Sterling Emma                   (1838-    )

census 1891:  born in Scotland, Farmer and founder of home.  A sort of orphanage.  According to "A History of Aylesford and District" by John Decoste and Twila Robar-Decoste it was a private school which operated between 1886 and 1894 and the children were brought over from the British Isles.   It was located at Dempsy Corner at the foot of the North Mountain and was called Hillfoot Farm.  The children range in age from 4 to 18 and are called inmates in the census 1891.  There were 30 at the time of the census on 17 Apr 1891.  There were 2 housekeepers, 1 laundress and 1 "teacher in private school".  In addition some of the older inmates are listed as "gen labor" and "chamber maid".  The great majority of them were born in Scotland.
