Visitor Information
IROQUOIS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Visitor Center/Headquarters
located on Casey Road, midway between Routes 77 and 63, 1 mile north of Alabama. Office hours are
Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. year-round, except holidays. Exhibits and information are
available. The visitor center is also open on weekends from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. during spring migration.

To protect wildlife and wildlife habitat some visitor activities are restricted or prohibited at certain
times of the year. To protect nesting wildlife all areas of the Refuge except, overlooks and nature trails
are closed to the public between March 1 - July 15. Please check for current regulations. Outdoor
facilities are open daily, sunrise to sunset unless otherwise stated.

Hiking Trails
Kanyoo Nature Trail - located on Route 77. Offers two loops, 2/3 mile and 1 mile in length. An observation
platform and short boardwalk provide views of Mohawk Pool.
Onondaga Nature Trail - located on Sour Springs Road is a 1.2 mile trail (one way). A gravel dike leads
into mixed woods of maple/aspen/pine. The trail returns to the parking lot by the same route. (Closed to
hiking during shotgun deer hunting season.)

Swallow Hollow Nature Trail - located on Knowlesville Road is approximately 1 mile long. The trail
circles a freshwater marsh and is part boardwalk, gravel dike and packed soil.

Feeder Road - located just north of Kanyoo Trail is a 3.5 mile section of an historic dirt and gravel road.
Once the main road between Medina and Akron, it passes through waterfowl resting and feeding areas,
grasslands, and woods and offers a view of the bald eagle's nest.

Overlooks
Viewing of resting and feeding waterfowl is best just after sunrise and just before sunset.
Cayuga Overlook - located on Route 77 approximately 1/2 mile north of Kanyoo trail. The great blue
heron rookery is visible.

Ringneck Overlook - located on Oak Orchard Ridge Road on the northwest side of Ringneck Marsh.
Schoolhouse Overlook - located on Oak Orchard Ridge Road, just east of Ringneck Overlook.
Mallard Overlook - located on Sour Springs Road on the east side of Ringneck Marsh.
Other Activities:
Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing - permitted on Feeder Road, Kanyoo and Onondaga Trails,
conditions permitting. Also, Mohawk Ski Trail, a 7.5 mile loop of the Mohawk Pool, starts and ends behind
the Visitor Center. The Mohawk Trail is closed to all access March 1 - July 15.

Canoes or other unmotorized boats - permitted on Oak Orchard Creek
only. Primitive conditions. Check with Visitor Center for access restrictions.

Hunting, fishing, frogging, trapping - permitted within most state seasons October 1 - end of February.
Specific maps, and regulations are available at Visitor Center. Permit required for waterfowl and spring
turkey hunting and for trapping.

Environmental Education
Organized schools, civic groups and professional groups may reserve dates for slide talks, movies and
guided walks. Teacher workshops are offered at certain times of the year. Write or call for more
information.

We need your help
-Drive only on public roads. No ATV's or snowmobiles allowed.
-Keep the refuge clean. Take your trash home with you.
-Keep all pets on a leash at all times.
-Leave flowers, shrubs and other plants for the next visitor to see.
-No camping or fires. Picnic facilities are available on Oak Orchard State Wildlife Management Area.
-No horses or horseback riding on the refuge. Horseback riding is permitted
on neighboring state lands.
-No firearms, except when hunting on open areas during hunting season.
