Livingston County was formed in 1821 from Genesee and Ontario Counties. It is surrounded by Monroe County, Ontario County, Steuben County, Allegany County, Wyoming County and Genessee County. Geneseo is the county seat. Livingston County was named after Robert R Livingston, a delegate to the 1775 Continental Congress and member of the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence. Robert Livingston was also the father-in-law to Richard Montgomery, for whom Montgomery County is named.
Please remember that county lines have changed since their original conception. The area now know as Livingston County was part of Albany County when counties were formed in 1683. The original Albany County included all of northern New York, the state of Vermont, and, theoretically extended to the Pacific Ocean. Albany County was divided and Tryon County was formed in 1772. Tryon County covered most of western portion of Albany County and now extended, theoretically, to the Pacific Ocean. In 1784, Tryon County was renamed Montgomery County. In 1789, Ontario County was formed from Montgomery County. In 1802, Genesee County was formed from Ontario County. Finally, in 1821, Livingston County was formed from portions of Ontario and Genesee Counties. In 1856, Livingston County gained some territory from Allegany County. While it may look like your ancestor moved, it may be that they stayed in the same place, but the formation of new counties necessitated a different location for the records.
