Biography of Russell Burlingham
Burlingame, RI <Schuyler, NY>Mexico, NY
Many thanks to Esther Rancier for sharing her information on the Burlingham family. Esther is researching in Richland and Mexico the Soul/Soule, Brace and Daniel P. Smith families, and would appreciate hearing from anyone researching these surnames.  Esther Rancier at: [email protected]

             Roger Burlingame1, born 24 January 1630 in Coventry, England, came to America.  He married Mary Elizabeth Barlingstone on 19 November 1688 at Warwick, RI.  Their son John2, born 1 August 1664, married Mary Knowles Lippitt.  They had nine children.
             John and Mary’s son Roger3, born 1693, married in 1712 Sarah Baker.  They had five children.  One of these children was Jonathan4, born 1715 in Cranston, RI, married in 1732 to Phebe Hopkins.  This couple had nine children.  Their son Christopher5, born 1746, married Anne Potter.  Christopher and Anne removed to Easton, NY.  Their son Russell6  was born at Cranston in 1771.
             About this point the family was split about the spelling of the family name.  Some went into court and officially became Burlingham while others chose Burlingame.   The Mexico branch always used Burlingham form.
            In the 1880 Herkimer County, NY census Russell resided at Herkimer.  His household had 1 male 25-45; 1 male under 10; 1 female 26-45 and 1 female under 10.  The male child under 10 was Christopher7, born 1790 and who died ca. 1830.
On 4 January 1835 Russell Burlingham of Schuyler, NY purchased from Weston and Caroline Ackley and Hiriam and Sophronia Norcutt land at Mexico, NY.  By the 1840 Mexico census Russell and his wife Fanny W. were living in Mexico with 1 daughter, not identified and 5 young males.  Two older males between 20-30 were Isaac G.7, born 1816 and Russell7, born 1812.  The boy between 10-15 was Philo7 who died in 1894, aged 68.  Wife Fanny would have already been 55 years old, not likely to be the mother of a son under 10.  The remaining young boys 5-10 and 15-20 may not have been sons at all.
            Son Philo remains shrouded in mystery.  The only place where he was mentioned was in the Mexico Village Cemetery where his tombstone gave his death date as 1894, age 68 years. Those persons doing the cemetery survey in 1984 added the notation that he was the son of Russell and Fanny.  He cannot be found by name in any census, or church or marriage record.  The lack of further findings suggest he was known by another name during his life.
            In the 1850 Mexico census Russell and Fanny’s older sons were both enumerated:
Burlingham, Russell7 37 b.NY Farmer net worth $1500
* Sarah Ann 37    RI
