    Descendants of
Barnabas BRUNSON of Percy Township, Newcastle District, Upper Canada

      INTRODUCTION

The following genealogy represents seven generations of the known
descendants of Barnabas Brunson (1744-1822) who immigrated to Percy Twp.,
Newcastle District, Upper Canada about 1797. This rural area is now known as
Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada.  As records for Upper
Canada are rather sparse, there may be a number of inaccuracies and
omissions, especially among Barnabas Brunson's earlier descendants.

This genealogy has been limited to seven generations in order to protect the
privacy of living individuals. For this reason, I have also suppressed some
details about the youngest members of the seventh generation. Please contact
me at [email protected]  if you are aware of any other omissions or
errors in this family history or if you feel you may be connected.

Researchers who are interested in Barnabas Brunson's ancestors are invited
to e-mail Richard "Dick" Bronson of Spokane, Washington at [email protected]
Dick has provided me with enormous assistance in compiling this genealogy,
especially with those of  Barnabas Brunson's descendants who made their home
in the United States.  I am also indebted to several other researchers who
are mentioned in sections relevant to their branches of this Brunson family.

This genealogy is intended for personal use only.

    Generation 1

    1. Barnabas1 BRUNSON, born 10 Dec 1744 in Farmington, Connecticut, United
States; died about 22 Feb 1822 in Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario,
Canada. He married in the United States,

    1. Charity Huggaboom; 2. Hannah ???.

    Notes for Barnabas BRUNSON

Dick Bronson of Spokane, Washington, has linked Barnabas Brunson of Percy
Twp., Newcastle District, Upper Canada, back to Richard Bronson, a founder
of both Hartford and Farmington, Connecticut. By the time Barnabas was born,
his family had been in the United States for more than 100 years and Brunson
descendants were numerous. Dick Bronson says that there were even two
Barnabas Brunsons born in 1744, one the son of Roger Bronson of New Milford,
Connecticut and the other one was my ancestor. The men were confused in
various sources, including an early Bronson genealogy by Enderton. My
ancestor Barnabas is believed to be the fourth son of Moses and Hannah
(Kelsey) Brunson, but I am at loss to explain why he named none of his
children after his parents or to describe his movements after he left
Farmington, Connecticut. However, he is believed to have moved to the
Massachussets/ New York border in the Green River/Hillsdale area of Columbia
Co., perhaps for military service. He was married twice, first to Charity
(Huggaboom) Hogeboom and then to Hannah. His five children are Charity's.

Cutter's History of Western New York, Vol.1, p.492, 1912, mentions that
Barnabas "removed to Canada." This also fits with the story Elizabeth Turner
Brunson tells in The History of Abel Brunson andHis Family 1786-1903. Land
records indicate that Barnabas moved into Canada about 1797, accompanied by
his second wife Hannah, his oldest son Amasa and his married daughter
Lavinia. Although his exact relationship to Barnabas is unclear, William
Brunson also moved into the Newcastle District at this time as did other
founding families from the Hartford, Connecticut area, including descendants
of Rev. Samuel Stone. They must have been attracted by the virgin timber in
what was essentially a primordial forest. Although Barnabas and Amasa
Brunson were not officially recorded as Loyalists, they somehow qualified
for substantial land grants along the Percy/Seymour Twp. border. Barnabas'
property was located on Lot 24 in Conc.2. Various land records refer to
Barnabas' holdings as either Percy or Seymour Twp., but the Brunsons
themselves knew their home as Cramahe or "Crammie" in Newcastle District,
Upper Canada, although by 1870 their official postal address was Warkworth,
    Ontario.

Two hundred years after Barnabas immigrated, I visited his property in the
early spring of 1997, after hiking inland and fording a small stream. Land
records indicate that Barny's descendants had remained on this property for
over 100 years, but the only sign of their tenancy now is a small barn and
an even smaller house foundation. The property is isolated, but a local
lumber mill, now a picturesque ruin, ensured that the Brunsons would not be
alone. The Crydermans, the Masters, the Stones and the Tripps had all
immigrated with them. Their families intermarried and prospered through
sheer hard work. But they had no time for anything else and churches and
schools were few and far between in Upper Canada. Educated in an
established, progressive community like Farmington, Connecticut, Barnabas
the immigrant could read and write, but his descendants remained
functionally illiterate for nearly 100 years.

Barnabas Brunson of Percy Township, Newcastle District, Upper Canada, wrote
his last will and testament 18 Sep 1820. This will was probated 22 Feb 1822,
presumably after his death. Heirs included his beloved wife Hannah who kept
all the furniture she had brought with her when he married her. His children
    received the following:

    1. Orsonus, who immigrated to Quebec, received 5 pounds to be paid 2 years
    after B's death;

    2. Amasa, who remained near his father, received 5 shillings;

    3. Levineah, who married Reuben Mallory, received 2 pounds 11 shillings;

    4. Abel, who was left behind in the States with another family, received 25
    pounds to be paid in cattle and grain three years after B's decease;

    5. Phylanien, who probably also had remained in the States, received 10
    shillings.

At first it seemed possible that Barnabas had at least one other son, since
he left the bulk of his estate (specifically Lot 24, Con 2 in Percy Township
and its livestock) to his grandson Barnabas Brunson (b.1806). The father of
this grandson was not named. Here are some reasons why Barnabas may have
left most his estate to his namesake:

    1. he was Barnabas' namesake;

    2. his uncles were already settled on their own land;

    3. he was the oldest son of Barnabas' oldest son, inheriting the property
    because his father was dead;

    4. he was the oldest son of Barnabas' oldest son Amasa who was already
settled on his own land. In further support of this last reason is the fact
that this grandson Barnabas (1806) named his own son Amasa.

Information I had originally received from Dick Bronson of Spokane,
Washington also included sons William and Amos, but as there was no mention
of either man in Barnabas' will and since William Bronson was still alive
when the will was probated, I doubt that he was Barnabas Brunson's son.
However, he was probably some kind of relation since he received his
Northumberland County property the same day Barnabas did. As to the will's
failure to include Amos as an heir, possibly his name has been confused with
Abel's over time. Amos-Abel may be the same person. In any case, little is
known about any Amos, but much is known about Abel Brunson, who was also
very much alive when the will was probated. Noteworthy is the fact that Abel
named none of his numerous children after either his father Barnabas or his
mother Charity. However, Abel was not raised by his father following his
mother's premature death. He was left in the States when his father
immigrated Upper Canada. Based on the new information provided by this will,
Dick Bronson has written to say that he agrees that William is not Barnabas'
son. However, he still believes that Amos who married Anna Kelsey, was. As
to the paternity of grandson Barnabas (b.1806), he believes him to be
    Amasa's son.

Still hoping to find out more information about Barnabas and especially
Amasa in these early pre-census times, I have checked monument inscriptions
and parish registers available at the Anglican Archives in Toronto. There
are few, if any, early ones for Percy-Seymour Townships in Northumberland
County (formerly known as Newcastle District, Upper Canada). After visiting
the area, it seems likely that Barnabas is buried in in Warkworth Cemetery,
a massive burial ground in Percy Twp., which serves the surrounding farming
    communities.

    Notes for Hannah ???

Hannah is named in her husband's will, which was apparently probated 1822.

Children of Barnabas1 BRUNSON and Charity Huggaboom were as follows:

+ 2 I Amasa2 BRUNSON, born about 1777 in Green River, Columbia, New York,
United States. He married Dorcas ???.

+ 3 ii Orsonus (Orlando)2 BRUNSON, born 5 Mar 1777 in Green River, Columbia,
New York, United States. He married Lucy BAKER.

4 iii Lavinia2 BRUNSON, born about 1780 in Green River, Saratoga, New York,
United States. Father Barnabas left his "daughter Levineah" 2 pounds, 11
shillings to paid one year after his decease. The will was dated 22 Feb
1822. Believed to have remained in Canada with Reuben Mallory.

+ 5 iv Abel2 BRUNSON, born 25 Mar 1786 in Green River, Saratoga, New York,
United States. He married Sally LOVE.

+ 6 v Philander2 BRUNSON, born about 1793 in New York, United States. He
    married Sarah???.

      Generation 2

    2. Amasa2 BRUNSON (Barnabas1), born about 1777 in Green River, Columbia, New
York, United States; died after 1850 in Pennsylvania?, United States. He
married Dorcas ???, born about 1777 in Ontario, Canada.

    Notes for Amasa BRUNSON

Amasa's father Barnabas Brunson left him 5 shillings in a will which was
dated 18 Sep 1820 and probated 16 Feb 1822. There are some early land
records referring to Amasa's property, but although I have checked the
Abstract Index at the Archives of Ontario, there were no further land
transactions recorded for Con 4, Lot 23, which would have established
Amasa's continued presence in Cramahe Twp. This suggests that Amasa either
died young or that he moved again. There is an Amasa who was blind and who
ended up living with his daughter Lois Pier in the States. But it's at this
time that we also find a Dorcas Brunson and her grown daughters still living
in Cramahe Twp. I'm guessing that Dorcas was Amasa's widow, since I know of
no other Brunson in the area who could have been her husband. Amasa's
children are also guesses, but I have not yet included Horace Brunson of
Cornwall, Ontario, although Dick Bronson believes that he is somehow
    connected to Amasa.

    Notes for Dorcas ???

    In 1851, three Brunson women are living together in Cramahe Twp.: Dorcas,76;
Elizabeth; 50 and Dorcas, 42. Although Amasa is blind and apparently living
in Pennsylvania with his daughter Lois' family, these women may be his
    family.

Children of Amasa2 BRUNSON and Dorcas ??? were as follows:

7 I Elizabeth3 BRUNSON, born about 1801 in Ontario, Canada. Assumed to be
Amasa's daughter, since she's living in Cramahe in 1851, although she
    obviously never married.

+ 8 ii Lois E.3 BRUNSON, born 28 Jun 1804 in Ontario?, Canada. She married
    Amon B.PIER.

+ 9 iii Barnabas3 BRUNSON, born about 1806 in Ontario, Canada. He married
    (1) Peggy MASTERS.; married (2) Elizabeth "Betsy" STONE.

10 iv Dorcas3 BRONSON, born about 1809 in Ontario, Canada. Assumed to be
Amasa's daughter, since she's living in Cramahe Twp. Never married?

    3. Orsonus (Orlando)2 BRUNSON (Barnabas1), born 5 Mar 1777 in Green River,
Columbia, New York, United States; died 25 Sep 1849 in Dundee, Huntingdon,
Quebec, Canada; buried in Aubrey Cemetery, Dundee, Huntington, Quebec,
Canada. He married about 1803/14 in Fort Covington, Franklin, New York,
United States, Lucy BAKER, born about 1783 in Cornwall, Stormont, Ontario,
Canada; died 25 Sep 1856 in Deer River, Franklin, New York, United States.

    Notes for Orsonus (Orlando) BRUNSON

Father Barnabas left Orsonus five pounds to be paid two years after his
decease in cattle or grain. This will was probated 16 Feb 1822. I wonder if
Dick Bronson has the correct Orsomus Bronson married to Lucy Baker. In
Proceedings of Town Meeting, Percy Township, 1828, we find about 20 or so
appointments are made, including Jonathan Tripp and "Orsemen" Brunson who
are to be pathmasters and William Stone who is to be a town warden. Orsomus'
children could not have been born in Quebec if he was a pathmaster in Percy
Twp in 1828. However, I have not been able to find any other information
about Orsemus of Percy Twp. and so for the time being, I am relying on
details supplied by Richard "Dick" Bronson of Spokane, Washington.

Dick Bronson obtained some information about the Orsamus (Orlando) Bronson
family from AsOthers See Us, Scots of the Seaway Valley, a book written by
R.J. Fraser in 1959. Fraser makes the usual claim that Orsamus was the first
white settler in Dundee, Quebec. He also tells a chilling tale about Orsamus
betraying, murdering and collecting the bounty on two British Garrison
    deserters.

    Notes for Lucy BAKER

Lucy is the daughter of Benjamin Baker and Abigail Wade, United Empire
Loyalists who settled near Cornwall, Ontario after the American Revolution
and then in Dundee, Quebec abt 1800.

Children of Orsonus (Orlando)2 BRUNSON and Lucy BAKER were as follows:

    + 11 I Horace (Horatio)3 BRUNSON, born 16 Oct 1804 in Dundee, Huntington,
Quebec, Canada. He married Polly RAYMOND.

12 ii Robert Amos Nelson3 BRUNSON, born 3 Mar 1815 in Dundee, Huntingdon,
Quebec, Canada; died about Jan 1816.

+ 13 iii Reuben Sherwood3 BRUNSON, born 3 Mar 1817 in Dundee, Huntingdon,
Quebec, Canada. He married Amanda SCHYER.

14 iv David Orlando3 BRUNSON, born 15 Jun 1820 in Dundee, Huntingdon,
Quebec, Canada; died 23 Jun 1892 in Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska, United
States. Residing in Finch when he married. Married by Rev. Purkis.
Witnesses: Thomas Whyat and Hervy Shaver.

    + 15 v Benjamin Andrew3 BRUNSON, born 3 Feb 1823 in Dundee, Huntingdon,
Quebec, Canada. He married Mary Ann Elizabeth EMPEY.

    5. Abel2 BRUNSON (Barnabas1), born 25 Mar 1786 in Green River, Saratoga, New
York, United States; died 30 Sep 1861 in South Stockton, Chatauqua, New
York, United States; buried in Red Bird Cemetery, Stockton Twp., Chautauqua
Co., New York, United States. He married on 15 Jan 1809 in Connecticut,
United States, Sally LOVE, born 15 Jun 1791 in New York, United States; died
25 Dec 1867 in South Stockton Twp., Chatauqua Co., New York, United States.

    Notes for Abel BRUNSON

Abel's story was chronicled by his granddaughter-in-law, Z. Elizabeth Turner
Brunson in a genealogy entitled History of Abel Brunson and His Family
1786-1903. His pioneering experience is also described in Biographical and
Historical Sketches of the Early Settlers of Ellery and Stockton, by
J.L.Bugbea. Apparently, Abel's mother died when he was 5. When he was 9, he
went to live with the family of Abner Ives. This was around the same time
that Abel's father Barnabas Brunson was immigrating to Canada. There is some
discrepancy about Abel's birth place. According to Dick Bronson's sources,
he was born in New York State. However, the 1860 Census for Stockton, New
York, gives his birth place as Connecticut and Sally's as Rhode Island. Abel
was 74 then; Sally was 68 and children Oliver, age 28 and Sarah J., age 23
were still at home. Also living with Abel was Alanzo, age 17, Lorenzo's son.

Abel had been 22 when he married 17 year old Sally Love in Bridgeport, New
York. Is it possible that the newly weds returned to Connecticut? Elilzabeth
Turner Brunson recorded that two years later, the young couple moved from
"Connecticut" to New York along with their first two children, Horace and
Huldah, and Sally's father John. They arrived in Chautauqua Co. early in
February 181 after a six week sleigh journey. Two cows tied behind the
sleigh had furnished the family with milk and butter; the butter was churned
by the motion of the sleigh. Eventually, Abel purchased 120 acres in the
wilderness where South Stockton now is. Twenty years passed before he made
the final payment on this $300.00 debt.

In 1818 he built a framed house and soon after opened a tavern, which he
kept until about 1838. When his sons Alfred and Oliver grew up, they assumed
the responsibility for the farm. The sawmill that Abel built on Dry Brook
went dry. Father Barnabas left "son Abel" 25 pounds to paid in the three
years after his decease in cattle or grain.

There is a tombstone for Abel and Sally (Love) Brunson and also a photo of
    the couple.

    Notes for Sally LOVE

    Daughter of John Love b. 1769? and Sarah (Dec 5, 1767-May 27, 1842).

Children of Abel2 BRUNSON and Sally LOVE were as follows:

    + 16 I Isaac "Horace"3 BRUNSON, born 22 Sep 1809 in Bridgewater, Oneida Co.,
New York, United States. He married Mary Ann TRAVERS.

    + 17 ii Huldah3 BRUNSON, born 6 Dec 1810 in Bridgewater, Litchfield,
Connecticut, United States. She married (1) LymanWILBUR.; married (2) Calvin
    STORY.

+ 18 iii Lorenzo3 BRUNSON, born 6 Jul 1812 in South Stockton, Chautauqua,
New York, United States. He married (1) LavinaLANGWORTHY.; married (2) Lydia
    AnnLANGWORTHY.

+ 19 iv Cordelia3 BRUNSON, born 29 May 1814 in South Stockton, Chautauqua,
New York, United States. She married WarrenCOE.

    + 20 v Sedgwick3 BRUNSON, born 2 Feb 1816 in South Stockton, Chatauqua, New
York, United States. He married JoannaPHILLIPS.

+ 21 vi George C.3 BRUNSON, born 15 Dec 1818 in South Stockton, Chautauqua
Co., New York, United States. He married Betsey E. WHITTACKER.

22 vii James3 BRUNSON, born 16 Dec 1820 in South Stockton, Chautauqua, New
York, United States; died 11 Aug 1822 in Stockton Twp., Chautauqua, New
    York, United States.

23 viii Ephraim3 BRUNSON, born 22 Feb 1822 in South Stockton, Chautauqua,
New York, United States; died 4 Mar 1823 in Stockton Twp., Chautauqua, New
    York, United States.

+ 24 ix Cynthia3 BRUNSON, born 31 Aug 1824 in South Stockton, Chautauqua,
New York, United States. She married BradfordPHILLIPS.

    + 25 x Alfred Perry3 BRUNSON, born 16 Nov 1828 in South Stockton,
Chautauqua, New York, United States. He married Z. Elizabeth TURNER.

+ 26 xi Oliver Abel3 BRUNSON, born 12 Oct 1831 in South Stockton,
Chautauqua, New York, United States. He married MarrittaLENNOX.

27 xii Sarah Jane3 BRUNSON, born 2 May 1837 in South Stockton, Chautauqua,
New York, United States; died 5 Sep 1867 in Ellery, Chautauqua, New York,
    United States.

    6. Philander2 BRUNSON (Barnabas1), born about 1793 in New York, United
States; died before 1870 in Rochester, Fulton, Indiana, United States. He
married in United States, Sarah???, born about 1810 in Vermont, United
States; died before 1870 in Rochester, Fulton, Indiana, United States.

    Notes for Philander BRUNSON

My original notes stated that Philander's father Barnabas left "Phylanien"
10 shillings in his will, which was probated 16 February 1822 in Percy Twp.,
Newcastle District, Upper Canada. Nothing else was known about Philander,
although other sources had included him as one of Barnabas' sons.

The History of Chautauqua County (NY), Young, 1875, p.556, had listed among
original purchasers of land in Stockton, NY--1817, Philander Brunson, 15
acres, Twp 3, range 12. Since Philander's brother Abel was living in the
same vicinity, we may conclude this was the same man, although recent
evidence indicates he probably moved southward to the area near Pittsburgh,
    PA.

In April 1998, new information about the adult Philander and his family
emerged when his descendant John Scroggins of Conway, Arkansas contacted me
on the Internet. John had obtained some of this information from Indiana and
Arkansas census records. He had also found tombstone inscriptions for some
family members. Apparently, Philander Brunson was pursuing the timber
industry in Arkansas. One of his family is also supposed to have stolen an
(Indian?) girl from Canada, but there is no evidence to support this story.
At this point, it is doubtful if Philander ever spent any time in Canada.
Going by the date his father immigrated to Upper Canada, it is entirely
possible that Philander was left in the care of another New York family,
just like his older brother Abel.

Children of Philander2 BRUNSON and Sarah ??? were as follows:

    + 28 I Philander3 BRUNSON, born about 5 Jun 1832 in Pennsylvania, United
States. He married Nancy Jane BAKER.

    Generation 3

    8. Lois E.3 BRUNSON (Amasa2, Barnabas1), born 28 Jun 1804 in Ontario?,
Canada; died 31 Dec 1859 in Cussewago Twp., Crawford, Pennsylvania, United
States. She married on 29 Dec 1825 in United States, Amon B. PIER, born 19
Apr 1801 in Oxford, Chenango Co., New York, United States; died 2 Jun 1885.

    Notes for Lois E. BRUNSON

According to NY census records, a blind Amasa was living with this daughter
in his old age. Lois is supposed to have been born in Canada, so Dick
Bronson thought she might be a granddaughter of Barnabas Brunson, who
immigrated to Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., ON, CAN. The Thomas Pier
Genealogy Page  records her as the daughter of Amasa Brunson and Sarah
Frost. If this is so, then the above mentioned Dorcas is not likely to be
    Amasa's wife.

    Notes for Amon B. PIER

Amon was the son of Elijah and Eunice (Beebe). Amon's father, Elijah, died
young, so at the age of 13, he moved with both sets of his grandparents to
Busti, Chautauqua Co., NY. The families purchased lots in Harmony and were
soon well off. Amon also married Sarah Gibson, but they had no children.

Children of Lois E.3 BRUNSON and Amon B. PIER were as follows:

30 I Charlista Della4 PIER, born 23 Aug 1827 in New York, United States.

31 ii Cordelia Alwares4 PIER, born 18 Sep 1829 in New York, United States.

32 iii Martha Jane4 PIER, born 21 Jul 1831 in New York, United States.

+ 33 iv Selden Elijah4 PIER, born 21 May 1833 in Chataqua Co., New York,
United States. He married Almira C. HARNED.

34 v Phebe Lucilia4 PIER, born 4 Oct 1835 in New York, United States.

+ 35 vi Sidney Jadiah4 PIER, born 19 Feb 1844 in New York, United States. He
married (1) Emma H. PEER.; married (2) Dorothea BUCKHOLZ.

    9. Barnabas3 BRUNSON (Amasa2, Barnabas1), born about 1806 in Ontario,
Canada; died before 1881 in Burleigh Twp.?, Peterborough Co., Ontario,
Canada. He married (1) Peggy MASTERS, died before 1835. He married (2)
Elizabeth "Betsy" STONE, born about 1814 in United States, daughter of
    William STONE and Catherine TURNER.

    Notes for Barnabas BRUNSON

Barnabas and a man called Diar Brunson both enlisted in the 6th Percy
Company in Northumberland Co. in 1825. Was Diar a brother? Chiefly because
he named his third son "Amasa", Dick Bronson and I have concluded that Amasa
(b.1777 ) was most likely the father of Barnabas (b.1806).

The man who married Elizabeth Stone and Peggy Masters was the second
Barnabas Brunson in Ontario. Like his grandfather, whom he was named after,
he continued to spell his surname "Brunson." Almost nothing is known about
this Barnabas, except that he remained on the Percy Twp. property he had
inherited from his grandfather. The names of his wives and children were
determined through census records for Percy Twp., Northumberland County and
    his children's marriage registers.

    Notes for Peggy MASTERS

Peggy may be Mary Master's sister. She must have died before 1836, since her
step-son Amasa's marriage register records his parents as Barnabas and
Elizabeth. Her name was extrapolated from her son Barnabas' marriage
register when he married for the second time in 1875.

    Notes for Elizabeth "Betsy" STONE

Like the Brunsons, Betsy was also a descendant of one of the original
founders of Hartford, Connecticut, in her case Rev. Samuel Stone. In
addition, her father William Stone (1785-1846) is generally recognized as
the first settler in Burleigh Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario.

Children of Barnabas3 BRUNSON and Peggy MASTERS were as follows:

    + 36 I Barnabas "Barny" or "Berny"4 BRUNSON, born about 1830/37 in
"Crammie", Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada. He married Mary TRIPP.

+ 37 ii William4 BRUNSON, born about 1831/33 in Ontario, Canada. He married
    Ellen ???.

Children of Barnabas3 BRUNSON and Elizabeth "Betsy" STONE were as follows:

    36. Barnabas "Barny" or "Berny"4 BRUNSON (Barnabas3, Amasa2, Barnabas1),
born about 1830/37 in "Crammie", Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada. He
married on 20 Jan 1850 in Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada,
Mary TRIPP, born about 1836 in Percy Twp., Northumberland Co?, Ontario,
Canada; died about 1871 in Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada, daughter
of Jonathan TRIPP and Mary MASTERS.

Notes for Barnabas "Barny" or "Berny" BRUNSON

Although 21 year old Barnabas was already married and living on his own by
the time of the 1851 Census in Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., it seemed
likely that Barney was the son of Barnabas Brunson who also lived in the
same vicinity. However, as his first marriage register failed to provide any
information about his parents, this was difficult to establish until his
second marriage register was found in 1875.

A transcription of Barny's first marriage register at least places him in
Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario: Barnabas Brunson and Mary Tripp
both of Percy were married by Epis. meth. min Rev. David Nickerson 20 Jan
1851. Their marriage witnesses were Hiram and Catherine Tripp. Shortly after
their marriage, Barny (age 22) and Mary (age 17) Brunson appeared in the
1851 Canada West Census for Percy Twp. They were living at Con 4, Lot 13
with their son John (age 2) and four "orphan" Tripps (ages 3-17). Given
their approximate birth dates, and the fact that my 3x great grandparents'
first child was named John, this Barny (1830) and Mary (1836) of Percy Twp.,
appeared to be the same couple who turned up Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co. during
    the early 1870s.

Barney Brunson (1830) and Mary (1836) are documented as farming on
Concession 6, Lot 11 (100 acres) in Tiny Twp., near Wyevale, Ontario between
the years 1866 and 1873. Barny Brunson "sightings" in Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co.
    occurred in the following sources:

    1. Township Papers. (MS-658, Reel #476, p.585 at Archives of Ontario,
Toronto, Canada) This affidavit is regarding Con 6, Lot 12 where daughter
Annie's future in-laws dwelled: To wit: "Barney Brunson personally proved
before me one of her Majesty's Trustees of this place...Farmers say they
have been upon Lot 12, Con 6 ...and found three acres chopped and a dwelling
house erected thereon and that the said improvements were made by Charles
Dwinnell (Barney Brunson's name has been crossed out at this point) who now
resides on that lot...respondents say there are no other improvements than
those made by the the said Charles Dwinnell." Barney Brunson apparently
signed this document in Wyebridge, Ont. on 6 Mar. 1866.

    2. Simcoe County Directory 1866/67. Farmers-Tiny Township. p.241 (available
at Mississauga Public Library, Ontario): "Brunson, Bernand Con 6, Lot 11 h.

available in Ontario public libraries.) In this directory, Barney Brunson
again appeared on Con 6, Lot 11.

Two deeds for Conc. 6, Lot 11 in the Abstract Index for Tiny Twp., Simcoe
Co., refer to Barny Brunson either as an "unmarried yeoman" or as a widower.
Instrument #64809 for this lot is a Mortgage dated 9 Jan 1872 and instrument
#76717 is a Bargain and Sale dated 1874. Although no death register has been
located for Barny's wife Mary Tripp, it is possible to conclude from the
date of the Mortgage instrument, that she died during the second half of
1871, since she was still alive at the time of the census. It is also
possible to conclude from the date of the Bargain and Sale instrument that
Barny left Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co. in 1874, probably for St.Vincent's, Grey
Co. since that is where he was supposed to be residing when married Hannah
    Black in 1875.

    Notes for Mary TRIPP

Mary was living with her husband Barney and their first child Johnathan in
Percy Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario during the 1851 Census, as were a
number of otherTripp relations. John, Cott(Pat?), Irilla and Emma Tripp were
also either living in Mary's household or very close by, but her exact
relationship to these youngsters is unclear. If these young people are
Mary's brothers and sisters, she must be the daughter of Jabez and Mary
(Haley) Tripp. However, the fact that she named her two older children,
Jonathan and Mary Catherine, suggests to me that she might have been the
daughter of Jonathan and Catherine (Masters) Tripp. Additonally, her
marriage to Barnabas Brunson was witnessed by Hiram and Catherine Tripp, who
were also the children of Jonathan and Catherine Tripp. Mary and Barny
eventually left Percy Twp. for the area around Wyevale in Simcoe Co.,
Ontario. When the census was taken during 1871, one of Mary's neighbours in
Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co. was Charles Tripp, who was either her brother or her
first cousin and who had also relocated from Percy Twp. Mary may have
already been dying when the 1871 Census was taken, possibly of the
tuberculosis which seems to have plagued the families from Percy Twp. Her
husband Barney was described as a widower in Tiny Twp. land transactions
post 1871, although no death certificate or tombstone inscription has been
    found for Mary.

Children of Barnabas "Barny" or "Berny"4 BRUNSON and Mary TRIPP were as
    follows:

+ 128 i Johnathan J.?5 BRUNSON, born Dec 1850 in Wyevale, Tiny Twp., Simcoe
Co., Ontario, Canada. He married Christina???.

    married John Charles DWINNELL.

132 v Erletty5 BRUNSON, born about 1860 in Ontario, Canada. According to the
1871Canada Census for Tiny Twp. in Simcoe Co., Ontario (p.32), 11 year old
Erletty and her 4 year old sister Emma appear to be staying with their older
sister in the Brock household next door to the Brunson home, possibly
because their mother was already ailing.

+ 133 vi Emma Louise5 BRUNSON, born 11 Apr 1866 in Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co.,
Ontario, Canada. She married James S. MCINTYRE.

    37. William4 BRUNSON (Barnabas3, Amasa2, Barnabas1), born about 1831/33 in
Ontario, Canada. He married Ellen ???, born about 1832 in Ontario, Canada.

    Notes for William BRUNSON

    William and Ellen Brunson and their four children: James, 11; Wm, 9;
Elizabeth, 6 and Ellen, 3 follow Amasa and Francis Brunson in the 1871
Canada Census for Burleigh Twp. etc in Peterborough Co. (p.24). They lived
on Con 7, Lot 9 and had lost a one month old male child the previous year.

    38. James Clark4 BRUNSON (Barnabas3, Amasa2, Barnabas1), born about 1836 in
Ontario, Canada. He married Mary "Minnie" HILL, born about 1850.

    Notes for James Clark BRUNSON

James may have married a Mary, but if he did so, he converted to
Catholicism. During the 1871 Census for Harvey Twp. in Peterborough Co
(p.32), 36 yr old James Brunson, a labourer, is living with his 21 yr old
wife Mary and his one year old daughter, also called Mary.

Children of James Clark4 BRUNSON and Mary "Minnie" HILL were as follows:

    139 i Mary5 BRONSON, born about 1870.

+ 140 ii George Albert5 BRONSON, born 1872 in Ontario, Canada. He married
    Mary BerthaKOHLER.

Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada; died 17 Dec 1902 in Burleigh
Twp., Peterborough Co., Ontario, Canada. He married on 25 Feb 1862 in
Seymour Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada, FrancesTHORELTON, born
    about 1840 in Canada.

    Notes for Amasa BRUNSON

Surname spelled "Brownson" on marriage register. He is identified as the son
of Barnabas and Elizabeth. Widowed by 1901.

    Notes for Frances THORELTON

Frances was 22 yr old resident of Seymour Twp. when she married Amasa. She
was the daughter of Moses and Catherine.

Children of Amasa4 BRUNSON and Frances THORELTON were as follows:

144 i Catherine E.5 BRONSON, born about 1864 in Peterborough Co?, Ontario,
    Canada.

+ 145 ii Clarke5 BRONSON, born 27 Aug 1865 in Peterborough Co?, Ontario,
    Canada. He married Mary ???.

+ 146 iii Harrison Henry William5 BRONSON, born 14 Nov 1867 in Peterborough
Co?, Ontario, Canada. He married Amy S. ???.

147 iv Francis Abigail5 BRONSON, born about May 1870 in Peterborough Co.,
    Ontario, Canada.

    + 148 v Ephraim John5 BRONSON, born 10 Mar 1880 in Ontario, Canada. He
    married Margaret LEAN.

    42. Giles Warren4 BRUNSON (Barnabas3, Amasa2, Barnabas1), born 1843/55 in
Ontario, Canada; died 10 May 1927 in Kitson Co., Minnesota, United States.
He married Margaret "Maggie" BOND, born about 11 Feb 1851 in Hillsburg,
Wellington Co., Ontario, Canada; died 17 Jun 1945 in Kitson Co., Minnesota,
    United States.

    Notes for Giles Warren BRUNSON

There is some discrepancy about Giles' place of birth. Richard "Dick"
Bronson of Spokane, Washington informs me that Giles was born 27 Sep 1841 in
Pittsburg, Allegheny, PA, although census records indicate that he and his
siblings were all born in Ontario, Canada. On the other hand, the 1878
Illustrated Historical Atlas of the Counties of Northumberland and Durham,
Ontario gives Giles' birth place as the States and his immigration date as
1831! During the 1881 Seymour Twp. Census, Giles, age 38, appears to be
living with his wife Margaret, his mother Elizabeth and three children: Etta
May, 7, Ernest, 6 and Edith, 3, but the family surname is almost impossible
to decipher. If this record has been interpreted correctly, indications are
that he occupied the Seymour Twp. property in Northumberland Co., Ontario
into the 1880s. I failed to find any reference to Bronsons/Brunsons in the
1891 census for the area; possibly this was an oversight on my part and
relevant records for Percy and Seymour Twp. should really be doublechecked.

Meanwhile, Lola Ellen Wilkinson ([email protected]) has
identified her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth "Lizzy" as the daughter of Mr
and Mrs Giles B. Bronson. According to her, the Giles Bronson family lived
in the northwestern part of Minnesota. She even has a photocopy of Giles'
tombstone which reads 1842-1927. She has not provided any indication as to
how long these Bronsons were living in Minnesota, but they could easily have
immigrated there in the 1880s. Another descendant, Mrs Leo Anderson, wrote
ReunionPamphlet, Bronson and Lindstrom Families, June 29 and 30, 1991. Her
account provides the strongest evidence that Giles left Seymour Twp.,
Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada about 1882 for Kitson Co., Minnesota.
She maintains that Giles' son Ephraim Ernest was 7 when this event occurred.
Ephraim was Mrs Leo Anderson's father, so we can assume that thisr
information is probably accurate. Ephraim's family included his sisters
Elizabeth and Effie, but Effie died soon afterwards.

Giles Bronson and his family lived in a log cabin, before building a larger
house. There were Chippewa Indians not too far from the house, but they
posed few problems. A written source, MN Geographic Names (1920) which was
evidently reprinted in 1969 by the Minnesota Historical Society indicates
that Bronson, a railway village in Kitson Co. was named for Giles Bronson,
an early farmer in Sec 32 of the township, who was well-known for
entertaining sportsmen at his home. The town later renamed Lake Bronson
after the creation of that body of water by Bronson Dam across South Fork,
Two River. (p.277) One small note of caution, I can find no indication that
the above named granddaughter Elizabeth "Lizzy" (born 1877) was included in
the 1881 Seymour Twp. Census, unless she is actually Edith who was born
about 1878; Effie and Etta may also be the same person.

Children of Giles Warren4 BRUNSON and Margaret "Maggie" BOND were as
    follows:

149 i Etta "Effie?" May5 BRONSON, born about 1874 in Seymour Twp.,
Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada; died about 1883 in Kitson Co.,
    Minnesota, United States.

+ 150 ii Ephraim Ernest5 BRONSON, born 11 Feb 1875 in Campbellford, Seymour
Twp., Northumberland Co., Ontario, Canada. He married Eleanora "Nora"
    Elizabeth LINDSTROM.

    + 151 iii Elizabeth "Lizzy"5 BRONSON, born 1877. She married (1) Thomas
    KINSHELLA.; married (2) Charles MALTAIS.

152 iv Edith5 BRONSON, born about 1878 in Seymour Twp., Northumberland Co.,
Ontario, Canada. Elizabeth and Edith may be the same person; the name was
difficult to decipher in the 1881 Seymour Twp. Census.

    43. Harrison H.4 BRUNSON (Barnabas3, Amasa2, Barnabas1), born about 1847/51
in Seymour Twp., Ontario, Canada; died about 1917; buried in Parma Union
Cemetery, New York, United States. He married on 10 Apr 1873 in Percy Twp.,
Ontario, Canada, M. Esther BRICKMAN, born about 1849 in Percy Twp., Ontario,
    Canada; died about 1923.

    Notes for Harrison H. BRUNSON

Listed by initials only on his marriage register: "H.H." when he married at
the age of 26. He was recorded as the son of Barnabas and Elizabeth. One of
his witnesses was J.A. Bronson of Seymour, presumably his brother James.
According to Harrison's descendant, Leland Masters, the Harrison Bronson
family re-settled in the Rochester, New York area.

    Notes for M. Esther BRICKMAN

Or Buckman? Esther, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth, was a resident of Percy
    Twp.

Children of Harrison H.4 BRUNSON and M. Esther BRICKMAN were as follows:

153 i Nellie5 BRONSON, born in Ontario, Canada.

+ 155 iii Charlotte May5 BRONSON, born 8 Sep 1873 in Ontario, Canada. She
    married William BOUND.

    Grace UNGER.

    married Ernest E. MASTERS.

1968; buried in Parma Union Cemetery, Monroe Co., New York, United States.

    Eugenie G. SMITH.

    44. Julia4 BRUNSON (Barnabas3, Amasa2, Barnabas1), born 5 Apr 1851 in
Ontario, Canada; died about 1922; buried in Campbellford United Cemetery,
Ontario, Canada. She married Robert O. BERTRAND, born 1 Mar 1851 in Ontario,
    Canada; died about 1926.

    Notes for Julia BRUNSON

Julia was born 1851 according to her tombstone, which we visited May 1997.
She is buried with her husband and Ida and Eva. Ida's husband is identified
as Fred Bennett. Julia claimed to be of Irish extraction in the 1901 Census,
but nothing in her background suggests that this was true.

    Notes for Robert O. BERTRAND

The Bertrands were living kitty corner to the Brunson homestead in 1878.
(Con 4, Lot 3, now Seymour Twp.) The family was French in origin. Robert was
probably a brother of Joseph and Catherine. Bertrand who also appear in the
    1881 Seymour Twp. Census (No.1, p.7).

Children of Julia4 BRUNSON and Robert O. BERTRAND were as follows:

160 i James5 BERTRAND, born 8 Jun 1871 in Seymour Twp., Northumberland Co.,
Ontario, Canada. Assumed to be Robert and Julia's son since he is living
close to them during the 1901 Census.

Co., Ontario, Canada. Unmarried in 1901.

    128. Johnathan J.?5 BRUNSON (Barnabas "Barny" or "Berny"4, Barnabas3,
Amasa2, Barnabas1), born Dec 1850 in Wyevale, Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co.,
Ontario, Canada; died 23 Feb 1885; buried in St.John's Ang., Waverley,
Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. He married Christina ??? born about 1857,
    Ontario, Canada.

    Notes for Johnathan J.? BRUNSON

In the 1871 Ontario Census for Tiny Twp., Simcoe County on p.32, John is
listed as a 20 year old living in his parents' home. I failed to to find his
name in 1881 Census for this area, but Dick Bronson has located a Canadian
born couple, Johnathan J., age 29 and Christina Bronson, age 23, along with
their 7 mth. old son, Johnathan, in the 1880 United States Census for
Cheboygan City in Benton Twp., Michigan. Judging by the date his daughter
died, Jonathan went to Michigan in 1879, but he must have returned home by
1883 in order to die himself. His tombstone is located in St. John's
Anglican Cemetery in Waverley, Ontario: "J.J.(initials only) Brunson died 22
Feb. 1885 aged 34 years 3 months." In the same cemetery is a tombstone
inscribed "Brunson, Mary Catherine, daughter of Brunson, Johnathan and
    Christina died 23 Dec. 1878, aged ?"

Johnathan is listed as 24 on death register, 34 on tombstone. Although his
death register gave his birthplace as Wyevale, 2 yr old "John" was living
with Barnabas and Mary Brunson in Percy Twp. At the time of the 1851 Census.
    CAUSE OF DEATH:Consumption

    Notes for Christina ???

Christina's name was taken from the tombstone inscription for her daughter
Mary Catherine and later confirmed in the 1880 Michigan Census. I am
guessing that Christina may be a Roebuck, given that Jonathan's younger
brother Allen's sister-in-law was Christianne Roebuck born about 1857. If
this is the case, Christina would be the daughter of Martin and Christianne
Roebuck, formerly of Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario.

Children of Johnathan J.?5 BRUNSON and Christina ??? were as follows:

    264 i Mary Catherine6 BRONSON, born in Ontario, Canada; died 23 Dec 1878;
buried in St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Waverley, Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co.,
    Ontario, Canada.

265 ii Jonathan6 BRONSON, born about 1879 in Ontario, Canada.

    129. Mary Catherine5 BRUNSON (Barnabas "Barny" or "Berny"4, Barnabas3,
Amasa2, Barnabas1), born 25 Jun 1854 in Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada; died
1939; buried in Wyevale Cemetary, Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada.
She married on 20 Jul 1870 in Medonte Twp., Ontario, Canada, James H. BROCK,
    born 8 Sep 1844; died about 1925.

Notes for Mary Catherine BRUNSON and James H. BROCK

Birth/death dates originally obtained during 1994 visit to Wyevale Cemetery.
Mary C. Brunson (1854-1939) is buried with her sister Emma Brunson and their
husbands James H. Brock (1844?-?) and his son Isaac Brock (1871-1934.) Also
buried with them are are Mary's and James' daughter and son-in-law, Ruth
Brock (1887- 1979) and Norman H. Hodgins (1882-1944). Mary, who would have
been 17 in the 1871 Census for Tiny Township, was not listed in her parents'
household, although Emma was near by. Her exact birth date was obtained from
1901 Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario Census. (Div.4, p. 4, line 10 James Brock
    household).

James, a farmer and laborer, was born 8 Sept 1844, his son Isaac, a basket
maker, was born 5 Aug 1871, a daughter Faez? was born 7 Jan 1881, a son
    James W. was born 25 ? 1884, a daughter Ruth C. was born 5 Nov 1886 and a
son, Milton W. was born 24 Mar. 1889. They were living on John St. in
    Wyevale.

Children of Mary Catherine5 BRUNSON and James H. BROCK were as follows:

    266 i Isaac6 BROCK, born about 1871 in Ontario, Canada; died about 1934;
buried in Wyevale Union Cem., Con 4, Lot13, Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario,
Canada. Living with father and stepmother Mary C. Brunson at time of 1901
    Tay Twp.Census. At least, I assume she's his stepmother, since there's a 10
yr gap between him and the next child in the family.

267 ii Faez?6 BROCK, born 7 Jan 1881 in Ontario, Canada.

268 iii James W.6 BROCK, born 1884 in Ontario, Canada.

269 iv Ruth C.6 BROCK, born 5 Nov 1886 in Ontario, Canada; died 1979; buried
in Wyevale Union, Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. Tombstone
inscription her birth date as 1887.

    270 v Milton W.6 BROCK, born 24 Mar 1889 in Ontario, Canada.

    130. Allen Albert5 BRUNSON (Barnabas "Barny" or "Berny"4, Barnabas3, Amasa2,
Barnabas1), born 21 May 1856 in Wyevale, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died
29 Mar 1934 in near Laredo, Montana, United States. He married on 12 Sep
1878 in St. Ignatius, Catherine ROEBUCK, born 16 Mar 1862 in Wyevale,
Ontario, Canada; died 21 Jul 1953 in Havre, Montana, United States.

    Notes for Allen Albert BRUNSON

I had also found a 14 year old Allan "Brunston" living in Tripp household in
Flos Twp. during the 1871 Census, but nothing further information about
either Allan. What became of the two Allans was anybody's guess until
February 2000 when descendant Bill Bronson contacted me..

Allen had evidently immigrated to Montana. His death certificate identified
him as the son of "Barny Baird Bronson and Mary Tripp" and indicated that he
had been born in Wyevale, Simcoe Co., Ontario. Bill says that Allen spent a
couple of years in Sault St. Marie, Michigan where he ran a livery stable.
My records indicate that some of Allen's relatives had also immigrated to
Michigan, including his brother Jonathan and his Uncle Charles Tripp.

Allen went to Montana sometime between 1888 and 1890, arriving first in
Great Falls, which was still a new city. Allen was eventually attracted to
the new mining community of Neihart, Montana, approximately 60 miles south
of Great Falls in the Little Belt Mountains. He obtained the contract to
haul silver and other ores from the nearby mines to the railroad for
delivery to smelters in Great Falls and elsewhere. He moved away from
Neihart in 1917, to live on a homestead secured by his son Earl near the
farming community of Laredo, a few miles southwest of Havre. He ranched on
this homestead until he died of complications due to a heart attack.

According to Bill Bronson's grandfather, Allen was a large man, well over
six feet and quite broad shouldered. For further details, Allen's descendant
Bill Bronson of Montana may be contacted at [email protected]

    Notes for Catherine ROEBUCK

Catherine also came from Wyevale, Ontario. She was the daughter of Martin
and Christianne/Christina. It is not known when she left for Michigan, or
where exactly St. Ignatius is. Her marriage register remains to be found. My
impression from Bill Bronson is that Catherine was a small, but very
determined woman, with much foresight. RELIGION: Meth.

Children of Allen Albert5 BRUNSON and Catherine ROEBUCK were as follows:

+ 271 i Emma E.6 BRONSON, born in Montana?, United States. She married
    Thomas J. TROY.

    States. He married Phyllis SMITH.

274 iv Mayme6 BRONSON, born 17 Nov 1892 in Montana, United States. Mayme and
Frank lived in Oregon and California. According to Bill Bronson, they had

    131. Ann "Annie" Eliza5 BRUNSON (Barnabas "Barny" or "Berny"4, Barnabas3,
Amasa2, Barnabas1), born about 1858 in Ontario, Canada; died 1895; buried in
French's Meth., Waverley, Flos Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. She
married about 1874, John Charles DWINNELL, born in Con 2, Lot 95, Tiny Twp.,
Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 27 Sep 1916 in Midland, Tiny Twp., Simcoe
Co., Ontario, Canada, son of Charles DWINNELL and Eliza Ann HILL.

Notes for Ann "Annie" Eliza BRUNSON

Annie was first found in the 1871 Ontario Census for Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co.,
p.32. She was recorded as age 13, which corresponds with the death date on
her small tombstone. She is buried with her sons: "Annie Bronson (sic)
1858-1895/ Wife of John Dwinnell/Their sons Charles 1881-1904/Barney
1874-1904." Annie Brunson's granddaughter (my grandmother) first told me
about her premature death, possibly because it set in motion a number of key
events, including the marriage of her 14 year old daughter. A search of the
OntarioVital Statistics available at the Archives of Ontario has failed to
locate any death register for Annie. I wonder if she died of TB like her
sons, but I also note that she died at the same age as her own mother.

    Notes for John Charles DWINNELL

John's birth date (Jan 1, 1850) was originally based on descendent Merna E.
Nelson's notes. Date approximates age provided in 1861 Tiny Twp. Census when
John first appears with his birth family. However, the 1901 Flos Twp. Census
suggests that his birth date was actually August 7, 1850. This was also the
date given on his death register, which was incorrectly indexed under the
surname Dwrnnell: "John Charles Dwinnell, 66 years, 1 month, 20 days died
Sept. 27, 1916 in Midland of auaevia? (anaemia?) after a one year year
illness, attended by Dr.W. McGill. He was the son of Chas Dwinnell and Eliza
Hill and the death was reported by Mrs John Dwinnell in Midland on the
    28th." (MS 935, Reel 225, #030300.)

John had at least six children with Annie Brunson before she died in 1895.
He sunsequently married Edith Miller, nee Cook, a Quebec born widow who was
the daughter of Olive and Leonard on 6 Jan 1897 in Midland, Ontario.
(Ontario Vital Statistics. Marriages MS 932, Reel #90, #011918.) Edith
already had an unspecified number of children from her first marriate and
together they had at least one daughter, Leah died in her teens.

Prior to his retirement in Midland, Ontario around 1900, John had spent his
adult years on at least two different properties. The following directories
for Simcoe Co. chart his residences (also available are Township Papers for
    these lots):

    1. Gazetteer...Simcoe Co...1872-73. Listings for Tiny Twp. show John
Dwinnell living on Con 5, Lot 10. This is confirmed in the Township Deeds
pertaining to this lot. Instrument #59044 indicates that Charles gave his
son John 25 acres of the east 1/2 of the west 1/2 of the north 1/2 of Lot 10
on the 12 Nov 1870 "in consideration of mutual love and affection for $1,"
although Charles and his wife Eliza apparently retained the right to live on
    this lot.

    2. Dufferin, Simcoe Counties and District of Muskoka Directory 1886/87.
Listings under Tiny Twp. show John Dwindle (sic) living on Con 4, Lot 11
with a Wyevale Post Office address. (I have not yet checked relevant
    Township Papers.)

    3. Haliburton, Peterborough, Simcoe and Victoria County Directory 1893.
Listings under Flos Twp. show John Dwinell (sic) now living on Con 1, Lot 71
with a Waverley Post Office address. This is verified in the Township Papers
for this lot. John Dwinnell of Flos (sic) bought the W 1/2 of this property
from Frances E. Shaw April 13, 1893 for $900. John sold 20 acres of the
north east corner of this lot to one Edith M. Miller of Flos, the wife of
William M. Miller on Nov 12, 1895 for $100. (His wife Annie Brunson's
tombstone inscription indicates that this is the same year she died.) After
arranging various mortgages and selling part of this property to Harriet
Bumstead in 1902, John and his current wife, Edith Miller, sold the east 40
acres of this lot to Christina Usher. A similar, but separate record of
these transactions pertains to the north 1/2 of this property.

A small, buried cornerstone inscribed "DWINNELL" is all that marks the grave
of John and his teenage daughter Leah. His wife, Edith Cook, may be buried
    kitty corner to his grave.

Children of Ann "Annie" Eliza5 BRUNSON and John Charles DWINNELL were as
    follows:

277 i Barnabas6 DWINNELL, born 27 Mar 1875 in Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co.,
Ontario, Canada; died 29 Nov 1904 in Con 1, Lot 70, Flos Twp., Simcoe Co.,
Ontario, Canada; buried in French's Meth. Cem., Waverley, Flos Twp., Simcoe
Co., Ontario, Canada. Buried with his brother John Charles who also died
from T.B. in 1904 and their mother who died some years earlier. Barney died
after a 4 year illness. Two different birth dates are provided for Barney on
his death register and in the 1901 Tiny Twp. CAUSE OF DEATH: Phothisis (i.e.
    tuberculosis).

+ 278 ii Arletta6 DWINNELL, born 12 Apr 1877 in Wyevale, Tiny Twp., Simcoe
Co., Ontario, Canada. She married R. Samuel WRIGHT.

Johanna Albertha French. a married woman residing in Orillia Twp., who died
Dec. 7 1907 is listed in Index to Probate and Surrogate Records... Is this
the same woman? Or did this girl die young? Parents' names in baptismal
record appear to be "Jos (sic) and Ann Dwindle of Tiny."

280 iv Charles John6 DWINNELL, born 14 Jan 1881 in Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co.,
Ontario, Canada; died 27 May 1904 in Con 1, Lot 70, Flos Twp., Simcoe Co.,
Ontario, Canada; buried in French's Meth. Cem., Waverley, Flos Twp., Simcoe
Co., Ontario, Canada. His father, John Sr, owned Lot 71 next door at the
time of his son's death. Charles died of pulmonary TB the same year as
brother Barney after an illness of four months.

    + 281 v Emma Catherine6 DWINNELL, born 30 Aug 1885 in Wyevale, Tiny Twp.,
Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. My great-grandmother married James William
    WRIGHT.

282 vi Jasper Allan6 DWINNELL, born 16 Aug 1893 in Elmvale, Flos Twp.,
Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 10 Dec 1974; buried in French's Meth.
Cem., Waverley, Flos Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. "J.A. Dwinnell's"
tombstone inscription records his date of birth as 1894, as do his
Attestation Papers. However, the 1901 Census says 1893. Jasper, who was
probably legally blind, received his first pair of spectacles in the Navy.
Although he got a medical discharge from overseas duty 11 Nov 1918, he was
deemed fit for general service. His Attestation Papers also indicate that
his wife's name was Mabel, but in view of the fact that Ontario birth
registers are only generally available unti1 1903, I have been unable to
    trace his children.

    133. Emma Louise5 BRUNSON (Barnabas "Barny" or "Berny"4, Barnabas3, Amasa2,

14 Feb 1935; buried in Wyevale Cemetery, Ontario , Canada. She married on 15
Dec 1885 in Wyevale, Ontario, Canada, James S. MCINTYRE, born 25 Jul 1859 in
    Edgar, Ontario, Canada.

    Notes for Emma Louise BRUNSON

See also notes for Emma's sister Erletty Brunson. Emma's birthday was
confirmed in 1901 Tay Twp. Census for Simcoe Co., Ontario (No.3, p.3, line
    1) Emma L., 34, with an "Irish" background is living with her spouse James
    S. McIntyre and their children. The McIntyres were Methodists. They lived on
50 acres on B W 1/2 Lot 18, Con 2 of Tay Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario.

Here is a transcription of the McIntyre-Brunson wedding register: ""James S.
McIntyre, aged 29, a cabinet maker in Minesing who was born Edgar, Ontario,
son/of? married Emma Brunson, 19 from Tiny, who was born in Tiny and was the
daughter of Barnabus and Mary Brunson, on 15 Dec. 1885 in Wyevale, Ontario.
Both were Methodists. The bride and groom were married by S. Ling? and their
marriage witnessed by Robert Parnell and Emma Jones who were also from
Tiny." (Ontario Marriages, MS 932, Reel #55, #010628).

Descendant Mike Sainsbury of British Columbia, Canada says that Emma
operated a rooming house in Niagara Falls, NY, but I have no idea when.
Although I have not seen her death register, her father's name has
apparently been erroneously recorded as "John Brunson."

referred to as "Ernest" in the 1881 Seymour Twp. Census. He is believed to
have left Canada at the age of 7 with his parents and his sisters Elizabeth?
and Effie?. They moved to Kittson Co., Minnesota where they first lived in a
log house. "At the approach of night, there were weird cries of timber
wolves, when steel gray skies suddenly turned to velvet, pierced here and

moose making their way through the brush." Ephraim's family had the first

    Notes for Earl James BRONSON

Earl and Mayme were twins, so small at birth that the doctor was able to
place them in a small box and put the box on top of an old iron stove to
keep them warm. Earl and Mayme were entrusted to the care of their older
sister Emma after 1909, so they could finish their educations and Earl could
avoid the mines. Earl's life was largely taken up in public service. He was
an elected public official in Hill Co., Montana for over 40 years, serving
as county auditor for two years and then clerk and recorder for 38 years. In
addition, he served as secretary of the local county fair board for many
years, and was also the equivalent of a modern day Chamber of Commerce
executive, working to promote business activities and social events in the
county. Earl was much interested in local history, and authored a number of
short articles about Havre and surrounding parts. Some of his papers are now
with the Montana Historical Society in the state capital, Helena. (Source:

Force during WWII. He was employed in various occupations after the war,
including being a fireman, a security guard and a railroad warehouseman.

Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 1961; buried in Waverley, French's
Meth., Flos Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. She married on 22 Aug 1895 in
Hillsdale, Ontario, Canada, R. Samuel WRIGHT, born 15 Feb 1875 in Con 2, Lot
15 Wyebridge, Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 1956, son of John
    WRIGHT and Dianah LEONARD.

    Notes for Arletta DWINNELL

Like her sister Emma, Arletta appears to have married the same year her
mother died, although neither of the girls' marriage registers records that
    their mother is already deceased.

    Notes for R. Samuel WRIGHT

Sam appears only once in the 1881 Tiny Twp. Census with the Wright-Leonard
family at the age of six. His birth year has been estimated from this
record, his marriage certificate and his tombstone inscription.

Here is a transcription of his marriage register: "Samuel Wright, 21, a
laborer, residing in Elmvale and born in Wyebridge, son of James and Diana
Wright, married Annie Dwinnel, 19, residing in Flos Township and born in
Wyevale, daughter of John and Annie Dwinnel Aug.22, 1895 in Hillsdale. Both
were Methodists. Witnesses: Alex Dwinnel and Agie Trip, both of Flos."
    (Ontario Marriage Registers, MS 932 #87, #011089).

Sam probably worked in the local sawmills. He was living in Elmvale by 1932.
Initial "R" appeared in his name on his daughter Lucy's birth register.

Fred Wright listed his exact death date as May 18, 1955. His tombstone
inscription reads "Wright, Samuel 1874-1956, beloved husband of Dwinnel,
    Annie 1877-1961."

Children of Arletta6 DWINNELL and R. Samuel WRIGHT were as follows:

+ 401 i Bertha May7 WRIGHT, born 18 May 1898 in Flos Twp., Simcoe Co.,
    Ontario, Canada. She married AlexanderLONGHURST.

+ 402 ii Hazel Lucy7 WRIGHT, born 30 Aug 1899 in Flos Twp., Simcoe Co.,
Ontario, Canada. She married Joseph QUINN.

    281. Emma Catherine6 DWINNELL (Ann "Annie" Eliza5 BRUNSON, Barnabas "Barny"
    or "Berny"4, Barnabas3, Amasa2, Barnabas1), born 30 Aug 1885 in Wyevale,
Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 15 Jul 1966; buried in French's
Meth., Waverley, Flos Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. She married after
1912 in Elmvale, Flos Twp., Simcoe Co., Ont., Canada, James WilliamWRIGHT,
born 4 Jun 1862 in Wyebridge, Tiny Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada; died 3
Sep 1941, son of John WRIGHT and Dianah LEONARD.

    Notes for Emma Catherine DWINNELL

The birth year inscribed on Emma's tombstone was later validated in the 1891
Flos Twp. Census for . when she was reported as six. Her birth date was a
bit of a mystery, since my grandmother told me that Emma had been born in
1883, possibly to hide the fact that she had married so young. Emma herself
claimed to be 18 when she married in 1900, although she was still 18 a year
later when the 1901 FlosTwp. Census was taken. A series of family tragedies
and her father's re-marriage may have disrupted her childhood, as well as
her sense of the passage of time, and in any case, like so many of the
Ontario born Dwinnells, she was illiterate.

My daughters have asked me why Emma married a man so much older than
herself, but I have no idea, other than thatn she must have looked forward
to running her own home. "Wright, James, 30, a labourer, residing in the
Township of Tay, born in Wyebridge, son of John Wright and Diana Lennard
(sic) married Emma Dwindle, 18, residing in the Township of Flos, and born
in Wyevale, daughter of John Dwindle and Ann Blunsen (sic) by licence on May
28, 1900 in Elmvale in a marriage performed by Rev. W. McLean and witnessed
by Grace McLean and Miss S. Smith of Elmvale. For the first and only time,
both were recorded as Episcopalians." (Ontario Marriage Registers, Reel 102,
    #14918.)

Emma's marriage to James Wright was over before she was 25. She had borne
seven children by then, but her childbearing days were over. Some say that
her husband Jim was abusive and some of his children bore a grudge towards
    him after he left them.

Emma's death date was verified in 1994 cemetery visit. She is buried is
buried as the wife Herbert M. Johnston (1891-1959). There is some doubt if
she legally married him, however. My great-grandmother was supposed to
"comical" and easy-going. I met her once at funeral after she was quite old
and had gained a lot of weight. She lived in the Honey Harbour area where
she also reared her son Norm's daughter Marion, who was also unschooled and
possibly mentally handicapped. After Emma died, Marion went to live with
Emma's youngest daughter May. CAUSE OF DEATH: Old age.

Notes for James "Jim" William WRIGHT

Jim's birth date was estimated from Census records, not an easy task since
her first name changed from record to record. The 1871 Tiny Twp. Census
(p.30), lists the oldest child of John and Diana under the name William and
gives his age 9, suggesting he may have been born in 1861 or 1862. The 1881
TinyTwp. Census, p.51 records the records the oldest Wright child under the
name of James, and gives his age as 18, suggesting he may have been born in
1862 or 1863. I note his parents were married June 1861. Where was James in
1891? He may have been working in another lumber mill outside of Simcoe Co.,
since re-appears in the 1901 Flos Twp. Census, claiming to be 30, the same
age he was supposed to be in 1900 when he married her.

The Wrights are rumoured to hav separated because James was physically
abusive. However, James left Emma. They had been living in Flos Twp. where
he was listed as a (sawmill) labourer in the 1901Census. Around 1903, they
may have moved to Elmvale, where my grandmother apparently acquired her
    grade 3 education.

His death date also remains an approximation, taken from newspaper
publication dates for two obituaries, probably from a Midland newspaper,
which were stored in the James-Scarrow family Bible. Although he may not
have done very well by his children, James is fondly remembered by some of
his grandchildren, especially Doris Merkly, whom he called Porky when he was
helping out at her childhood home during the Great Depression. Like the rest
of his family, Jim seemed to have a prediclection for nicknames. My mother
and descendent John Wright say his nickname was Jim, but my grandmother told
me Willis. Maybe that's what his estranged wife Emma called him, too.

James also lived in Coldwater, Ontario, prior to moving to Midland in 1933
to live with his sister Mrs. Alexander/Thomas Urquhart (Isabella or Belle)
in the Simkins Apartment. He had his portion of Con 2, Lot 71 W.P.R. in Flos
Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario to his brother Samuel 30/04/1904 for $250, which
is what he had paid for the property.

James is buried alone in French's Methodist Cemetery in Waverley, Ontario.

    follows:

married Ernest Vance who died in 1948 and then Howard Dierlam (1911- 1992).
No issue, but her great-nephew Vernon Riley lived with the Dierlams for

Co., Ont., Canada; died 15 Jan 1963, son of Arthur JAMES and Lydia Susanna
    SCARROW.

    Notes for Ruth Hildred WRIGHT

My grandmother was very short, less than 5 feet tall, with very blue eyes,
    and hair that was once fair. As a young girl she is impossible to visualize;
only one fuzzy snapshot of her exists. She was the firstborn of a 15 year
old girl and a forty year old man. And she had aspirations, she must have,
because she could read and write some. Her parents had been so illiterate
they were not even able to register her birth, and her father turned out to
    be improvident as well.

One of the first things she did with money she earned as a teenaged domestic
in a Hillsdale, Ontario roominghouse, was to buy herself a writing desk. Was
this where she sat down and recorded her multiple descendents' vital
statistics? She passed down all these details to me and she always
remembered birthdays with a card, and in the cases of her 30 odd
grandchildren, small cash sums. Her Christmas gift buying and distribution
rivalled Santa Claus' organizational skills. I imagine the Fesserton,
Ontario home where she raised her ten children was run the same way,
although she was frequently pregnant, frequently sick with pregnancy related
    problems and frequently nursing.

Eventually she developed diabetes, and her faculties were irrevocably
destroyed by a stroke about ten years before she actually died, but she
survived her husband by thirty years.

    Notes for Samuel Nelson JAMES

My grandfather died of emphysema, I believe. He had been gassed during the
war, as well sustaining facial nerve damage from a WWI bullet, but he also
    smoked. Tombstone is inscribed "C.E.F. 1914-1918; V.G.C. 1939- 1945."
Apparently, he had also joined forces during WWII as a middleaged man,
    solely to support his family.

As a child, he was the youngest surviving son in his family and much
indulged by his older sisters. But by the time he became a man, his
Fesserton, Ontario village was dying. The collapse of the lumbering industry
meant that Nelson could not depend on working in a sawmill like his English
immigrant father or his Ontario born mother had. So he took a tailoring
course in Toronto after WWI. Then he farmed a little, while working as a
baker, both in Midland and in Waubaushene, at a store called Thiffault's.

Somehow he pulled his growing family, with a new baby arriving every two
years, through the Great Depression and avoided going on Relief. The family
lived mostly in Waubaushene and on the land where Nelson had grown up. Their
white frame Fesserton home, overlooking Georgian Bay and surrounded by
hillside rock gardens, is where I remember them; we had a "cottage" a half
    mile away.

Nelson and Ruth had also lived in Toronto as newly weds, and Ruth returned
there during World War II with her youngest children. The older James
