Louis Cass Rowe
was named Oswego Postmaster in 1894, was a member of the Oswego Charter
Revision Commission in 1894 -1895, an Oswego County Court Judge from
1909 - 1915 and was at one time President of both the Oswego Chamber of
Commerce and the Fortnightly Club. He practiced law and real estate
in Oswego for many years.
The Rowes came to Oswego County from Litchfield,
CT. in 1818 and settled first in New Haven, where the Rowe family was among
the founders of the Congregational Church there.
Louis' father, Nathan
Rowe, was under-sheriff of Oswego when Nathan's father, Norman
Rowe, was Sheriff in 1848. Nathan briefly was a co-editor and publisher
of the Pal-Times, and for several years after 1859, was superintendent
of a starch factory on Battle Island, where the family lived when Louis
was born.
Louis' wife, Emma Benz
Rowe, was the daughter of George S.
Benz, who ran a furniture store and upholstery business on East
First Street (roughly where the Simeon deWitt tower stands today) from
the 1860s to his death in 1922.
Louis' mother incidentally was Sophia
Park Rowe, a sister of Ira Lafreiniere,
well-known ship builder from Cleveland, Ohio. Her parents died when
she was an infant, and she was adopted by Oswegonians Louisa
Park and her brother, John B. Park,
an enthusiastic worker for the common school system, in which he had great
faith, and a leading dry goods merchant of the village of Oswego.
