Great Imboght District Tax List
1789
Transcribed by Sylvia Hasenkopf from original documents located at the State Library in Albany, 11th Floor, Manuscripts Division. In these early years of the new country, the United States of America, New York State taxes were not collected each year automatically. In order to collect taxes the State Assembly had to vote on the measure, authorizing taxes to be collected for the following year.

By Virtue of the Powers vested in Me,
I Require and command you, to GATHER, LEVY, COLLECT and RECEIVE of, and from all and every Person or Persons, charged within the annexed TAX-LIST, or ESTIMATE, amounting in all to the Sum of Forty Nine pounds in Bills of Credit, issued by Virtue of an Act, entitled, “An Act for emitting Two Hundred Thousand Pounds in Bills of Credit, for the Purposes therein mentioned,” passed 18th April, 1786, or the Bills of credit emitted as a Substitute for the same, and Gold and Silver Coin, so that you may have and pay the same to John N. Bleecker, County Treasurer, on or before the first Day of February next, retaining to yourself One Shilling per Pound for collecting ---
And if any Person or Persons shall deny, refuse or neglect to pay unto you, the several Sum or Sums of Money, he she or they are charged with as aforesaid, it shall and may be lawful for you, to distrain such Person or Persons, his, her or their Goods and Chattels, and the Distress or Distresses so taken to dispose of as the Law doth direct. HEREOF you are not to fail at your Peril; and for your so doing this shall be your sufficient WARRANT.
