HARRIET LUCRETIA ABBEY MOSHER
daughter of Henry (or Harry) and Eva (Ingersoll) Abbey, born September 3, 1816, in Guilford, N. Y.; died February 23, 1897, at Falconer, N. Y. She was a woman of more than ordinary ability and took a prominent part in church and social affairs. She was founder and first president of the Pine Hill Cemetery Association of Falconer and on each recurring Memorial Day her grave is specially decorated.
She married at Ellington, N. Y., 1844, EPHRAIM MOSHER, born May 8, 1802, in Oppenheim, Fulton County, N. Y., son of Peter and Mary (Rarrick) Mosher; died January 15, 1875. He was a descendant of Ensign Hugh Mosher, who settled in Salem about 1636; was a friend of Roger Williams and followed him to Rhode Island, settling in Westerly. Ephraim Mosher was one of the foremen of a pioneer construction gang on the Erie Canal between St. Johnsville and Buffalo, and later steered the first canal boat between Lockport and Brockport. It was upon his suggestion that Governor Clinton decided upon the plan of having a row of cannon placed within "hearing distance" apart across the state, between New York and Buffalo, to flash the news of the completion of the great enterprise. Mosher accompanied Governor Clinton's historic boat, departing from Buffalo at 10 A. M., the morning of October 26, 1825, leaving the boat at Little Falls, whence he returned the same day with a cargo of household goods, the first boat-load of merchandise to reach Buffalo from the eastern part of the state over the canal. The story goes that this first boat-load of household goods went to Chautauqua County, where Mosher settled near Worksburg.
Ephraim married (1) Maria Helmick, who was the mother of four children: Catherine, Margaret, Ephraim, and Ezra MOSHER

While in school, he had planned to become an architect, but ill health at that time forced him to change his plans. After finishing school he was a painting contractor for five years but returned to the newspaper business in which he had started as a carrier boy for the old Jamestown Morning News. He had also been a reporter for the Jamestown Daily All.
In November, 1900, he became editor and manager of the Jamestown Union Advocate and three years later purchased the Sinclairville Commercial and the Stockton and Cassadaga Spectator. In 1905 he purchased the assets of the Cherry Creek News. After that paper's plant was destroyed by fire, and moved his plant to Cherry Creek where he also published the South Dayton News, later consolidating that paper with the Cherry Creek News.Mr. Mills sold the News in October, 1910, and in December of that year he established the Falconer Printing Company, which he operated alone until, in January, 1947, he entered into partnership with Maurice E. Roach.
Mr. Mills retained his interest in newspapers while operating his commercial printing business, and was a frequent contributor to Jamestown newspapers. Since 1940 he had been a member of the Journal and Post-Journal staff as political news and feature writer.
During his residence in Falconer, Mr. Mills had taken an active interest in the affairs of the village. At various times he had issued special number of the Falconer Bulletin as occasion demanded, and for a time published the Southern Chautauqua Press. For 10 years he published a religious paper, The King's Business.
Mr. Mills had been active in religious circles as a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Falconer and was a member of the Levant Wesleyan Methodist Church at the time of his death. He was also a member of the Falconer Rotary Club.
Mr. Mills was the last surviving member of a family which for many years was prominent in Chautauqua County. Other members of the family were Rev. Frederick A. Mills, who served many pastorates for the Methodist Episcopal Church in western New York and Pennsylvania for more than 40 years. F. Adelbert Mills, well known in Jamestown as an entertainer, dealer in real estate and a barber; and Guy L. Mills, in the Chautauqua County clerk's office for 43 years, 32 of which he was special deputy county clerk attached to the Supreme and County Courts.
His twin sisters, Ida and Ada Mills, were well known as deaconesses in the Methodist Episcopal Church for 33 years, 28 of which were in Jersey City, NJ, where they conducted a Bible and industrial school among the tenement children. They died several years ago.

PETERSON Roger Tory 1908- 1996
Roger Tory Peterson, one of the world's preeminent naturalists, was born August 28, 1908 in Jamestown, Chautauqua County New York.
As is often the case, it was an influential teacher that turned a young boy away from mischief and toward a new future. Peterson's seventh grade teacher encouraged her class to join a Junior Audubon Club. Her enthusiasm for birds was captivating and almost overnight Peterson became completely absorbed in the world of birds. Not satisfied to passively observe the birds, identifying each species became a passion. To help his identifications he began making field sketches and soon thereafter decided to pursue a career as an artist.
After graduating from high school, Peterson moved to New York City where he attended the Art Students League (1927-1928) and the National Academy of Design (1929-1931). During this time, his pursuit of birds continued unabated and he had the opportunity to meet many of the leading ornithologists of the day. As an instructor in science and art at the Rivers School in Brookline, Massachusetts, he had his first opportunity to begin sharing his joy of bird watching with the next generation. Elliot Richardson (later Attorney General of the United States) was one of Peterson's students. Many years later, Richardson remembered Peterson's influence and nominated him for Outstanding Teacher of the Year. This award was only one of the many honors Peterson would earn in his lifetime. The culmination of Peterson's artistic and bird identification skills was the publication of his first book, A Field Guide to the Birds in 1934. What set A Field Guide to the Birds apart from the other guides of the day was what has since become known as the Peterson Identification System. Peterson's guide grouped similar species together on one page and used arrows to clearly designate important field marks. This allowed quick identification of a live bird by pointing out what field marks to look for. Previous guides required making a series of observations and measurements, usually assuming that the reader had a dead bird in hand. Peterson credits his artistic, non-biological training with enabling him to create a visual system not strictly tied to scientific classification. So significant was the success of his identification system that, while in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (1940-1943), Peterson was asked to adapt it to create a plane-spotting manual.
Still working on the fifth edition of his landmark A Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern and Central North America, still working on several other book projects, still traveling to speak to others and share his love of birds, and still traveling to see his beloved birds, Roger Tory Peterson died on July 28, 1996 at the age of 87. He leaves behind millions of people whose lives were enriched by his teachings about the natural world. He also leaves an enduring challenge to those of us left on this earth: to find a way to live on the planet that respects and sustains the natural order which protects and nourishes us all. Roger Peterson would also have us recognize the beauty of this world while we are here, and, with him, celebrate the joy of its creatures.
Those of us with this love of birds and nature can't help but feel indebted to Roger Tory Peterson for this important facet of our lives. There are many times that we felt he was there with us as we observed and identified birds for the first time, helping us, guiding us. All these wonderful and cherished memories come to mind on hearing of his passing along with the accompanying feelings of sadness and loss. But having opened our eyes and minds, he will continue to be with us in our explorations and journeys.
The Flicker has flown away
but the fascination and love it sparked
can not be taken away.
While exploring the woodlands around Jamestown, New York, eleven-year-old Roger Tory Peterson discovered a fallen Northern Flicker. Peterson's lifelong interest in birds began that day. "All of a sudden it exploded into life," the artist recalled years later. "That was the crucial moment of my life. I was overwhelmed by the contrast between something that was so vital and something I had taken for dead."
After Peterson passed away in 1996, his wife commissioned a recreation of Roger's famous flicker painting on his headstone at Pine Hill Cemetery in Falconer, New York. A small birdbath projects from the front of the granite marker beneath Roger's statement, "Birds to me are the most vivid expression of life." Robins and goldfinches often pause here to drink.
Pine Hill is situated on a promontory surrounded by woods. Roger would have liked birding here. Wild Turkeys strut along the access roads. Red-tailed Hawks soar overhead and Chimney Swifts swoop for insects. Bluebirds sometimes perch on the headstones to scan the neatly mown grass for prey.
Setting Foot on Sacred Ground
Enjoying birds in the peaceful setting around Roger Tory Peterson's grave seems appropriate. But visiting a cemetery solely to observe birds is a more novel approach to birding.
