PIONEER FAMILIES of the SOUTHERN ILLAWARRA and NORTHERN SHOALHAVEN

During the summer of 1994-95, the Gerringong Historical Society held a very successful exhibition featuring the Pioneering Families of the district. Considerable information was provided on a large number of families.

As the exhibition had a limited life-span, the society recognised the need to preserve the family information in a form which would be easily accessible by visitors to the Museum. At the same time, they were aware of the large amount of information I had gathered over the years from various sources relating to these families. Thus was born the idea of the Pioneer Family Register.

Two other factors also came into play when determining the scope of the Register:

  • The amount of inter-marriage between families originating in Gerringong and other families of the Southern Illawarra and Northern Shoalhaven, and vice-versa; and

  • The mass migration from the Illawarra/Shoalhaven to the Richmond River, commencing in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, which resulted in many Illawarra/Shoalhaven families having blood ties to Richmond River families.

    Because some families in the area covered by this site have only a tenuous genealogical relationship with the Gerringong area, the Register has been split into two sections:

  • Those families who lived (and, in many cases, continue to live) in the Gerringong area, and

  • Those families established in other parts of the Southern Illawarra and Northern Shoalhaven and having family links to the Gerringong area.

    Within the Register, details of families cease with births after 1920. Where people born after 1920 have been included, it is because others of their generation within the family were born prior to 1920. In this case, personal details for those born after 1920 have been suppressed, as some of them are still living.
