SPRAGUE FAMILY, MANSFIELD NY

Sprague Family Information

by Virginia Sprague Webster

My name is Virginia Sprague Webster and I was delighted to find genealogical work being done in Cattaraugus County.  I am a direct descendant of one of the earliest families in Mansfield.  I am in possession of "History of Cattaraugus County New York" Philadelphia: L. H. Everts (press of J. B. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia) which my family purchased when it was first published in 1879.  Among various references, there are two in particular: on p. 457 is mention of STEPHEN SPRAGUE and his son ARGALUS who settled in Mansfield c. 1823; and on p. 455 is a picture of the residence of ADDISON SPRAGUE (son of ARGALUS).

STEPHEN SPRAGUE (my great, great, great grandfather) is the direct descendant of Francis Sprague who arrived in Plymouth, MA in 1623 aboard the ship THE ANNE.  Stephen was born 10/24/1771 in Sharon, CT.  He is the son of Thomas and Prudence (Eggleston) Sprague who eventually settled in Hannibal, NY (Onondaga Co.).  I do not know the name of Stephen's wife or any of his other children (except Argalus, my great, great grandfather).

ARGALUS SPRAGUE was born 1809 in Onondaga Co., NY.  He married Mary ____, who was born in Vermont in 1807.  They had 5 children: Addison Sprague b. 1832; George Sprague b. 1834; Mary Sprague b. 1838; Julia Sprague b. 1840; Angeline Sprague b. 1844. No further info.

ADDISON SPRAGUE (my great grandfather) was born 2/14/1832 in Mansfield,NY. He married Sarah Jane Peterman (b. 4/20/1836, Milton,PA) on 5/29/1855, Rev. James C. Watson was officiating minister.  Addison died 4/1893 and Sarah Jane died 1/1/1916--I believe they are both buried in E. Randolph,NY.  They had six children: WILLIAM A. SPRAGUE b.12/15/1856, New Albion,NY; m. Suzie _____; no further info.

JOHN DEVILLO SPRAGUE b. 5/25/1858, Mansfield,NY; m. Lydia ____ on 10/14/1877. John died 9/15/1939 and is buried in Little Valley where he lived most of his adult life.  Children: Sarah Sprague Steward; Marcus Sprague; Benjamin H. Sprague; May Sprague Mink; Hazel Sprague Woodard.

CLARENCE ANDREW SPRAGUE b. 12/27/1859, Milton, PA; never married; lived most of his adult life in E. Randolph,NY; d. 11/25/1931 and is buried in E. Randolph.

GEORGE ADDISON SPRAGUE b. 11/28/1861, Mansfield,NY; m.(1)______; children: Vernon Sprague of Albion, NY; Hesta Sprague (died as a child); Blanche Sprague Otto.  George was a co-founder of the Woods & Sprague Milling Co., later bought by GLF, Albion,NY; m.(2) Alice Maude English b. 12/31/1870, Albion,NY; d. c. 1971.  George died 10/12/1928 in Albion,NY.

THOMAS HILLABRANT SPRAGUE (my grandfather)b. 12/14/1869, Mansfield,NY ; d. 7/2/1921, Cohoes,NY.  He moved to Cohoes as a young man and married Bertha Mott (b. 4/8/1879, Cohoes,NY) in 1898.  They had 8 children and are buried in Oakwood Cemetery, N.Troy, NY.

BLANCHE ADELL SPRAGUE b. 7/28/1872; never married; lived with her brother, Clarence in E. Randolph.  Died 8/6/1960 and is buried in E. Randolph Cemetery, Lot No. 356.

This is all the info I have on the Spragues in that area.  I am trying to find missing names and burial cites for any of the above.  Hope this has been of some help to you.
