In January, 1828, Henry Baker (1797-1863) made a list of the householders in Jamestown, providing information on the number of males and females in each household. He counted 544 residents of Jamestown, but only listed those heads of households who occupied a building. This census does not include all the adult male residents of the village. For example, Silas Tiffany boarded with the family of Solomon Jones, although Tiffany owned a store and residence on the northeast corner of Main and Second Streets which was occupied by J. E. Budlong. Baker also gave the statistics on the number of manufactories.
After 1878, William Wallace Henderson made a handwritten copy
of Bakers census, which included annotations made primarily
by Elial Todd Foote, and then by Henderson himself.
At the time Henderson made his transcription, Bakers
original listing was owned by Sidney Jones of Jamestown.
Henderson made this copy for the Chautauqua County Society of
History and Natural Sciences. In October 1895, he made another
copy, and in 1902 still another copy was made by Lucia Henderson.
These later two copies were made from Hendersons first copy
and contain errors in content and transcription. All three copies
are located at the Chautauqua County Historical Society,
Westfield, a gift of Clayburn B. Sampson.
The transcription presented here was made from Hendersons
first copy, and includes under householders names the
annotations made by Foote and the Hendersons in all three copies.
