Introduction

wpe3.jpg (174295 bytes)The Reformed Congregation of Leeds has within its bounds the site of the Old Reformed Dutch Church of Catskill, which was dedicated in 1733. The village of Leeds is the site of the settlement of old Catskill.  But by a peculiar trend of circumstances, the present Reformed Church of Leeds finds itself deprived of both the name and the records of the old church, of which it is the legitimate successor.  On this account, it has been thought proper to make the historical article more complete than would ordinarily be required for a church established in the year 1833.

The Vital Records of the Protestant Reformed Dutch Church of Leeds are contained in one small volume, which has been completely transcribed on pages 1 to 95.  The original record is in poor sequence.  In this transcript the order of some of the records has been rearranged to make them chronologically consecutive, without the usual explanatory foot notes.

In 1842, the united Congregation of Leeds and Kiskatom separated, in much the same manner that the churches composing the old Catskill Congregation had separated in 1833.  In a Supplement in the back of this bound volume, the Vital Records of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kiskatom have been transcribed, for the period between 1842 and 1850.

A description of the various original records will be found on page 141.
