          [The Epidemic of 1860 hit this family hard.   The most popular entry in church registers is diphtheria, although how they knew is a mystery to me since this was a year before Louis Pasteur published his works.  Besides diphtheria was only the most popular but by no means the only diagnosis, they called it everything from heart palpitations to dropsy. - JD]
