"He was a man of sterling integrity and high character and very much respected - In early manhood he joined the Smithfield Presbyterian Church and was for many years a ruling elder in that church in whose affairs he ever bore a leading part. Always taking a great interest in public affairs, he kept up an intelligent observation of current events even up to the last years of his advanced age. He was a strong republican and a good citizen, a man greatly esteemed by a wide circle of friends."

Note from the bible's current owner:
This is one of three family bibles I received after my father's sister, Amanda Frances Haviland McCaw, died. She had been living in her father's house in Millville, NJ and he (Virgil Haviland) had apparently inherited all of them from his father, Girard P. Haviland.

Daniel Carpenter is my 3 great grandfather. According to the History of Dutchess Co by J. H. Smith, p 442 and the Commemorative Biographical Record, p 21 his grandfather, Daniel Carpenter, for whom he apparently was named, came to Dutchess Co. from Long Island in 1752. He and his wife, Sarah Hall, lived in Crum Elbow, Hyde Park until his death in 1777. They had 6 children, one of whom, Benjamin, b. 11 July 1749, d. 17 Jan 1837, was the father of the owner of this bible.

Benjamin lived in Crum Elbow on land given him by his father. He later purchased land in Stanford, where he died in 1837. He was a Patriot and was persecuted by the Tories for raising a company for the Colonial army. His home was robbed 3 times and on other occasions he was saved by his "immense greyhound". He married, 9 September 1773, Mary Pugsley, daughter of Samuel Pugsley of Westchester. They had 8 children.

Their son, Daniel, owner of this family bible, resided in Amenia. He and his wife, Zayde PerLee Carpenter are buried in the Smithfield Burying Ground.

Their son, Benjamin, and Tamma E. Huntting, had a daughter, Amanda Carpenter. Amanda married my great grandfather, Girard P. Haviland. See Girard P. Haviland family bible.
