NOTE: The obit. of Pearley Fairbanks says he died at the residence
of N. T.
Hamilton, his son- in-law, d. ae 81-5-3. Was born in Wardsboro, Vt.
of an
honorable parentage, his father being for many years a J. P. and
representing his native town in the State Assembly. He emigrated to
this
county fifty one years ago, at the age of thirty, purchasing, clearing
up
the farm now 0ccupied by Joseph Garfield. He afterwards removed to
Ellicott
and eventually to the town of Poland. Mr. Fairbanks is described by
his
contemporaries as a man of vigorous constitution, strong mind, intelligent,
honorable in his dealings
and business intercourses with his fellow men. He was a man of great
industry and enterprise and contributed a noble part towards laying
the
foundation of society in this county, developing its resources and
making it
what it is. Mr. Fairbanks was twice married, raised a large and respectable
family.......The funeral services took place at (Mud Creed) Clark's
Corners.

on Feb.
8. He was b. in Essex Co. but had been a resident of this town for
more than
a quarter of a century. Of a large family none survive him but one
brother
and sister, Fayette Jenks and Mrs. Lucinda Taylor, both of this place.
His
wife died about three years ago, and on dau., Lizzie Jenks
preceded her parents to the better country several years since. Dennis
Jenks
and Mrs. Albert Bird are the only survivors of the family. Funeral
services
in M.E. Church Kennedy. Interment was in cemetery at Clark's Corners.

(He entered the war of 1812 as a private and soon after was promoted
to be a
captain and was engaged at the battles of Plattsmouth and Champlain.
His
business relations were open and straightforward throughout his life
and his
departure from earth was mourned and regretted. He was born in the
" Green
Mountain State"and was brought to Essex Co. NY when he was 13 years
old. He
was later occupied the dignified position of school teacher, which,
in those
days, was one of great honor but of small emoluments, and he abondoned
teaching to learn carpentering and afterwards discarded the later for
farming. About 1837-38 he came to the town of Poland and purchased
a piece
of land and making a farm of it, lived there until he died, when eighty
years old. He married in the home of his youth when about twenty-two
yrs. of
age, taking for his wife Melinthia Mason. Obediah was b. 21 Dec 1792
