When the Federation index was released on CD-ROM in 1993, I found a couple of instances in my own research where the place of registration shown just did not fit the pattern of the family's known movements. For instance, a birth registered at Berry, followed by a birth two years later registered at Berrigan, and a third birth two years later again at Berry looked suspicious.
I referred the first couple of examples to Alison Morgan at the NSWRG, and after investigation she confirmed that some mistakes had slipped through. Alison explained that the problem occurred when two pages in a register volume stuck together while the place of registration was being extracted.
The symptoms to look for when you are suspicious of a location are quite simple to identify. If the location you think is wrong has no registrations for the year immediately before, and the year immediately after, the suspect registration, then your suspicion is almost certainly correct. If this is combined with the location you think should be correct having no registrations for the year of the suspect registration, but having registrations for the preceding year, then the location is definitely wrong and the Registry should be informed.
Those entries which I have so far identified as having an incorrect location are shown in the following table. Should you know of others, please contact me so that we can have this list as complete as possible.
Now that the indexes are available online at www.bdm.nsw.gov.au, it is advisable to first check any suspicious locations on this site as many corrections were made in the creation of the web database.
Some blocks of registrations can be clearly identified, but others can only have an approximate start and/or end number proven. These are indicated with an asterisk in the table.
Thanks to those who have contributed, particularly Jenny Paterson of the Burwood-Drummoyne FHG who has extended my original list considerably. However, from all the input received, it is clear that many more such cases are waiting to be discovered.
