Lexington Census
1850
Microfilm Series: M432, Roll 510, Pages 271 through 297 (52 total pages)

Researching the Decker, Deyoe, Martin, Schermerhorn, Van Valkenburgh families.
Notes:
1. Several families listed twice (Richard Deyo, Daniel Lament, Morgan Coon,
Benj Noel, John Hoes/Goes, Peter Taylor Miller).
2. How many families were missed? (Christopher Deyoe, and probably others)
3. There were 2262 people. It appears that all residents were white, since the
box for Color was usually left blank, or checked.
4. Names highlighted in blue
appear in my database of records.
5. "Place of Birth" was typically recorded only for the Head of the household -
others probably shared the same place of birth.
6. I added maiden names in brackets…[Smith].
This was done to help me determine
relationships. This was not part of the census -- just
something added while researching these families. Perhaps this will help
others.
7. Wealthiest residents included: Aaron Bushnell $17,000, Eli
Humphrey $16,000, Abner Wright $8000, and Cornelius Conine $8000
8. The handwriting on the original document was not always the
easiest to read. Check original record for comparison. The number "3" often
looked similar to the number "5." Lower case "r" and lower case "s" were also
similar. The census taker did not know how to spell "Louisa," "Corydon" and
"Romaine."
9. Mr. McMann, the census taker clearly made errors and
misspellings. Hopefully I haven't made other mistakes in transcribing.
