[Some time during the World War I George was a US Marine and was injured in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic.  In 1906 the Dominican republic signed a 50 year treaty with the US. Internal disorders during the next decade finally ended in the establishment of a military government of US Marines who occupied the country 29 Nov 1916.  This is logically the time that George was there.
Although his father used the DUGGAN spelling, George always used DUGAN and claimed that it was the correct spelling.  If you trace back to his grandfather,  great grandfather and great-great grandfather you'll see that the spelling changed back and forth many times. - JD]
