YOUNG/GILMAN Peter S. YOUNG, born at Caldwell's Manor, Quebec, Canada 5 July 1819, married to Sabrina GILMAN on 29 June, 1848. Sabrina was the daughter of I. and Dolly (ATKINS) GILMAN. Sabrina was born about 1820 (where?) First child of Peter and Sabrina, Mary YOUNG, was born in Black Brook, NY 29 June 1849. Possibly another child, Dolly YOUNG born to them before the family left Clinton County for Sauk County, Wisconsin where they live from 1850 on. According to family legend, my ggg-grandfather, Isaac ROBERTS (b 1804 Mountmellick, Queen's [now Laois] Co., IRL), a Quaker, came to upstate NY in about 1823 through Quebec, with letters of introduction to the Peru Monthly Meeting. Was there such a MM in Clinton Co., or in NY state? He supposedly learned the shoemaking trade while in NY. He eventually went to New Sharon, ONT, CAN, where he was married in 1831 to another Quaker, Elizabeth Balderston Doan.

John Davis 15 May 1998
I have been trying for some time to develop information on my ancestor, Benjamin Franklin Whipple, 1812-1904. All I knew was that he was born in New York or Vermont, migrated to Brooks County, Georgia and fought for the 12th Georgia militia during the Civil War. I recently found his wife's application for "Indigent Widows of Confederate Soldiers" which indicates his birthplace as Clinton County, New York. While his year of birth is unclear, I believe it to be 1812. His gravestone in Brooks County, Ga. indicates his date of birth was October 25, 1812. However, in different censuses, he listed ages which would make his year of birth as 1819. Can anyone provide me with more information?

ALLEN Stuck in New York Query. My ancestor George W. ALLEN was born in New York State in about 1818. He was married to a M. ALDRIDGE who passed away after 1843. They had at least one son, named Josephus, born in 1843 in NY. When reviewing the 1830, 1840, 1850 NY Census on the ALLEN Stuck In New York Website, there was a George W. ALLEN and a Josephus ALLEN listed in Clinton Co. Because of the unusual spelling of the name, this may have been a relative or brother to George W. ALLEN. Josephus ALLEN passed away in 1912 in Linton ND. His death certificate and obituary state that he was born to George W. ALLEN and M. (ALDRIDGE). The obit states that he was born in the old ALLEN home in Herkimer, NY. I have contacted the county historical society there to no avail. Any information would be appreciated.

Jim Fifield 6 May 1998
I'm trying to find more info on an ancestor William Fifield who lived in Mooers's around 1800, he married Nancy Bedell in 1824 and I have his death in 1842. 1st, was he buried in Mooer's? 2nd, his wife Nancy remarried a Samuel Muzzy--did they stay in Clinton County? 3rd, and most important there were other Fifield's in Clinton County around the same time these were Daniel, John, Kimbal, Nathan, William and Issac. Is there anything to say these men were brothers or cousins? William is my ancestor I know and he stayed in Clinton Co. Kimball is in the Co. in 1850 census but his wife and son show in St.Lawrence Co. in the 1860 census. Do anyone have any info on Kimball's death. Can anyone provide me with more information?

His father could be Charles, John, Thomas or Eleazer MILLER. Family history says he was from England. The family moved to Onondaga County, NY, several years after his birth. Does anyone have any advice? information? or tips?

Margaret Frazier Bowman 4 May 1998
My ancestor, Col. George Tyler, was reported to have fought in the War of 1812, as a colonel, in Plattsburgh. He was born in Vermont, and moved to Ohio shortly after the War of 1812. He was proud enough of his rank to have it on his tombstone. Just curious if you can verify that he did in fact serve in that war with any military units from or related to Plattsburgh.

Can anyone provide me wife information on Florence Roberts, her parents, her siblings, etc. Please respond to my email address at the bottom of this message or to my postal address. Thanks. The 1870 and 1880 census of Rock Island County, Illinois listed a Peter Roberts (1870) and Peter Robberts (1880) who were French. Since Etienne Loiselle was French and Catholic and Florence was Catholic, I suspect that maybe this was her father.
Etienne LOISELLE was born on 28 Jan 1832 in St. Joachim of Chateauguay (Quebec).1 He died on 19 Feb 1916 in Holcombe, Wisconsin.13 Etienne Loiselle: born January 28, 1832 at St. Joachim of Chateauguay, Etienne Parant (Godfather), Magdeleine Richard (Godmother), baptized January 29, 1832 by P. Grenier (Priest), died February 19, 1916 at Holcombe, Wisconsin, married (Rock Island (Alexander County?), Illinois - October 28, 1857) Florence Roberts, born March 25, 1841 (obituary says Febuary 25, death certificate says March 25) at Plattburg, New York, daughter of Peter Roberts and Mary Roberts (of Canada), died July 29, 1898 at Boyd, Wisconsin.
Etienne (Stephen) lived in St. Philomene of Chateauguay until he was 14 years of age. From then until he was 23 years old, he worked up the Quebec River lumbering. In 1854 he moved to Rock Island, Illinois where he married Florence Roberts. Miss Florence Roberts was born at Plattburg, New York on March 25, 1841 (obituary says Febuary 25, death certificate says March 25, daughter of Peter Roberts and Mary Roberts of Canada). She lived there until the summer of 1855 when her family moved to Rock Island, Illinois.

I am researching my family in the Champlain/ Rouses Point area. On the 1870 census, my g-g-g grandfather, Zebulon Gilman was a captain of a lake boat on Lake Champlain. The census also indicates that several of his children worked on the boat. Family story says he ran barges to New York City. Can you tell me what you may know about small boats/barges on Lake Champlain. Any information appreciated.

The family I'm researching is named RYAN. Two children were supposedly born in Chazy and Mooers in 1857 and 1858, so I tried the 1860 census hoping they were still there. They weren't. However, I found about 20 other RYAN families--mostly in Mooers. So my question is general...Do you know if most of those Ryan families came from the same general area in Ireland? Do you know where? What brought them to Mooers?

I seek information on the following families from the Clinton County, New York / Grand Is le County, Vermont area: Mumley, Carpentier / Carpenter / Charpentier, Monarch / Monarque / Monat, Letourneau / Laturno. Does anyone know the ethnic origin of the name Mumley? I can't seem to find evidence of it before 1840. Key ancestors are my great-grandparents:
Benjamin Mumley, probably born in New York circa 1842, died March 1907 in Alburg, Vermont, and his wife, Josephine or "Fozeine" Letourneau / Laturno, probably born in Canada on March 23, 1853, died in August 1906 in Alburg, Vermont (Parents of Edward John Mumley, my grandfather, born April 2, 1885 in Alburg, Vermont -- where many of his descendants currently live).

Can anyone identify Millard P. BELL, b. 1814 PA, d. 1868 UT?
Millard P. Bell was born in Lancaster Co., Pa., in 1814, supposedly the son of John and Margaret Bell. Some years later, his family removed to eastern New York, where Millard married Margaret [POWERS?]. They had a daughter, Melissa, born in NY ca. 1837. Family records reference NY, VT, and the Burlington area as places where they lived. So it's quite possible that they lived in Clinton County in the 1830s.
By 1840, Millard and Margaret moved to Milton, Trumbull Co., Ohio. By 1850 they were living in Defiance, Defiance Co., Ohio, where they were the parents of: Melissa, Demetrius, Caroline, Metcalf, V.S., and Anna. Around 1859, Millard apparently abandoned this family, leaving for the west. He wound up in Salt Lake City, where he re-married and began a second family. He died in Salt Lake in 1868.
Seeking info on Millard, his ancestry, his first wife (Margaret), or children of his family in Ohio.

Leah Prindle Veatch 3 Dec 1997
My gr-grandfather was Lawrence Eugene Prindle (Feb. 17, 1824 -Dec.24, 1875). He was apparently born in Plattsburgh, N.Y. His wife's name was Syble Amelia Jones. I cannot find any record of this man in N.Y. I have found other "Prindle" people that were in the area around the same time, but I've had a hard time with this. There was a Zera Prindle in the 1820 & 1830 census, but not before or after that time. Lawrence named his second child (a hunch it was a boy) "Zera E.", and I wondered if Lawrence's father's name was Zera. If you could help me with any of this...the name of Lawrence's parents or even who this Zera Prindle was I'd be most grateful. Can anyone provide me with further information?

Vicki Titus 2 Dec 1997
I am trying to connect up the John Tryon on the 1800 census (Fryon on some indexes) and the William on the 1810. I suspect that they are actually from Greene Co. NY. The John Tryon I am tracing there disappears about 1798 or so.
I suspect that John died between the 1800 and 1810 census and it is his son William listed on the 1810 census of Clinton Co. NY, along with 2 others in the family.
After 1810, I suspect that William removed to Franklin Co. NY and is the William who appears on the 1830 census there.
Are there any records in your sources that might help prove this theory of mine?

Larry D. Loiselle 2 Dec 1997
I am looking for information on the Roberts family. Their daughter's death certificate indicated that they were from Canada. They moved from Plattburg, New York to Rock Island, Illinois. Peter Roberts and his wife Mary (Maiden name unknown) had at least one child: Florence Roberts: born March 25, 1841 (obituary says Febuary 25, death certificate says March 25) at Plattburg, New York. She died on July 29,1898 at Boyd, Wisconsin. The 1860 census in Rock Island, Illinois did list an Arthur P. Roberts with a wife by the name of Mary. Could this be the same man (P. = Peter?)? On October 28, 1857, under the rights of the Catholic Church, Etienne (Stephen) Loiselle and Florence Roberts were married. They stayed in Rock Island, Illinois until 1861. He worked on the river and in northern Tennesse. Hearing of the rich laurels to be obtained in the frontier, they left for northern Wisconsin on a steamboat named Monitor on June 28, 1861. They arrived in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin on July 4, 1861. Can anyone supply information on this Roberts family and relatives, etc.?

Need information (marriage, census, or anything) on Jean-Baptiste RIEL who was the father of Marie Riel. Marie was born 30 January 1865, baptized 23 October 1867 in Keeseville, Essex, Co., NY and died 19 July 1928 in Portland, Oregon. She married Zeb (Eusebe) WOOD 22 January 1882 in Redford, NY, son of Francois (Eli) CHARLEBOIS-WOOD and Marguerite BRULE.
Jean Baptiste RIEL married Marie Elizabeth ("Eliza") GAGNON (who was born 18 October 1842 in St.Gervais, Bellechase, PQ). He then died about the time that Marie RIEL was born. Unfortunately,I found out that the name Jean-Baptiste RIEL is a common name in upper New York!
Is this Jean Baptiste RIEL a son of Jean Baptiste RIEL & Flavie ROBIDOUX who married 13 Aug 1827 at St-Constant-de-LaPrairie,PQ? This couple acted as the godparents of Flavie TESSIER on 27 Nov 1860 at Dannemora, Clinton Co., NY. Do they even have a son by the name of Jean Baptiste RIEL?
Or could Jean Baptiste RIEL be the Jean-Baptiste Riel who was baptized 9 Dec 1833 at St-Phillip-de-LaPraire,PQ (son of Francois Riel & Margaret Menard). This couple had two children baptized in Keeseville, Essex Co., NY in 1856. Or is there another Jean-Baptiste Riel who is my ancestor?
After Marie Elizabeth Gagnon remarried Francois Henault, godparents for her third child (Genevieve Henault) were Alexis Laliberte and Philomine RIEL (on 26 May 1871) in Keeseville, NY. This Philomine RIEL is probably related to my Jean-Baptiste RIEL but how?

I am searching for the parents of Jane WHITE who married Jehiel BEARDSLEY. She was born Aug 6, 1781, died June 24, 1842, buried in Beardsley Cemetery east of Clintonville, town of Ausable, Clinton Co., NY. Jane lived her entire married life at Ausable, NY. Her children were Elizabeth (marr TRAVIS), Rachel, Gifford, Asher, Edward, Sally (marr LEET), Sylvia (marr MACOMBER), Isabela Maria (marr FLINT), Betsy (marr HOWARD), Joseph (marr STRONG). I believe Jane may be a descendent of William WHITE from the Mayflower. I have searched for years & this is my last hope. If anyone has any information, please call me collect at (916) 682-3574 or (916) 682-1655 or e-mail at [email protected]. Hoping to hear from someone.
