Print from "Our New West" By Samuel Bowles, Published 1869
The county is named after General Fredrick W. Lander a road builder for
the Department of the Interior. He was key in negotiating a peace settlement
with the Indians during the Pyramid Lake War.
The central location attracted prospectors fanning out across the Great
Basin after the discovery of the Comstock Lode in 1859.
The county seat is Battle Mountian.
Did you know? The Pyramid Lake Battle is a site on the Music CD by Tori Amos, Scarlet's Walk. Owners of the CD can place it into their computer and it provides access into a special web site that provides links to many key places in Native American History.
