 Joseph Carter was a very early settler near Bethel in the Town of Hannibal, NY, probably arriving somewhere around the early 1800's.  Joseph Carter was also a veteran of the War of 1812.
 Joseph donated land on which to build a schoolhouse.  As a result, the school district became known as the Carter District.  The schoolhouse closed its doors in 1944.

 Leon served in the US Army either during or shortly after the end of World War I.  He and his first wife Louise were married while he was stationed in Virginia.  He later returned to Fulton, NY, with Louise and their daughter Ruby.  Sometime in the 1930's, he and Louise were divorced.
