MARRIAGES AND DEATHS FROM THE SOUTH SIDE OBSERVER

October 29, 1886; Friday

DEATH OF MRS. A. T. STEWART.

Mrs. Cornelia Mitchell Stewart, widow of the late A. T. Stewart, died of pneumonia, on Monday evening at her home at Fifth avenue and Thirty- fourth street. She had just passed her eighty-third birthday. About three years ago Mrs. Stewart had an attack of heart trouble which nearly proved fatal and since then Dr. Minor has visited her daily. She was apparently in her usual health up to Saturday evening when she had a chill which was quickly followed by pneumonia. The body was not embalmed and the funeral took place yesterday at Garden City Cathedral. In accordance with the wishes of Mrs. Stewart the funeral was very quiet, none but family and personal friends being invited. There were no pall bearers. Bishop Littlejohn and Rev. Arthur Brooks conducted the services, assisted by Rev. Dr. Vandewater, Dr. Moore and others of the Cathedral clergy. After the services the body was placed in the receptacle built for it in the crypt. The velvet covered rosewood coffin had six silver handles and a plate containing the name, date of death and age. Mrs. Stewart passed a quiet and unostentatious life after the death of Mr. Stewart, spending the winter in New York and summer at the Grand Union Hotel in Saratoga. Her personal character has become a subject of enconium among those who knew her well. She had two children, both of whom died in infancy. She leaves three half sisters, a nephew and a niece. It is not yet known what disposition has been made of the vast estate, but it is supposed that Judge Hilton will control a good deal of it.
