Esther Mitchell Sanford
Esther MITCHELL Sanford, was born 09 Nov 1810, Lower Makefield,Bucks Co.,PA the daughter of Mahlon and Letitia(Margerum) Mitchell. Her father brought his family from Bucks Co.,PA to Shamokin,Northumberland Co.,PA about 1817. Then about 1825 he brought his wife and family of twelve children to what was then Sparta,Livingston Co.,NY where their youngest daughter Letitia was born 10 May 1826. Mahlon was said to have lived in Springwater, although in an 1859 map of Ontario County his home is shown to be in Naples, but very close to the border of Springwater, he died 14 Nov 1862 and is buried in the Garlinghouse Cemetery in the town of Naples. Esther, his daughter, married 29 Mar 1832 in Springwater Soton Sanford, son of Elisaph and Rebecca(Wheeler) Sanford. They were married at a double wedding, together with John Reed and Rebecca Piatt. Soton Sanford and John Reed were cousins. Like her mother, Esther also had thirteen children, born between 1833 and 1854. In 1847, Soton and Esther were living in a log house that stood on the southwest corner of land owned by Erwin Perkins in 1932, just north of Douglas Odell's. Apparently Soton sold this land and lived for some years on the farm where Arch Francis was living in 1932. Soton was a shoemaker and farmer, and when he died, 28 Dec 1859, he and someone else were drawing wood from either the East or West Hill and it had been an icy winter, as the horses started they through Soton and ran over him, Benjamin Sweeten found him. Esther lived over 40 years after the death of her husband and was known as Grandma Sanford. Lloyd Moose wrote, " She was a woman of lovely Christian character, and how I did enjoy to sit and visit with her. Her many years did not seem to hang heavy, but seemed to be to her as an added blessing, and she could truely say with the prophet, Zechariah, At even time it shall be light" Esther died 13 Sept 1901 and is buried next to her daughter, Rebecca Staley, in the Wayland Village Cemetery.
