died 8 March 1893,
so the photo definitely antedates her demise. The house photo shows the
following:
“Garden Photo”
Parish, NY
1. Dora Belle Rider Blankman, my grandmother.
2. Glenn Warren Blankman, my father.
3. Unknown, but the same as No. 7 in the
garden photo.
4. Baby Nellis.
5. Kit Nellis. She is in the garden photo
as
No. 12.
6. William Rider.
7. Genevia Rider.
8. Jessie Rider?
9. Unknown.
10. Unknown, but possibly the same as
No. 26 in garden photo?
11. Unknown, but possibly the same as
No. 27 in garden photo?
12. Unknown.
13. Mrs. Hoisington. Same as No. 18 in
garden photo.
14. Unknown.
15. Unknown.
16. Unknown, but the same as No. 25 in
garden photo.
17. Unknown, but the same as No. 5 in
garden photo.
18. Unknown, but the same as No. 23 in
garden photo.
In the garden photo, as stated above, No.
1 is Eunice Harter, wife of George Dennis Rider. I have no way of knowing,
but I wonder if 3 and 4 might not have been sisters of Eunice? Other than
as stated above, the others in the garden photo are unknown to me. I know
that Eunice and George Rider belonged to a Temperance organization, and
I wonder if the garden photo might not have been a gathering of that membership?
I have the membership certificate somewhere in my archive. I hope someone
else has these photos and can identify the unknown persons.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Rider house in
Parish
A Jpg photo taken at what may
have been the original Rider house in Parish.
George is No. 7, Eunice is No. 12 and
Arthur their son is No. 13. I think No. 14 is Ora Rider, the minister,
No. 8 is Amos Harter, and No. 9 is Bess Harter. Since Arthur is say 4 years
old, the photo must have been taken about 1861, or so. Arthur was born
in 1857. The others in the photo I don't know, but my Aunt Eunice thought
No. 4 might have been Allen Rider. If so then either 3 or 5 may have been
his wife, but neither of them look like Allen's wife in other photos.
The Harters (Herrther, Herder) were from
Manlius Center and go back to Palatine German immigrants who came to New
York in 1709. They eventually settled in Herkimer (German Town) and had
one of the 100 acre Burnetsfield Patents on the Mohawk River. Henry Harter,
the father of Eunice settled in Manlius and was a blacksmith. His wife
was Hannah Reals (descended from another Palatine Family named Ruehl).
Henry had three sons who were in the Civil War. I have a lot of data and
original documents on the Harters, and Betty and I attended the First Harter
Family Reunion in Herkimer in 1981.
