Lt. Colonel John E. Wool
Chapter SSWGBSNY
The New York Society of the General Society of the War of 1812 traces it's origins back to the 19th Century.
When shortly after Sept. 14, 1814 a New York State Society of 1812 Veterans was formed,
taking lead from the Baltimore Defenders Association-Society in Maryland aka Maryland Society.
This Society was known as the Society of the War of 1812 in the State of New York.
As the 19th century drew to a close, the ranks of the state's 1812 veterans grew thinner and the Veterans
relied more and more on their Descendants as New Members to carry on.
On 14 April 1894 the Maryland and New York societies formed the General Society of the War of 1812,
with each of the constituent societies becoming a state society.
Following on July 3rd, 1896 in Plattsburgh,
The Society of the Second War With Great Britain in the State of New York (SSWGBSNY)
was formally Organized; having changed it's Name from the Society of the War of 1812 in the State of New York.
