John M. Wiltse - Civil War
|
|
These are two images of my 2nd great-grandfather, John M. Wiltse.
Born 1834 at Rose Hill, Marcellus, NY, died 1917 in Syracuse, NY.
He volunteered 23 Aug. 1862 at Palermo, Oswego County for 3 yrs. as a private,
Company F, 147th NY. Was transferred to 3rd Brigade Ammo Train, where
he was a wagon master in charge of handling the mules attached to the ammo
wagons. He was present during the Battle of Gettysburg, participating
in the only known mule train charge during the Civil War. Discharged
with reg't August 1865, Washington, DC.
On the left is probably his enlistment photograph, taken circa 1862.
On the right, after he became a teamster: note the tent in the backdrop
and the young spruce trees--obviously taken in the field, probably in VA.
