The Western New York Historical Collection is located on the main floor of Hinkle Memorial Libary, Alfred State College, Alfred, NY. Organized in 1964 by library clerk Jean B. Lang, who was the curator until 1991, the collection contains historical and genealogical information from the Western New York Area, with an emphasis on Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Monroe, and Steuben counties. The collection is also the official repository for the Alfred Historical Society. The room is open for research during library hours.
The Alfred Sun has an "in-process" index beginning in December 1883. The newspaper is on microfilm (1883-1976) and in bound volumes to the present. Hist AI 21 A47 is the Sun name index. An index for 1978+ is current. Much of the Sabbath Register and Sabbath Recorder is also on microfilm, with a partial index. These periodicals list many marriages and deaths of Seventh Day Baptists from 1840 to the present.
The Whitesville News and the Patriot from Wellsville and short runs of other newspapers are not indexed. The Andover News (1887-1958) is on microfilm in the Microform Room.
Early area atlases are stored on the oversize shelves under the bound newspapers. Historical and topographical maps are in the map case. Census material is cataloged under Hist HA 201... and Hist F 118...
The vertical files contain clippings, pamphlets, documents, etc. filed by subject. A genealogy file contains genealogical papers arranged alphabetically by family name.
The Brownell genealogical collection, arranged alphabetically by last name followed by obituaries for the Wellsville Daily Reporter, 1966-1973.
