Chateaugay
Cemetery, Rte. 2,
Town
of Orwell
Oswego
Co., NY
This small neighborhood cemetery is located
on the south side of Hwy. 2, between Orwell and
Chateaugay. It is very well maintained
and surrounded by a fence. There are quite a few
fieldstones indicating other burials here,
and we also found three tombstones that were broken and completely illegible.
The tombstones in this cemetery were copied by Kathleen L. Last and
Virginia Ackerman on September 9, 2002.
Many thanks to Kathleen L. Last
and Virginia Ackerman for their time and hard work taking a reading
of these cemeteries and sharing with us. Its much appreciated.

Subject: Carlisle's Buried at Chateaugay
Cemetery
Regarding Chateaugay Cemetery in Orwell:
Listed in the Carlisle Family History
notes prepared by my late mother, Marian Carlisle Gorman is the
following;
Thomas Carlisle and Elizabeth Smith
both of the town of Schroepel, NY were married February 16, 1867. They
lived at Beeckerville, near Orwell, NY, on lots 26 and 36 at the time of
Elizabeth's death. Her daughter, Martha, died the same year and
her son, Clifford was very ill with scarlet fever that summer. Elizabeth,
Martha, Thomas and Elizabeth's mother, Mary M. Cooley, are all buried
in the cemetery at Chateaugay, near Orwell. There are no markers, only
field stones. Regarding the name "Carlisle", it was spelled Carlisle, Carlile
and Carlyle by different members of the family, probably due to the fact
that the family was seperated after the death of the mother and attended
different schools.
Clifford lived and was my grandfather,
Marian's father and occasionally they would visit the cemetery. Marian's
cousin Mary Frances Costello is still alive in Oswego and can also
verify this information.
