 CANASTOTA- John B. Rice, 73, of 341 Roberts St., died Thursday evening, Aug.
26, 1999, in the Oneida Healthcare Center, where he had been admitted 
earlier, after suffering a heart attack.
 
Born in Oneida on May 9, 1926, he was the son of Dominick and Anna Ridolfo 
Rice. A resident of Canastota for many years, Mr. Rice was educated in the 
Oneida schools. 
 
He married Nancy Sgarlata in St. Agatha's Church, on Nov. 13, 1948. 
 
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Rice was self-employed as a mason and tile 
contractor. He and his wife operated the Five Corners Restaurant in Oneida 
for several years, selling the restaurant to their daughter, Nancy. 
 
He was a Communicant of St. Agatha's Church, a member of the Local No. 68 of 
the Tile, Marble and Terrazzo Helpers, and was a former member of the 
American Legion, Oneida Post 169, and the Order of the Owls, Nest 1606. 
 
A veteran of World War II, Mr. Rice served with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. 
Merchant Marines in the Pacific JohnB. Rice Theatre. 
 
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and card player.

Surviving besides his wife, Nancy, are two sons and daughters-in-law, Dominic
J. and MarilynRice of Oneida and JohnD. andMaryanne Rice of Canastota; one 
daughter and son-in-law, Nancy.and Robert Stratton of Oneida; one brother, 
Joseph Rice of Oneida; one sister, Rose M. Graziano of Oneida; seven grand-
children, Kelly Scale, Amy Rice, Jason Rice, Billy Stratton, Stacy Hilliker, 
Kelly Cassell and Brian Gassell; three greatgrandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews.
