Susannah Marple was born in 1741/42 and died September, 1822 in Gloucester, New Jersey, and issued a marriage license to wed John Heritage December 7, 1768. While her husband, John was a prisoner during the Revolutionary War off the coast of New York on the prison ship Old Jersey, Susannah kept the home fires burning in Gloucester.

On one occasion, she kept her family alive by feeding them from a barrel of potatoes which she had buried in the cellar to hide from the constantly-plundering Hessians. Her daughter, Ann, an infant at the time, had one of her cheeks frozen while her mother was trying to save a cow which the enemy drove off and slaughtered.

Ann later married Samuel Redfield, a sea captain, who was born January 23, 1757 in Middletown, CT.
