Alonzo Fellows From: Terrence Spencer <[email protected]>
Subject: Here's information you may want included

My great grandfather, Alonzo Fellows, enlisted 21 August 1863, mustered
in 11 September 1863, in the 13th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment,
Company "C". He was 31 years of age at time of enlistment, and was born
in Panama, NY. According to the Compendium of the War of the Rebellion
by Frederick H. Dyer, Company "C" was mustered in on 11 September 1863
in Elmira, NY. Another source (cannot recall, but is factual) has
Charles Francis Bacon as the surname for the 13th NY Heavy Artillery
Regiment. His duty was teamster, and he was appointed Corporal at time of
mustering (11 September 1863), and promoted to Sergeant 27 November 1864. On
27 June 1865, his unit was transferred to the 6th New York Heavy
Artillery, including him, Company possibly "A", "K", or "H" (unclear on
document). His date of birth was 07 July 1833, date of death 06 October
1916. He is buried in Crawford Cemetery, Salamanca, NY.

His parents were Jonathan and Susan Chase Fellows, according to an
application for membership in Daughters of Union Veterans dated 1973 made
by Maude Moore Spencer,   Alonzo's grand daughter. This document has his
discharge date as August, 1865 (day of month not indicated). After
returning home from the war, Alonzo joined the Sherwood Post, Grand Army of
the Republic, in Salamanca, NY. His date of joining or leaving this
organization is not stated.  His grand daughter joined Tent Number 78,
Anna Etheridge Tent, Salamanca, NY on 15 July 1972. This was disbanded on
30 June 1983.
His first wife was Harriet Electa Warner, date of birth 09 July 1840,
by whom there were four children. He married her before age 15, and she
had four children  by the time she was 21. Their children were Susan,
born 1856, died 1895, buried at Crawford Cemetery, Salamanca, NY,
Jonathan, born 1859, and Horatus, born 1860. (Apparently, there was
one child born during the time of Alonzo's wartime absence, and not
mentioned in the papers I have from 1998). Harriet was a matron and nurse
at the Salamanca Hospital. After divorcing from Harriet, Alonzo married
Cynthia Moffet, daughter of Mary Gage and Mark Moffet. Their children
were Florence Grace Fellows, born 1875, and Grace Miriam Fellows, born
06 May 1896. Florence Grace married Thomas Spencer, of Salamanca, NY,
and Grace Miriam married Frank Eldridge, of Salamanca, NY.  (Thomas and
Florence Grace Spencer are my paternal grandparents).

There is speculation that Alonzo Fellows was adopted, due to his place
of birth listed as Panama, NY on his service papers. There appears to
be no record of birth for him, but there are Fellows families in the
Jamestown, NY area, who claim no lineage to the Fellows family in the
Salamanca, NY area.

Hope this may prove of use to add to the listing. If there are any
questions, or if anyone has any further info on the military history of the
13th NY Heavy Artillery Regiment, I am still trying to research that,
and will gladly share and cooperate in research. My name and address,
etc. are:
