I Certify,
That Srgt. Richard McGrath of Captain Joseph Dempsey Company K of the 147th
Regiment of Vols., Third Brigade, Third Division, Fifth Corps, born in
State of Ireland aged 40 years; was enlisted by Joseph Dempsey on the fifth
day of September 1862 to serve for 3 years; died on the day of Aug 19th,
1864.
Srgt.
Richard McGrath was killed in action at the Weldon R.R. Aug 19th.
Deceased
Richard McGrath last paid by Paymaster Maj Thayre to include the 29th day
of February 1864, and has pay due from that time to date of death Aug 19th,
1864 being 5 months 19 days at $ 84/3. The following amount of U.S.
Bounty has been paid to him : ___ Dolls.There is due him 100 Dollars retained
U. S. Bounty.

On this 20th day of October A.D. 1864, personally appeared before me Edward
N. Rathbone, Clerk of the Courts of record of the county & state aforesaid,
Mary McGrath, a resident of Oswego City in the County of Oswego and State
of New York, aged 49 years, who, being first duly sworn according to law,
doth on her oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the
benefit of the provisions made by the act of Congress, approved July 14,
1862: That she is the widow of Richard McGrath who was a Sergeant
in company K commanded by Captain Dempsey in the 147th regiment of N.Y.S.V.
in the war of 1861, who was killed at the battle of the Weldon Rail Road
in Virginia on or about Aug. 19, 1864. She further says her husband
Richard McGrath left surviving him five children and only five whose names
ages and residence are as follows: Mary Eleanor McGrath Born July
14, 1844, Thomas McGrath Born December 23, 1846, Elizabeth H. McGrath born
February 1, 1849, Jane McGrath born January 1, 1852, Richard McGrath born
April 20th 1856. For proof of marriage she refers to papers filed
in 2nd Auditors Office along with declaration for back Pay and Bounty.
She further declares that she was married to the said Richard McGrath on
the 30th day of August in the year 1843; that her husband, the aforesaid
Richard McGrath died on the day above mentioned, and that she has remained
a widow ever since that period, as will more fully appear by reference
to the proof hereto annexed. She also declares that she has not in
any manner been engaged in, or aided or abetted, the rebellion in the United
States. She also hereby constitutes and appoints M. J. Gillespie
of Oswego N.Y. her attorney to prosecute this claim & procure a Pension
Certificate.

Also personally appeared Charles North and Cheney Ames residents of Oswego,
N.Y. persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and
who, being by me duly sworn, say that they were present and saw Mary McGrath
sign her name (or make her mark) to the foregoing declaration; and they
further swear that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance
of the applicant and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical
person she represents herself to be, and that they have no interest in
the prosecution of this claim. Her declaration was read to her before
making her mark thereto.

Extract of the records of
Baptisms, Marriages & Burials performed in the Parish of Montreal under
the title of the Name of Mary in the Isle, county a district of Montreal
Province of Lower Canada for the year 1843.
"On the thirty first day
of August 1843 after one publication and without any impediment or opposition
dispensation of two publications having been obtained from Mr Joseph Vincent
Quiblu Vicar General of the Bishop of Montreal I the undersigned a priest
authorized for that purposed having received by word the mutual consent
of Richard McGrath a day labour residing in this Parish son of full age
of the late Thomas McGrath and of Mary Egon of the county of Tipperay in
Ireland on the one part and of Mary Hyde residing in this Parish daughter
of age of the late James Hyde a farmer and of Ellenor Bunting of the county
of Antrim in Ireland on the other part, Have married them according to
the laws & rites of the Holy church in the presence of Peter Handrely
John McGrath and John Baptist same undersigned with the married couple
