ADKINS
MINA June 19, 1891 of Quick Consumption, John D. ADKINS died aged 43 years.
He was born in the town of Sherman August 19, 1848 where he lived til the age of 15 when his Father, Mother and Brother died within a few days of each other , soon after he came to Findley Lake where he made his home til he married and since then lived on the farm where he died. Although hardly yet in the prime of his life, his good judgment, industry, and business management had made him well known as a good farmer, and a reliable man. He was known as a staunch prohibitionist, He leaves a wife, and one son, (Willie J.) who have the sympathy of the entire community.

Samuel BARRINGER, a well known farmer of Mina, (Chautauqua CO NY) died suddenly last night at the home of his son in Law, Monroe STEBBINS in the town of Chautauqua. This Mary Beach is buried at Mina Corners cemetery; she’s listed in Shirley Bock Testi’s book, and her stone is in the Relf section with just “Mary A.” on it. She was born circa 1838, per the census; she was the daughter of Isaac RELF (1812-1889) and his wife Prudence (circa 1811-1866).

Mrs Louisa BEACH has received word of the death of her son, Arthur BEACH of Coleman Texas. He had been in poor health for several years and suffered a stroke December 7th, He passed away December 15th, 1929.
He leaves besides his wife, 2 sons, ALWIN BEACH who was with him at death and ALFRED BEACH who is attending Harvard Law School. His mother and 4 sisters, Mrs Jason (EVA) LEWIS, Mrs Fay BLISS, And Miss Lucille BEACH of this place and Miss Lillian BEACH of Washington, and one brother Clarence of CONN.

Clarence BEACH who was born at Findley Lake NY April 28, 1888 died in hospital in London CT Nov 2, 1931 aged 45 years. He spent the early part of his life here and served over 12 years in the US NAVY.
He was interred at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
The flag used in the ceremony was given to his son JACK BEACH, who with his sister JEAN, their mother Marie HULL Beach of Groton CT, his mother Louisa BEACH, 4 sisters are left to mourn his loss.

The eldest son of James and Miranda MANN passed away early Sunday morning from Influenza and pneumonia. His life had been spent here (Findley Lake) where he won the esteem of all. He was united in marriage with Miss Inez ODELL December 18, 1917 one daughter was born to them living but a short few months.

Mrs BEAL was a Great Great Granddaughter of Alexander FINDLEY, who founded the village of the name of Findley Lake NY She was the daughter of James FINDLEY and Sarah HASLETT FINDLEY , She is survived by her husband and 2 daughters, Mrs INA WOODS of North East and Mrs WINIFRED CHILCOTT of Pittsburg, 2 brothers, Roscoe FINDLEY and Rutherford FINDLEY of Mesa AZ, and 2 grandchildren. Mina Matters On Feb 10, Mr and Mrs Earl BUESINK'S infant daughter died of Whooping cough, Their four year old son, IVAN BUESINK had the cough at the same time, Mr And Mrs BUESINK also came down with Influenza and Mr Buesink got better, MRS Buesink is still sick, Ivan came down with the flu which turned into pneumonia and he died, March 4th 1920 age 4-3-3 Mr Buesink's sister, Addie HARMELINK of Marks Corners and Mrs BENSINKS Aunt, Mrs Rollie THORP of Findley Lake and Mrs Andrrew SCHUDER cared for them all during theeir illness, with Drs FINN and HAYNES for medical assistance, Ivan was a bright active little boy, beloved by everyone, and the bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community;

He was born Sept. 20, 1921, in Mayville, the son of Clarence ''Mush'' and Heila Overlander Biekert. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a radio operator. He had been employed by the New York State Department of Transportation in Mayville He is survived by his wife, E. Carol Pope Biekert; two daughters: Joan Morton of Westfield and Kathy Boberg of Mayville; a son, Paul Biekert of Jamestown; and 11 grandchildren. The People of Mina were shocked Sunday morning Feb 28th to hear that Lorenzo BOCK an old and respected citizen of Mina, had exchanged this world for the future; He was born in Germany August 15th 1830 He came with his parents to MINA, Chautauqua Co NY July 14th 1846 and has been a resident of this town since; His first wife died about 17 years ago, leaving an offspring of 13 children, 8 of whom are still living, He again married 2 children were born to this marriage, and are alive making 15 children 10 of whom survive him
He died just as though he went to sleep, with out a struggle, a loving father and husband a member of the community and honored citizen;

She also leaves 7 grandchildren and one sister MISS Rachel STANTON of Sherman, with whom she resided;. Mrs. Cave’s death was very sudden, and entirely unexpected, she was in her usual good health until in about a half hour of her passing.

Margaret I. Cherico, 87, of Clarence, formerly of Buffalo and Kittaning, Pa., died Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) in Buffalo General Hospital. She was born Aug. 20, 1914, in Sagamore, Pa., the daughter of George and Anna Wargo Yorko. She worked in Kittanning as a waitress and cashier. She had worked as a seamstress in Buffalo and as a riveteer during World War II. She is survived by her husband, Joseph R. Cherico of Clarence, whom she married Dec. 28, 1939; a daughter, Rita Gale Ruszceky of Dallas; a grandson, Edward Fenn of Clarence; and a brother. She was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters. Burial will be in Mina Cemetery.

SHERMAN--Curtis Cornell died Tuesday afternoon at the age of 68 years. He is survived by his wife, Minnie, seven children, Minnie, Clyde and Harold Cornell of Sherman: Mrs. James Harrington of Oil City, Pa., Mrs. Harry (Blanche) Shephard of Jamestown; Miss Theo Cornell of Cleveland, and Melvin Cornell of Jamestown; two brothers, Wallace and Chester Cornell of Niobe. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the home. The interment will be in Mina Cemetery.

Byron DAVENPORT of French Creek, Chautauqua Co NY, one of the wealthy and influential farmers of this area hanged himself, Wednesday;
He went to the barn, between 6 and 7 AM as if to do the milking, hung his lantern behind the horses, it’s usual place, then stepped upon a bucket , tied the rope around the scaffold and around his neck, then kicked the bucket out of the way. When found, his feet were touching the floor, and he had been dead about an hour;
He was 57 yrs old, had just sold his farm, and had offered to buy it back for $300 more than he had been paid, to buy it back again, the auction was to be Friday the 19th of Feb.
A note was found stating the future held no prospect for him,and this sad act supposed due to financial trouble;
He leaves a wife, 2 sons, Leigh DAVENPORT of Sherman and Claude of Mina, one adopted daughter Bertha PETIT, and 2 sisters, Mrs Lovica PETIT of French Creek and Mrs Sophia SWITZER of MASS,

In Memorian; Celestia, Wife of David DECLOW died April 27th 1887 deserves more than just a passing notice. In 1834 she came to this county with her husband helping to bear all the ups and downs of a new county. She was a mild and amiable disposition, modest and retiring in manners yet firm in her convictions of right. She shared the toils of her husband in securing a home, She was the mother of 10 children, of whom 7 survive her. For over 10 years she was troubled with heart disease. * A Mina Scrapbook

Mrs Lucy DECLOW arrived in town (Mina) sunday, bringing the remains of her 3 year old daughter Martha, who had died at Indianapolis IN Jan 22, She had been stopping at the Indiana Surgical Institute with her child for a short time, and they were in the 4th story of the building when it burned the night of the 21st, at which time 19 cripples were roasted alive, and they barely escaped, Mrs Declow losing her watch and all her money, she is stopping by with her parents, Mr and Mrs Henry MANN for the present,

Alfred M. Douglass died at his home on Park St. in this village at 2 o'clock last Sunday morning; October 2. Mr. Douglass was 81 years old, and his death came following an illness of more than two months, he having suffered a stroke about the middle of July last. Deceased was born on the Douglass farm in Mina on January 17, 1845, and which was his home for 54 years. Some six years ago he came to Sherman to live. Mr. Douglass was a member of the Community Church, Sherman Grange, president of the Mina Cemetery Association and one of the directors of the Sherman Telephone Company. He was an exemplary citizen in every respect and gave unswerving loyalty to every cause that was nearest to his heart. Such a life needs no eulogy.
He was married on Feb. 23, 1865 to Miss Emily L. Trivett, and for nearly 62 years they shared the joys and vicissitudes of life together. He is survived by the widow and three sons-Jay P. Douglass of Mina, Fred J. Douglass of North East, PA; and Roy A. Douglass of Canandaigua, NY. Funeral services in memory of the deceased were held from the home on Tues. afternoon, impressively conducted by the Rev. Harry Clay, Poland, Pastor of the Community Church. Members of the Grange attended in a body. Burial was in Mina Cemetery. Those in attendance from a distance were Mr.and Mrs. F.J. FINDLEY LAKE - Edward A. Eliason, 83, of 2682 Sunnyside Road, Findley Lake, died 4:35 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 30, 2003) in Saint Vincent Health Center, Erie.
He was born Aug. 24, 1920, in Erie, the son of Oscar A. and Jennie Anderson Eliason. He was a 1938 graduate of Findley Lake High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving during World War II from 1941 to 1945.He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Williams Eliason of Findley Lake, whom he married May 28, 1949; two sons: William Eliason of Glendale, Ariz., and David Eliason of Findley Lake; two daughters: Sally Landis of Findley Lake and Nancy Palpant of Elburn, Ill.; 10 grandchildren: and two brothers: Leonard Eliason of Findley Lake and Harold Eliason of Pensacola, Fla.
He was preceded in death by a sister, June Shafer, who died in 1997. Burial will be in Mina Cemetery.

PARKERSBURG, Ohio - Harry James Foster, 57, of Fourth Avenue, died Monday (Dec. 8, 2003) in Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital.
He was born Oct. 12, 1946, in Erie, the son of Lois Houghtling Foster and the late Oliver Foster. He was a 1966 graduate of Marietta High School. He had been employed by the Fenton Art Glass Company, as an assistant chef by Hotel Lafayette, and as a chef by Parkerburg Country Club for more than 10 years. He was also associated with the Washington Vocational School, where he was a tour guide. Besides his mother of Reno, he is survived by two sons: J.P. Danker of Cox's Mills, W.Va., and Stephan Gray of West Virginia; two daughters: Tina Szegda of Whitemore Lake, Mich., and Hilary Foster of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren: Booke Szegda, Jarred and Halley Schatz, and Jonathan Danker; three brothers: Gary Foster of Marietta, Terry Foster of Lowell and Jerry Foster of New York City; and two sisters: Linda Vannoy of Belleville, Ill., and Sonja Hahman of Glouster. He was preceded in death by his father, who died Feb. 15, 2001. A private graveside service will be held in Mina Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

He had been employed at Long Point state Park with the park police and as caretaker, retiring in 1969. He was born Nov. 9, 1903, in Wayne County, Ohio, the son of David and Minnie Walkrow Gibbens and had resided in the Mayville area the past nine years.
Surviving are his wife, the former Gladys L. Perdue, whom he married Oct. 30, 1923 in Erie, Pa. Also surviving are four sons, Elmer Gibbens of Jamestown, Andrew Gibbens of Ft. McCoy, Fla., now serving with the U.S. Army in Korea, Edwin Gibbens of Fredonia, Ellsworth Gibbens of Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters, Eva Truesdale of Terra Haute, Ind., Ann Foster of Parkersburg, W. She is survived by two daughters: Judy Smith of Mayville and Robin Khakpour of Rochester; a son, Ronald Nelson of Mayville; a grandson, David Smith of Laurel, Md.; a brother, Gerry Schermer of Cuba, N.Y.; two stepdaughters: Glenda Lyon of Ashville and Gloria Raymond of Jamestown; and three step-grandchildren: Shelly Brocci of Ann Harbor, Mich., Lon Lyon of Rochester and Bruce Lyon of Rochester. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter A. Nelson, who died Aug. 3, 1978, and her second husband, Charles R. Glad, who died Dec. 18, 1999. The Rev. Alan Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Mina Cemetery.

A lifetime resident of Sherman,She is survived by by her husband of 60 years, William A. Greene Sr., whom she married April 19, 1944; two daughters: Bonnie McCool and Karen Sparling, both of North East; an adopted daughter, Pat Bowman of North East; two sons: Bill Greene Jr. of North East and Kevin Greene of Great Valley; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Mary Camp of Ripley and Bernice Warner of Sherman. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rebeka McCool; four sisters: Gertie Rater, Mabel Taylor, Gladys Warner and Velma Meeder; and a brother, Lee Rater.
Interment will be in Mina Cemetery.

Dana P. HORTON, Supervisor of Mina died at his home in Findley's Lake shortly after midnight Monday morning, after a critical illness of about 2 weeks,. He was first taken ill about 1 yr ago when he suffered a stroke of Paralysis since that time has been poorly but managed to attend to business, Dana P HORTON was born at Gerry Chautauqua CO NY, December 24, 1838 and was therefore 59 yrs and 3 days old at the time of his death, After the War broke out he enlisted in 1862 and fought with the Army of the Potomac until after the Battle of Gettysburg when he went southwest with General HOOKER. On account of valiant service at Lookout Mountain, he was promoted to the rank of Captain. Shortly before the close of the war he was wounded and sent home receiving an honorable discharge, After the war Mr HORTON removed to the town of French Creek and in 1868 he removed to the town of Mina and conducted a large stock farm. He also became a politician of great power in the community, He was twice married and is survived by his widow and 2 daughters, Mrs Bebee DAVIS of Corry and Miss Myra HORTON

Glen A. Lewis, 61, of Cass Street, Westfield and formerly of Sherman and Wellsville, died Sept. 29, 2005 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Erie, Pa. He was born Feb. 26, 1944, the son of the late William R. and Clara M. Lewis. He worked in the sawmill for Babcock Lumber in Sherman and also for Better Baked Foods in Sherman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the Buffalo Bills. He is survived by a daughter, Beth Ann Lewis of Corry, Pa.; five grandchildren; a sister, Martha Gibbons of Westfield; and two brothers, William Lewis of Clymer and John Lewis of Mayville. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, an infant brother, Daniel Lewis and Ronald Lewis. Burial will be in Mina Cemetery

Findley Lake: Eloise M. Mead, 99, formerly of North Road, Findley Lake, died at 6:20 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 21, 2002) in the Twinbrook Medical Center, Erie.
She was born Sept. 6, 1903 in the Mina Township, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and Anna Cook Morse. She is survived by a son, Dale Mead of Las Vegas; two daughters: Alta Stanford of North East, Pa. and Lyla Valimont of Findley Lake; 13 grandchildren: 28 great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle W. Mead who she married Nov. 1, 1930, and who died May 28, 1982; a sister, Jessie Marie Morse; two half-sisters: Estelle Thomas and Maude Coe. Burial will be in Mina cemetery.

Hewitt O. Meeder, 78, of Ripley Chautauqua Co NY a retired farmer, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather died at 6 a.m. Saturday July 15, 2006 in his home.
He was born Sept.17, 1927 in the town of Ripley, the son of the late Mervin and Clarice HEWITT Meeder.
Hewitt had served in the Army Air Corp, having served at the end of World War II. He later worked at General Electric, while also farming and later made farming his choice of making a living from 1940 to retiring early in 1980.He is survived by his wife Madeline Tresler Meeder of 53 years of Ripley and three sons: Allan (Sandra) Meeder and Sidney (Darlene) Meeder Sr., both of Ripley and Larry (Ruth) Meeder Sr. of Clymer. Five grandchildren: Seven great-grandchildren Two brothers: Robert Meeder of Ripley and John Meeder of Erie and a sister, Mary (Skip) DeGray of Baltimore, Md. and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Biekert.

Bruce G. Merritt, 78, of Mina French Creek Road, Clymer, died Friday (July 2, 2004) at Erie Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was born Sept. 27, 1925, in Arcade, the son of the late Loren A. and Orvalyn Sargeant Merritt Jr. He attended grade school in Ashford, N.Y., and graduated from Cherry Creek High School. He attended Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y., where he studied the Bible for two years, and Wesleyan College. He was raised Methodist, where he was active as a lay minister. In early 1960, he became a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, currently North East C.M.A. Church. He was a self-employed dairy farmer in Clymer since 1953. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Ruby Kindberg Merritt, whom he married June 23, 1953; two daughters: Beth Artise of North East and Anita Bonomo of Cheswick, Pa.; a son, Mark Metzeger of Matthews, N.C.; a sister, Lila Simerl of Urbana, Ill.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Merritt Jr., in 1979; a brother, Loren A. Merritt III; and three sisters: Bessie Merritt, Dorothy Kirsh and Florence Pattison.

Nathan P. MORSE was born in Ellery, Chautauqua CO NY Jan 12th 1821 , He came to the town of MINA with his parents, Elisha and Mary ( EGGLESTON ) MORSE in August 1823. The county at that time was a vast forest, His boyhood days were spent clearing a farm, and driving herds of cattle hundreds of miles to market. ONE sister was born into this house, who died nearly 18 years ago. In the year 1850 he was married to Sylvia A. GREEN of Greenwich NY , who with one son and 2 Grandaughters survive him.
Mr MORSE died Feb 15th 1905 at the age of 84 years having lived on this farm where he died over 82 years. Source; A Mina Scrapbook

Muriel M. Morton, 86 formerly of Marks Road, died at 7:10 p.m Wednesday (March 3, 2004) in The Waters of Westfield. She was born May 16, 1917, in the town of Mina, the daughter of R. Lee and Mable Newhouse Wright. She was a graduate of Mina Corners school, and had been employed by Elton Swoap Fruit Farm, and in later years, as a receptionist by Dr. Eugene Howard for many years. She was a member of the Findley Lake United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son, Richard Morton of Sherman; three daughters: Margaret Maleski of Findley Lake, Donna Smith, New Hampton, N.H., and Beverly Motherwell of Olean; 11grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, George Wright of Findley Lake; and a sister, Shirley Eliason, of Findley Lake. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry F. Morton, whom she married Nov. 15, 1940, and who died Dec. 24, 1983; a daughter, Barbara Jude, who died March 3, 1997; three sisters: Ruth Hitchcock in 1942, Ella Thompson in 1987 and Hazel Swoap in 2003; and a brother, the Rev. Robert Wright in 1998.

EARL NUTTALL drowned, little fellow fell into Findley Lake
It is our sad duty to announce one of the saddest drowning that has occurred in the lake here for years. That of Little Earl NUTTALL son of Supervisor and Mrs. W L Nuttall the little fellow fell into the lake about 9’30 am and was in about 15 to 20 minutes, , a little after 8 Earl came over to town with his Papa and they took a ride in their launch up the lake, When they came back, Mr. Nuttall told Earl to go on home, and walked up to the store, but in little boy fashion, wanted to play just a little longer, and was playing with his little toy sailboat, His mother, getting alarmed at their absence sent his sister Verna to the store after him, then a search was launched, first his little boat was found floating out in the water then his body was discovered some distance from shore, medical assistance was at hand but the most stringent efforts failed to revive the spark of life,

OTTAWAY was born October 19, 1840 in Mina Chautauqua CO NY, and spent nearly his entire life in this little town; Reared on a farm, accustomed to the toil and privations of clearing and making a wilderness a home, his whole life was devoted to agricultural pursuits, save one year given to his country’s service; He served 1 full year and because of sickness, was sent to hospital where he became so feeble that 2 months later Sept 30th 1863 he was discharged because of disability, He never fully regained his strength, yet with great resolution he labored on his farm til a few days before he ceased to live;

He was born Sept. 13, 1926, in North Clymer, the son of Lee Persons and Ina Moore Persons Baroth. He had owned and operated a dairy farm on the North Clymer-Sherman Road from 1942 to 1994. He had also been employed as a carpenter by Tallman & Son. Following his retirement, he was employed by Peek 'n Peak Resort & Conference Center. He enjoyed hunting and his grandchildren.
He is survived by a son, Steven Persons of North Clymer; two daughters: Kay Paul and Connie Fortune, both of Sherman; six grandchildren: Bill Persons, Chris Cady and Kelli Briggs, all of Sherman, James Cady of Hubert, N.C., Janel Webb of Mayville and Joe Paul of Jamestown; two stepgrandchildren: Michael Fortune of Bemus Point and Mark Fortune of Jamestown; 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Caroline Gabriel of French Creek and Lula Lee England of Lewes, Del.

Ralph ''Sam'' Plumb, 95 of 9343 Route 430, died at 12 a.m. Friday (May 27, 2005) in The Waters of Westfield. He was born Aug. 19, 1909. in Sherman, the son of Harvey and Pearl Shore Plumb and raised by Ernest and Ethel Pratt. He was a 1927 graduate of Sherman Central School.
He lived on his 120-acre dairy farm in the Town of Mina since 1928, and had worked on many area dairy farms. He was a member of the Olive Lodge 575 F & AM and the Acacia Chapter 96 Order of the Eastern Star having joined in 1978. He was a member of the Oddfellows in Mayville, since 1937, where he was a past district deputy, a member of the Ismalia Shrine Temple in Jamestown, and Jamestown Consistory. He was a former member of the North Harmony Senior Citizens.
He had helped Bill Barney build log homes in the area, and he enjoyed bowling & word puzzles.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Irene Waters Plumb of Sherman, whom he married Nov.12, 1949.Burial in Mina Cemetery

The death of Harvey PLUMB, former superintendent of highways of the town of Sherman occurred at the home of his father and mother in this village after a long illness with Bright’s disease. Mr Plumb was in his 36th year. And is survived by a 4 year old son, RALPH PLUMB and by his mother and Father, Mr and Mrs H.O (HERMAN) PLUMB. And one brother Harley PLUMB of North East and one sister Miss Ethel PLUMB living at home.
Mr PLUMB was a native of Herkimer CO NY coming to the town of Mina and to Sherman about 10 years ago. He has been twice married, first to Miss Mable CAVE who died soon after 2nd to Miss Pearl SHORE who has been dead about 2 years.

FINDLEY LAKE--LaVera Spencer Rouse of Williamsburg, Va., and Findley Lake, died Thursday (Oct. 8, 1992)in Saint Vincent Health Center, Erie, Pa.
She was born in Erie, a daughter of the late Lavern and Mae Vatter Spencer. Mrs. Rouse lived in Findley Lake most of her life, and for the past ten years had spent some time in Williamsburg. Surviving are a daughter, Roxanne Rouse of Williamsburg; a son Douglas Rouse of Corry, Pa.; three grandchildren and a sister, Irene Reed of Findley Lake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron Rouse and two brothers, Gerald and Harold Spencer. Private burial was held in Mina Cemetery.

He was a farmer and sawmiller, and first settled in Wheelock, Vt., but removed after a few years to the neighboring town of Danville, where he resided until 1817, when he removed to Genesee Co., N. Y., and has since lived in various places, and has experienced an eventful life. He d. at his son's residence in Illinois, in 1853, ‘. 76.
He m. in Pepperell, Jan. 18, 1799, ELIZABETH PERHAM, b. Oct. 23, 1774, (see p. 119.) She d. in Mina, Chautauque Co., NY., April 24, 1851, ‘. 76 y. 6 m. 1 d. Most of her family were members of the Christian Church. In a letter to his relative in Fitchburg, dated in 1851, he says, "My 8 children have had 57 children, and buried 5. I have had 11 great-grandchildren."

William SKELLIE of Mina , Chautauqua CO NY, was a veteran of the Chautauqua assembly grounds and for years was the Bell Ringer there. He was a kindly old man, full of Chautauqua Lore, which made him interesting to converse with;
He was of stalwart frame with a full crown of white hair, by trade , he was a blacksmith, and was a master of that vocation. He was known far and wide for the excellence of his work as a farrier; April 1st he died at the home of his son, in law, George HULET, his last sickness, paralysis, was of short duration, His age was 77 years 9 days;
He was laid in his last rest in the Mina Cemetery, an aged wife, 2 sons and 3 daughters survive him;
Of him it can be said, he lived a “GOOD” old age

Death of FRED SLIKNER
Mr. Fred SLIKNER of Mina died of Typhoid pneumonia, Jan 22 He had been a resident of this community for about 40 years. He was about 62 years of age, and a member of the German Reform Church for 38 years. Just 2 months ago his daughter ROSA was laid away in the tomb, A wife and 4 daughters are left to mourn, (* 1887) A Mina Scrapbook this is the only family of this name in this country it died out

Widow of the late Fred SLIKNER died at her home in the town Monday, age 50 years. Mrs. SLIKNER was born in Germany October 17, 1842 and came to this country when 19 years of age.

SPEELBERG
William H. Speelberg, 86, formerly of Station Road, Findley Lake, and 125 Church St., Sherman, died 1:45 p.m. Saturday (May 10, 2003) in the Corry Manor Nursing Home.
He was born June 1, 1916, in the town of Mina, the son of Henry and Sarah Newhouse Speelberg.
He was a member of the Sherman Community Church and had owned and operated a dairy farm on the Mina-French Creek Road, was employed by Sherman Steam Mill and retired in 1978 from the town of Mina Highway Department, where he had been employed as a truck driver for 15 years.
He is survived by a daughter, Jean Ferguson of Clymer; two stepdaughters: Nyla Phelps of Clymer, and Kay Lewis of McKean, Pa.; two grandchildren: Brenda Ohlsson of Sherman, and Pamela Carey of Findley Lake; two great-grandchildren; eight step grandchildren: Terry and Timothy Phelps, both of Findley Lake, Cindy Kopta and Cathy Redlecki, both of Clymer, Sherry Reed of North East, Pa., Shirley Larson of Phoenix, Thomas Phelps of Ripley, and Tammy Snyder of Falconer; 14 step great-grandchildren; seven step great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Laura Barringer of North East.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Smith Speelberg, whom he married Sept. 15, 1939, and who died April 20, 1996; three brothers: Harry, Walter and Jay Speelberg; and two sisters: Clarice Schreefer and Viola Doncavage

Last Saturday afternoon, our citizens were again startled by the report that another Findley’s Lake man had been killed by the cars at Northeast, Erie Co PA
George G. STETSON was walking on the Lake shore tack near that place and did not see the fast train approaching from the east until it was too late to save himself The engineer blew the whistle but Mr Stetson was very deaf, and did not hear it; The locomotive struck him and he was thrown high in the air and when he was picked up he was horribly mangled.

NORTH EAST, Pa. - Hazel I. Wright Swoap, 83, formerly of Ripley, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) in the Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center.
She is survived by two sons: Lee E. Swoap of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Gary B. Swoap of Palm Bay, Fla.; three sisters: Nancy Root and Betsy Swoap Bort of Erie and Janet Skinner of Ripley; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, George Wright of Findley Lake; and two sisters: Muriel Morton of Westfield and Shirley Eliason of Findley Lake. Interment will be in Mina Cemetery.
TenHAGEN WARNSHUIS
Virginia Marguerite TenHagen, 73, of 108 Hayes St., Sherman died Friday (Dec. 3, 2004) in the Saint Vincent Health Center, Erie.
She was born August 15, 1931, in Sherman, the daughter of William J. and Marguerite Doncavage Warnshuis. She was a graduate of Alfred State University and had been an executive secretary to the Sheraton Hotel manager in Buffalo. She had also been employed in the office of the W.L. Nuttall & Son Ford dealership for 40 years and, from 1989 to the present, as secretary for the Sherman Central School principal's office.
She was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi and Theta Theta Chi international sororities, Woman of the Year Business & Professional Women's Association, was a French Creek Yorker sponsor for 17 years and had served as Sherman Sesqui-Centennial co-chairwoman and was instrumental in the building of the North Haven Senior Citizen Apartments. She was the first woman to be First Lady of Sherman for Sherman Day.
She was a beloved wife, mother and mother-in-law of Jane, and friend. At her request, no funeral service or visitation will be held.
She is survived by her husband, Winslow C. TenHagen, whom she married Oct. 10, 1953; and a son, Spencer TenHagen of Vinalhaven, Maine.

Died at his residence in Mina, Chautauqua Co NY, May 26, 1894 Mr. Asher THOMPSON in the 87th year of his age;
The deceased was born in Oneida CO NY and came to Mina at the age of 27 where he purchased his farm where he resided til his death, and at which time was the primeval forest. He was noted for his great physical strength and endurance which was utilized in the felling of his forest and clearing of his land, changing it to a productive farm and by hard labor and economy accumulating a moderate amount of property, In 1841 he married to Miss Harriet SHATTUCK who died in 1887
Of a family of 2 sons and 6 daughters, only 3 of the later living to womanhood and only 2 living now, Mrs. LIZZIE WILLARD and Mrs Martha STETSON, both of Mina. The funeral was held at Mina Corners burial in the cemetery there

Daughter of SEWALL SHATTUCK, s. of Simeon, (p. 145,) was b. in Pepperell, March 25, 1777. He was a farmer and sawmiller, and first settled in Wheelock, Vt., but removed after a few years to the neighboring town of Danville, where he resided until 1817, when he removed to Genesee Co., N. Y., and has since lived in various places, and has experienced an eventful life. He d. at his son's residence in Illinois, in 1853, ‘. 76. He m. in Pepperell, Jan. 18, 1799, ELIZABETH PERHAM, b. Oct. 23, 1774, (see p. 119.) She d. in Mina, Chautauque Co., N. Y., April 24, 1851, ‘. 76 y. 6 m. 1 d. Most of her family were members of the Christian Church. In a letter to his relative in Fitchburg, dated in 1851, he says, "My 8 children have had 57 children, and buried 5. I have had 11 great-grandchildren." dau Harriet, b. Jan. 27, 1813; m. Died at the home of her parents, at Findley’s Lake Chautauqua CO NY February 21 1894 Mrs. Minnie J.S. WEAVER the only child of Ebenezer and Sarah SKELLIE;
Deceased was born November 7 1868, November 1891 she was married to Reed WEAVER who is so soon to mourn the loss of his loving wife.
5 weeks ago she was taken sick, but was thought to be recovering, and Tuesday was up and around the house, Wednesday, she was taken suddenly worse and died soon after;
A few days before her death, she told her mother, not to cry if she should be called away, for she would stand ready to take her by the hand and welcome her to heaven and tell Pa and Reed to meet me there; An old Scrapbook

On Monday, Ben WHITNEY , a much respected citizen of Findley’s Lake, went to his barn, climbed up on the hay, rolled himself into a blanket, took 27 Morphine pills and laid down to die; He was soon missed and his wife found him and roused him in time to save him; He told her what he had done, and said he just wanted to put himself out of the way. He has been asleep since, and may yet, “Climb the golden stair” He has for years suffered with a sick headache and had been regularly taking 2 of those little pills to relieve his pain; An Old Scrapbook clipping

An old resident of Mina, died last weekend, and was buried in the Mina Cemetery;
Although he lived less than a quarter mile from the Post office in this town, he had not been IN the town for 10 years at least, He seldom if ever left the home of Mrs. RICKARD where he resided. A great many did not know the old man lived so near them til he died;

WILLIAMS
PLEASANTVILLE, Pa. - The Rev. Robert E. Williams, 75, of 248 Third St., died Thursday (March 27, 2003) in Hamot Medical Center, Erie, the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born July 12, 1927, near Findley Lake, the son of Ruth Sherman Williams and the late Royal Williams. He graduated from Ripley Central High School and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He entered the ministry in 1955, serving various free methodist churches, in the Mayburg Circuit including Sugar Grove, Youngsville, Ellwood City, Pa., the Arlington Church in New Castle, Pa., and then served as superintendent of the Oil City Conference of the Free Methodist Church from which he retired. He then served the Pleasantville Free Methodist Church in his retirement. He was a member of the Pleasantville Town Council.
A favorite part of his ministry throughout his many years in the ministry was planning and following through with renovation projects. His hobbies were hunting and fishing.
Besides his mother of Gerry, he is survived by his wife, Wilma Hayner Williams, whom he married Sept 9, 1949, in Findley Lake; a son, Jim Williams of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two daughters: Judy Caramia of Bailey, Colo., and Joyce Williams of Warrenton, Va.; two grandchildren: Christopher and Angela Caramia; and two brothers: Frank Williams of Akron, Ohio, and Mark Williams of Pleasantville and Florida.
