with James STEVENS, who lived in the time of the war in America in the
Township of Pitsford in the County of Rutland in the State of Vermont.
Zenos ROSS says that he has known the said James STEVENS to have conducted
a British Officer with dispatches through part of the the American States,
that he helped the deponent with his family in order to get within British
lines and has known him to be of much service to other Loyalists.
The other deponent Wait WRIGHT saith
that the said James STEVENS house was a place of resort for scouts? and
persons on secret service in time of the war; that he has known the said
James to have ......led them through dangers and once in particular saved
a packet, carried by a British Officer, from being taken by the Enemy by
concealing it within his own jacket? ...... ... that time and many others
on the Party relieved and comforted by the said James STEVENS. Sworn
before me Alex'r FISHER, J.P. [Signed by] Zenus ROSS Wait WRIGHT"

(I have a copy of the letter somewhere in my boxes of paper but I am doing
this from memory so I might not have the names/places correct.) Filmed
with this petition, there is a copy of a letter which had been written
from one Stevens to his brother who lived somewhere around Bastard? Wolford?
Burritts? in Leeds/Grenville or Carleton. The writer was telling
his brother about how another brother [William?] was ridden out of town
on a rail for doing __ ??? ___ with Daniel or David Crippen's wife.
Unfortunately the word of exactly what he did
was illegible! The writer
also was writing to his brother to let him know that their father had died
a couple of months before and telling him how their mother was doing.
If I remember correctly, the letter also made reference to Pittsford.

Vermont, Lucy ADAMS, born 6 Jun 1771, Simsbury, Hartford CONN, (daughter
of Richard Saxton ADAMS and Lucy MATSON) occupation seamstress, died 22
Mar 1845, Lee Co Iowa. Jonathon died 1854, Fowler Tsp, St Lawrence
Co., NY. 1787 bought land Pittsford. 1790 Census Pittsford- a son
& 2 dau( a dau must have died
young) 1797 applied for land in
Canada was suppose to appear at York, was unable to. In 1804 he stated
in Petition S114, Vol 447 Bundle Misc, that he had been a private soldier
in King's Rangers commanded by Major Rogers in 1782 - asked for 300 acres.
He settled on Lot19 Con 6 first given to Sarah Buck (along the road from
Toledo to Philipsville). On Mar 28, 1809 he paid Sarah £15
for the 200 acres. It wasn't registered
until 1826. Witnesses were Elias
Chamerlin & Arnold Stevens. In 1808 had 10 children, also in 1808,
Jonathon bought lot 29 Con 3, also from Sarah Buck 200 acres for £
15.
"Sarah Buck hath sold and
lawfully conveyed to Jonathon Stevens who hath occupied the same for these
eleven years past, hath a House and Barn thereon with a large improvemnet.
and Whereas it appears Samuel Stevens to whom your Memorialist promised
a lot but before the establishment thereof the said Samuel Stevens for
flagrant crimes such as daming the King and his authority and other misdemeanors
absconded and left the government, but is now returned to the province
and is using every unfair means to supplant the aforesaid Jonathon in his
right and to obtain from the government a Deed of his farm to the total
ruin of the said Jonathon and his Family. . .confirm the aforesaid Jonathon
Stevens in his right which the aforesaid Samuel is endeavoring to make
void." signed Abel Stevens.
Samuel had received an option
on that lot but had returned to Pittsford. Various affidavits attest
to the high opinion that the neighbours held of Jonathon.
On Nov 1, 1821 Jonathan sold
Jas Weatherhead of Augusta 100 acres of pt lot 18 & 19 in Con 6 for
£150.
In 1830, 18th of August, that
Jonathan Sr. sold 75 acres(pat lot 19 Con 6) to son Henry Adams STEVENS
for £500 (why so much). Henry must have been 21 years of age putting
his birth at 1809, not 1813 as some believe. The Deed was registered
7 Nov 1852. Jonathon also received £200 for 75 acres of the same
lot from William Smith of Elmsley, 20 May 1930 (he was Henry's father-in-law).
There is a Quit Claim re south
1/2 lot 29 con 9 (£12,10sh) to Harvey S RIPLEY who had married Peggy
Gilchrist, widow of Warren Stevens. Archilbald G Stevens, yeoman,
of Herman, New York, witnessed the QC registered 22 Sept 1850.
Jonathon evidently went with
others in the family to St Lawrence Co., US where he eventually died.
His wife Lucy and son Arnold went west 1830 with the Mormons.
Lucy: The Pittsford/ Bastard
Adams were related to the 2nd President John Adams 1830/7 Lucy left with
son Arnold and the Mormon group.

From "the Tweedsmuir Histories of Bastard and South Burgess Wommen's Institutes"
originally compiled in the 1930's. Mr and Mrs J W Halladay are the
oldest residents of Philipsville. Mr
Halladay came in 1876, renting the
building now owned by S Holmes and used as a store and barber shop.
Here Mr Halladay began work at his trade of harness making, as in those
"horse and buggy" days there was an increasing demand for harness.
For a time
he boarded with th Wm Phelps family, until there came to the village a
young man named Hiram Laforty who had learned the shoe-making trade, and
wished to establish a business here. He and Mr Halladay rented the
former store of Joshwa Warren, from Alvin Halladay, where they began housekeeping
in the rooms above the store, "keeping batch" as this was termed.
Here they carried on the work of making boots
and shoes, as well as, harmess,
beside Mr Halladay also added to the business a stock of grocieries.
This arrangement
proved very satisfactory, and continued for at least two years, when Mr
Halladay's growing attachment for the "village mistress". He began
the erection of a house across the street. When this was completed
in 1881 the wedding of J W Halladay and Addie Bullard was announced and
sson after they moved into the new house. The business continued
to prosper until 1890 when the store and most of the
contents was destroyed by fire.
Mr halladay
then purchased the dwelling owned by Delorma Woods, with lot adjoining
where he built a substantial brick store. When this was completed
and furnished with an up to date stock of merchandisem his business expanded
so rapidly that it required his full time , consequently the harness making
was discontinued.
