BAKER CEMETERY In Memory of Lucy Baker Only Daughter of Elder Nathan Baker, who departed this life July 3, 1803 The above is the earliest burial found, which indicates the cemetery is very old. The stone itself is very unique, and has withstood the elements remarkably. The letter cutting is similar to a unical type. Elder Nathan Baker is mentioned in early church history. He was one of the members who formed the Baptist Society at Fayetteville as early as 1800. He was among the early members of the Pompey and Manlius Church The Baker Cemetery is located on the west side of Pompey Center Road. It is situated in a wooded area about three miles north of Pompey Center on Town Lot 31. Oran J., son of Joseph and Lucy Baker, d. 5 Aug. 1827, ae 11y. J. Baker - d. June 18(25)? Clark, Sarah d. April 3, 1847, ae 87-7. It is possible that her husband is buried here, however his place of burial is not given. Ephraim Clark was a pioneer who married Sarah Smith in Ridgefield, Conneticut, Jan. 8, 1784. She died in Pompey in April 1847, where they had settled. The name is in the roll of the Continentals from Durham, Conneticut, in 1775, and in Southington, in 1790. Probable. His will was made July 10, 1823, and proved Oct. 16, 1826. Sarah surviving him. Rev. W. W. Beauchamp’s records of 1914 indicate the Ephraim’s stone was taken to Pompey Cemetery. Carleton, Hannah- d. Aug. 1850 ae 57 y., wf of Dr. B Carleton. Carleton, Dr. Benjamin- d. 14 June 1840 ae 56y. Dr. Carleton is not mentioned in local history. He would have been old enough to have been in the War of 1812. Cooley, Lewis- d. 4 Feb. 1857, ae 80 y. Too young to bwe a Revolutionary Soldier, but old enough to have been in the war of 1812. Fisher, Joanna- d. 18 Apr. 1857, ae 77y. She was a relict of the late Ira Slater, and wife of Ebenezer Fisher. Hibbard, Daniel W.-d. 17 Dec. 1854, ae 18y., Co. F, 16th N.Y. Heavy Art’y. Hibbard cannot be found in any records. He is not listed in N.Y. in the War of the Rebellion 1861-65 by Fiedevich Phister. Hodges, John M.- d.30 May, 1842, ae 58y. Eligible for War of 1812. Ives, Asenath-d. 21 Oct. 1865, ae 79y., wf. of Chauncey Ives. Ives, Chauncey-d. 15 Feb. 1837, ae 60y. Ives, Chauncey S.-d. 14 Oct. (?), ae 45y. Chauncey Ives was the son of John Ives, a Revolutionary veteran of Pompey. James, William- d. 17 Aug. 1812, ae 25 y. son of Daniel and Mary of Weybridge, Vermont. An early burial, but no information concerning the family. As early as 1805, a store was being operated under the firm name of James and Cummings, at Manlius. Possible connection. Jobes, Catherine- d. 1835, wf. of James S. Jobes. Other small stones are nearby with initials C.J. and C.B. Catherine was the only child of Josiah and Eleanor Barton. Marsh, Mary- d. 27 Oct. 1842, ae 23 y., wf. of George Marsh. Marsh, Edward or Howard- d. 14 Mar. 1853, ae 56y. Marsh, Parmelia- d. 25 Nov. 1866, ae 70y. Marsh, Thomas- d. 3 July 18(?) The above mentioned names were taken from a small shaft (about seven feet), lying on the ground. There may be an inscription on the side next to the ground. This shaft is not broken, simply fallen from it’s base. Newman, Carleton B.- d. 14 July 1841, ae 16-4y. There is another small stone with initials C.B.N. Carleton is the son of Orace Newman, born in Pompey in 1800 and Lovina Wilson Newman. Amos and Elizabeth Newman came from Vermont at a very early date and settled in Pompey. Others of the family may be buried here. Rice, Simeon- d. 14 Dec. 1846, ae 25y. Sutherland, Sarah- d. 23 May 1869, ae 90y. Sutherland, Delia- d. 16 Sept. 1842, ae ?, dau. of Reuben and sarah Sutherland, Nelson- d. April 1856, ae 19-2. Sutherland, Martha Maria- d. 11 Nov. 1851, ae. 15y., dau. of Hiram and Laura. Two small stones are nearby. The sutherlands were early settlers in Pompey. Reuben Sutherland born 1773, came to Pompey about 1800. A son, Hiram, was born in Manchester in 1798, and his son Wallace, was born in Pompey in 1832. Bert W. Sutherland, who resided in Manlius a few years ago was a son of Wallace. Wheelock, Loretta S- d. 8 Sept. 1865, ae 62y., wf. of F F Wheelock Wheelock, F.F.- b. Mar. 18, 1799, d. Dec. 18, 1866. F.F. would be too young for the War of 1812.
