OLSON, Cpl. Walter Olsen. Residence - Town of Ellery. 21 year old Walter Olsen was among the ten airmen who perished in a B-50 bomber crash, along the marshlands of Rocky Fish Creek, near Savannah, Ga. He was a boom operator on the plane’s crew. He operated the gas lines for mid-air refueling operations. The plane, one of the Air Force’s largest, was about seven miles from its destination at Hunter Air Force Base, when the crash occurred. The plane had been due to land at the Base at 9:45 p.m. Enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Jan. 1951 in California. He had spent three months in England was stationed at Hunter Air Force Base at the time of his death.
