Military Service: Civil War (POW) Veteran:
49th Regiment, Co. K, NY Volunteers. Enlisted August 26, 1861, at Jamestown, NY. Served 3 years, mustered in as a PVT.. On October 15, 1862, was Captured In Action (POW), near Fairfax Courthouse, VA, and was Paroled May 12, 1864.

Zebulon was granted his pension on December 24, 1900, and received it in Frewsburg, NY

Colonel Jeremiah C. Drake. Colonel Drake was mortally wounded leading the
112th regiment in an assault on the Confederate works at Cold Harbor on
June 1, 1864.

Charles Ostrye
Charles Ostrye born 23 Apr 1847 Sucha, Bydgoszcz, Poland. Came to US with parents in August 1852. Settled in Dunkirk and then family moved to French Creek in 1864. Charles served with the15th New York Engineers group from Chautauqua Co. He was discharged in 1865 at end of war and returned to French Creek where he farmed until his death . He is buried in St. Matthias Cemetery, French Creek, Chautauqua , NY along with his wife Mary Sullivan.

This man is my G G Grandfather Born Michigan died Ellery, Chautauqua Co NY.
Husband of Olive Augusta COBB b 7/13/1845 Fentonville Chaut. Co NY.
Married in Calhoun Co MI 1865, she died Mayville Chaut. CO NY 1915 buried Mayville.

Dennis was wounded in the Battle of Resaca, GA. He carried a minnie ball
lodged in his lung and later developed TB and when he knew he was dying,
brought his wife and kids back from Clay Co., South Dakota to Ellery, he died
2 weeks later. The oldest son, William b 1868 , making the trip on horse back, alone.

CDV Image
This is a CDV image of Alfred A. Stratton, who served in Company G, 147th
New York Volunteer Infantry. He was a double amputee after being wounded at
the Battle of Petersburg. After losing both of his arms during the war he
traveled around selling these CDV's to make his living

Soon after the end of the war the photographs taken for medical reasons were
being used in an increasingly wide manner. As noted, the Museum exhibited
the photographs, not just in Washington but throughout the country at
expositions. After the war, disabled veterans used their photographs to
support themselves in a variety of ways. Private Alfred Stratton took the
most direct route. During the war, he endured a double amputation of both
arms in 1864 and, as a result, received a pension of twenty-five dollars a
month. In 1869, he visited the Museum and had his photograph taken. In later
years, he sold carte-de-visites of himself in a uniform as a disabled
soldier.
