      S. N. JAQUAY, 83, DIES IN GARDEN 
 
WAR VETERAN FALLS DEAD WHILE TALKING TO WIFE. 
 
            OLDEST MARRIED COUPLE 
 
    Aged Man Would Have Celebrated Fifty-ninth Wedding Anniversary  
                  in August---Well-known Carpenter

    CANASTOTA, June 17 - Samuel N. Jaquay, 83, one of the oldest and best 
known citizens of the village, died suddenly at his home in Lamb Avenue, this
afternoon. 
    Mr. Jaquay had been an invalid for twenty years, and for twelve years had
been unable to do any work.  At times he was able to be about the garden and 
yard surrounding his home. While in the yard conversing with his wife this 
afternoon Mr. Jaquay suddenly fell forward to the ground and died before Dr. 
H. G. Germere, who resides a short distance from the Jaquay home, could reach
him. 
    His death terminates the distinction held by Mr. and Mrs. Jaquay of being
the oldest couple as to years of wedded life spent in Canastota.   In August,
1856 Mr. Jaquay married Miss Cornelia Roberts of this town.  They have since 
lived together continuously in Canastota and vicinity and would have observed
their fifty-ninth wedding anniversary in August. 
    Samuel N. Jaquay was born at Salisbury October 13, 1832.  Sixty-one years
ago he came to Canastota to reside.  He was a carpenter and assisted in the 
construction of many buildings in this vicinity. His services were often 
sought by contractors as a shingler.  His last work on a building was 
performed twelve years ago, when he assisted  in the construction of the 
large barns on Byron Taber's farm. 
    During the Civil War Mr. Jaquay served in Company G. 157th Regiment, New 
York Volunteers, leaving Madison County for the front with several other 
residents of this vicinity.  Long marches, exposure and other hardships of 
war made inroads on Mr. Jaquay's health, and twenty years ago he was seized 
with a painful affection of the legs. 
    Surviving besides the widow, is one son, Herbert G. Jaquay, of this 
village, an insurance representative well known throughout Central New York.
The son left for Herkimer a few minutes before his father's death.  He 
returned to Canastota this evening.

Jaquays. He is buried in Lenox Rural Cemetery.]
